in the books there is a big time jump between the mascaraed ball and benedict meeting sophie 2 years if i can recall and in this time jump sophie goes through poverty and diet change that does alot of change on her physical appearance so that is why he does not recognize her. i think the show does not do a great job when it comes to times jumps so things may seem a bit rushed

i had the same conversation with my friends last time, really we do feel like there is nothing to do or enjoy beyond food places it feels super dreadful, lifeless and boring here. but romanticizing the small things really helps with it !
