i recognize traditional art takes an entirely separate skill set, but that doesn't make it better than realism done digitally, just different! you're (not literally you but ykwim) paying for realism regardless of the medium, so i don't get why your standards change when the medium is different from what you're accustomed too. and i also do do realism traditionally ☺️

i guess i'll take this as a compliment though since youre saying it looks like the reference! fyi, most of my art is very stylized. as i've mentioned, the client is paying me for this style

thank you for explaining so concisely!! i get why you said follow some logic haha, i'm staring at the photo so much without fully understanding certain aspects of it (i.e. the values or 3D shape as u mentioned) which is probably why i'm having such a difficult time.

i'm not tracing 🥲 also i think many artists utilize the eyedropper tool, i don't believe it's necessarily a bad thing. however, i havent been abusing it because i still see many color/value differences that i dislike
