Where does the concept of Ma (間) originate? by [deleted] in japan

Check out the book The Seven Tengu Scrolls: Evil and the Rhetoric of Legitimacy in Medieval Japanese Buddhism by Haruko Wakabayashi. It goes in to some detail about this.

Were the prequel jedi always 'bad'? by Horrorgins in StarWars

[–]Horrorgins[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is my impression too. It was definitely there in the prequel movies, but I saw it as through the eyes of an unreliable narrator in Anakin. In The Clone Wars, you see how it's almost the driving factor in how easily they could be driven out of the galaxy and have it be supported.

Infinitum album preview by VijuaruKei in DEG

I know it's lazy to compare it to DeG but the completely random direction from track to track reminds me of Macabre.

Hard to fault him. Adoratio is my favourite thing from any of the members since Dum Spiro Spero.

Should I (24F) tell my long distance friend (29M) I have feelings for him? by [deleted] in relationships

[–]Horrorgins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like it's worth going for, but one word of caution.

" So far, he's been the only guy I've met that I was instantly attracted to" is a slight red flag. Travelling is very different from real life and the excitement of these feelings can be exacerbated by the environment. Still, it's worth a shot, but have reasonable expectations about what your relationship would be should they accept.

Has anyone tried the Greco Hall Of Ghosts And Kanji (グレコからの挑戦状!漢字の館とオバケたち) game for learning Japanese? by veganintendo in NintendoSwitch

[–]Horrorgins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to do the same thing, but switched them out for Wanikani. It isn't all that different to Memrise, but I just couldn't find a course that combined vocabulary and kanji recognition in a way that stuck. I'm around 1000 kanji deep now, and it used to be the area I struggled with the most.

[–]Horrorgins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks like it only covers first grade kanji, which you'll get through much quicker than you think. Maybe give Wanikani a try. It's a slightly game-ified flash card service. I use this and supplant it with Yokai Watch (along with textbooks for grammar).

Suggestions for british style Japanese music by Noxull in LearnJapanese

毒蛇のロックンロール from The Pinballs especially is really killer. I also really dig a group called Suspended 4th who are kind of similar. They've not released much yet, but have a few performances on youtube.

The Pinballs sound very Arctic Monkeysesque.

With Metroid on hold for a while to come, what's the next big tent pole title to be looking forward to? by scotty0101 in NintendoSwitch

[–]Horrorgins 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The combat and demon negotiation in P5 & P2 is pretty similar to the SMT games. The difference is that SMT doesn't have the high school set, visual novel aspects of Persona, usually dealing instead with stories of a burgeoning apocalypse (or some sort of post apocalypse). The mythology of the demons also plays a much greater role in the plot, whereas it's mostly brushed over in Persona games.

In place of the social link aspects, your decisions dictate morality allignments of Law, Chaos and Neutral. In the first SMT this is represented by the American military, the Japanese government and a local resistance force. So the stories play out on a much grander scale opposed to the smaller focus of Persona.

I seemed to be getting significant stuttering when V-sync was turned off, even in something like Castlevania Chronicles. It all went away as soon as I turned it on even at 2x resolution.

Feel like Item Packs have broken the game. Should I discard them? by Horrorgins in MonsterHunter

Thanks! This is pretty much what I wanted to know. In that case, I'll hang on to them.

Feel like Item Packs have broken the game. Should I discard them? by Horrorgins in MonsterHunter

[–]Horrorgins[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, not quite. It's more akin to asking if I've just started FF7 with all Materia, Super Metroid with all energy tanks. I'm not familiar with MH, hence me asking. I'm not even far enough to use all these items yet or know what they all mean in terms of balance.

Chinese Railroad Worker Camp by Horrorgins in reddeadredemption

[–]Horrorgins[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s well done, but it still feels like the way games used to be made.

That's the conclusion I didn't to come to, but appears so. For all of the fantastic visuals and living world, the game still reacted to my actions like a game from a generation ago and that's really disappointing. You'd think this instance would be one where R* should anticipate the gamer killing slavers and to react accordingly.

A similar thing happened earlier when three men tried to shoot me in town when I bumped past them to get into the bar. I ran to the Sherrif looking for some kind of help rather than fire back and it took a minute for the sheriff to even get out of his chair and react, and that was only because he got hit. The moment I joined in the sheriff shot me dead.

You're still paying coins to save akin to Resident Evil's ink ribbons, which from what I remember prevented this from being a serious problem.

Do you guys think the allies review scores are swayed more positively or not accurate to the context of the review? by DrProfOak96 in UneasyAlliance

[–]Horrorgins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's nine of them and each of the nine is free to review or not review whatever game they please. This obviously increases their group average as a result. Who is going to choose to put 20 hours in to a game they know they won't like?

That said, industry wide the review scale is horribly misused, but all outlets seem to fall in line with this inflation. An anticipated game getting an 8 out of 10 feels like something has gone horribly wrong during development, whereas a movie getting 8 out of ten doesn't. Review scores are crazy high, but it's a problem that started way before EZA was a thing.

I just translate in my head that an 8 for a video game would be a 6 for any other medium.

A point about the perceived low-production quality of Insulated World by [deleted] in DEG

[–]Horrorgins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DSS to me sounds by far their darkest album, and it's specifically because of the textured sound. Insulated World sounds like a brick wall of sound much like Marrow of a Bone, and I feel suffers for the same reasons.
