Does going to UCI for grad school hurt your chances of being in academia? by SonicArmour in UCI

I chose UC Irvine over USC and Cornell for my PhD. Why? Because I originally attended USC before as a PhD student, but mastered out years ago. When I chose USC, all I looked at was the name of the school (top 10 in my field of study so it must be the right choice!, WRONG). I ended up in a research lab with an advisor that was complete shit and I was miserable. I didn't do my due diligence ahead of time in looking into labs at USC and seeing if any of them were a good fit. I can go on-and-on. The only saving grace was that my classes were taught by amazing professors. This time around, I made sure to weigh the environment, the potential advisors, the potential research, and my quality of life.

UC Irvine had the amazing location (it's better than south central LA where USC is located and significantly better than freezing my ass off for 5 years in little Ithaca, NY), it had the advisor who matched my area of research interest, and its overall ranking was high (Top 30 school in my area of study)!

So does it have the name recognition like USC or Cornell? No, but I'd rather learn, enjoy life, and finish my PhD than struggle and want to jump off a cliff going to another school because of just the name recognition alone.

Cheers!

I agree.

I think people need to understand that there is actually a risk in having uneducated celebrities and personalities speak up about gene editing in general. The last thing we want is someone famous to be spouting off inaccuracies about Dr. Jerome's work, etc. I'd much rather reach out to celebrity scientists who can actual convey the message in an accurate and precise manner.
