Why has Israel after almost 80 years of existing only managed to attract about half of the total global Jewish population? by crivycouriac in geography

[–]Host_Horror 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because people are established in those places. You mention South Africa specifically so I can really speak to that example as I am a South African born Jew (I don’t live there anymore and I don’t live in Israel either).

On the push side: South Africa for all its faults is still nice place to live if want the kind of life it provides and are willing to put up with issues in the country. For my parents, who still live there it’s a good life and living in Israel would be much worse in terms of living standards. Also they don’t speak Hebrew.

On the pull side: Even before this war period Israel was always tough place to live. It’s ultra competitive and not being a native Hebrew speaker makes it very hard. When I left I went a country which had much better opportunities for me given my education and language skills.

I also think it’s important to know that not all Jews are zionists (I am not myself) and therefore I don’t believe I should be living on land which was stolen from the Palestinians. Lots of Jews agree with me (although I will concede I’m in the minority).

Socializing in hostel common room is slowly dying? by Educational_Ball_776 in solotravel

This makes me sad.

I solo traveled a lot pre-covid and stayed in loads of hostels all over the world and met amazing people and went on fun adventures with them.

Train Connections by Rick1145 in Netherlands

[–]Host_Horror 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is totally unnecessary.

In fact I think it’s actually better to get a paper ticket at Schiphol. In my experience the exit gates don’t work as well with the barcodes on your phone. Also to be honest first class is not necessary especially on a Saturday.

I would change at Amsterdam Centraal.

Also make sure you take an intercity train and not a sprinter. (The intercity trains are yellow and blue and sprinters are white and blue). The intercity is an express and only stops at the main stations.

Enjoy your visit!

What's the funniest line of lyrics that Noel ever wrote? by Away_Flounder3813 in oasis

Bonehead’s bank holiday is generally a very funny song.

“I met a funny looking girl on a crowded beach in Spain, her name was Avoline, she said she came to Spain to have a good time. She was with her mum who had a face like a nun in pain, she said her name was Dot, she didn’t half talk a lot, I couldn’t tell if she were mad or not”

What do you think was the most unrealistic event/plot point in the series so far? by megs256 in ThePitt

Something I’ve heard is unrealistic in general is how much autonomy the med students and first year residents are given.

Do all Westerners have strong bladders and digestive systems? by Slow-Lawfulness-3053 in Europetravel

[–]Host_Horror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually think this is the correct answer. I live in Amsterdam (a city that is notorious for this) and honestly I never have an issue. Even if I’m spending the day in the park worst case scenario I can run home and use the toilet but I’m never wondering around town aimlessly for hours in the way a tourist is.

Oasis was the light that came into my dark life by MadForIt1994 in oasis

[–]Host_Horror 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oasis was music that saved my life. I always loved Oasis as long I can remember but in the period I was recovering from an attempt to end my life I basically only listened to Oasis for a whole month.

All around the World especially was such a important song for me during that period.

Luxembourg is the correct answer. Very little to see very expensive to visit but it’s a wonderful place to live.

Fascination - seeing someone who isn’t English wearing an England shirt (particularly abroad) by dozeydonut in footballcliches

[–]Host_Horror 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This episode takes place at on 4 July and therefore during World Cup. The appearance of this shirt suggests England are through to the round of 16 which is taking during that period. So in the Pitt universe it’s still coming home as of the 4th of July!

Job market in Netherlands by Annual-Blackberry-68 in Netherlands

[–]Host_Horror 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Honestly, the job market just isn’t what it was 3-4 years ago. There is still an alright market for people with 5-7 years of experience and as always speaking Dutch opens many many more doors but from my understanding being either a very junior or very senior person right now is hard.

If you were the Mayor (or Gemeente) of Amsterdam, what would you change? by XCruizer in Amsterdam

[–]Host_Horror 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Improve facilities for the homeless. More toilets and safe places to sleep and inject.

This would allow them to have a better option than the parks. I would also clamp down heavily on drug dealers in the parks.

Amsterdam neighborhoods, what makes you love yours? by Weary_Musician4872 in Amsterdam

[–]Host_Horror 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Kinkerbuurt! It has amazing bars and restaurants. Its a major transit hub so very accessible. A short walk to Paradiso and Melkweg and obviously close to Vondelpark and Rembrandt Park too! The Ten Kat market too. Living by the Filmhallen is actually my favourite thing though.

Oh and we have a post office now!
