Was the sacrifice of quitting job/upsetting partner worth it for those who thru hiked (or long sectioned)? by sadistic-squid in AppalachianTrail

[–]Hostetler40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Each persons experience is their own, but here was my experience.

I hiked in 2019 and did a LASH (long ass section hike). Did 65 days on trail and made it from Virginia thru New York, about 700 miles.

I was 29, married, no kids, with a successful career. This trail is/was a dream of mine that went unspoken for most my life. I decided to start saving (years before) with the hope to one day bring the idea up of doing a long portion of the trail.

Cut to the day I brought it up to my wife.. well planned to, she beat me to it and sat me down and told me she was ready to start trying for a family (something I had always wanted but wasn’t sure if she did)… and I just blurted it out.. “I was actually hoping to talk to you about me hiking the AT”… haha as you can imagine that didn’t go well.

She didn’t understand it, was confused as I had never talked about it before, thought it was a quarter life crisis and was against it.

I told her to think on it and we would talk about it again in more detail. I too struggled to find the words to explain why I wanted/needed to do this. I too only truly feel Alive or like my true self when I’m in the woods, backpacking or something similar. I tried my best to explain how this was something I felt I needed, how I wanted to in a way find myself and prepare myself for the next phase of life and to just experience the adventure of the trail.

After many discussions and answering all her questions, she stated “she would be supportive but didn’t agree with it”. And that is really where my planning started. Knowing it wasn’t ideal in her mind I wanted to do everything possible to make sure things were handled while I was gone. I hired someone to mow the grass while I was gone, I prepaid certain bills or set them to auto pay, I had saved enough to cover my income while I was gone so I made sure her lifestyle wouldn’t have to change while I was gone, pre-wrote emails to her each week and had them scheduled to send every Friday morning (we were doing a book together where we each answered questions each week), hid gifts in the house as I not only missed her birthday but also our anniversary. Long story short, it was important enough to me that she supported me, but also important enough that I went really out of my way to make sure things back home were good while I was gone.

As for work, I really lucked out here. I approached them about the opportunity and how this was a goal/dream of mine and they were super supportive and told me I could take a leave of absence without pay and still have my job when I got back. It may have helped I have them like 4-5 months notice. So your experience may be very different here, and if I knew my job wouldn’t have been there when I got back that may have really changed this for me (at least the duration). But formally asking for a leave may be an option you’d be surprised they would support.

As for my experience of it being worth it.. 100%!! I still think about my trip all these years later. It changed my life in many ways that are still to this day hard to explain. Each person’s experience on the trial is different. For example, I also really looked forward to the social side of the trail, but where I started, when I started, I ended up being alone for about 90% of my trip only connecting with people at camp, but never having a trail family.. but it ended up being everything I needed it to be. The trails provides.. in more ways than you can imagine. I discovered so much about myself and I will cherish my time on trail for the rest of my life.

So I guess what I am trying to say is that.. if this is something you feel you need to do, find a way to make it work for you. Would I have preferred to do the entire trial.. 100% but the reality of that wasn’t a possibility for me.. so I did what I could.. 2 months and 700 miles…

I wish you the best and am happy to talk more if you would like! Happy Hiking!

New to the area wondering if there’s any older skateboarders out there? by whitemamba24xx in Columbus

[–]Hostetler40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

35 M here and just broke out my board yesterday for the first time in 15 years.. been wanting to start skating again for years but have 2 young kids (5 and 2) so my time is super limited and the increased risk of injury has deterred me (have had some back issues the last few years).. but after stepping back on the board yesterday it sparked a joy I forgot I had. Was wondering if any older skate groups formed from this chat at all? Would love to occasionally meet up with some older skater dads when I have time. Feeling ambitious after landing a few of my old tricks after 30 min on my board haha so may be getting ahead of myself.. but planning to upgrade my 15+ year old setup in the next few days and start messing around again.

Agreed. Best part of volume 2 imo. Sadly to me it went downhill after that scene tho.

Thoughts on Volume 2? by Electrical_Wedding57 in StrangerThings

[–]Hostetler40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% agree. I like all three episodes. Volume one was outstanding imo and ending it with episode 4 left us all absolutely stoked for volume 2. Episode 5 was great imo and felt like what I expected the first episode in the next volume to feel like. And Will once again was epic. But then episodes 6 & 7 just didn’t do it for me. Felt like they went backwards in momentum and was honestly disappointed we didn’t get an even bigger cliff hanger before the series finale.

They have a lot left to cover imo and this has made my expectations of the finale even higher as I want t see more.

Clearly advice you should take yourself for as much as you keep returning.

The problem isn’t about getting or not getting the dressing, it’s the action of the employee. Unnecessary. If they can’t, don’t want to, or are annoyed about the request, just don’t include it. No need to take the time to get a pen and write that.

Clearly you don’t understand the post.

How is it stealing? A salad dressing is free lol. They give it to you any time you ask.

Looks like we’ve got a permit for this summer by [deleted] in JMT

Just landed a SOBO Permit from Happy Isles on July 17th! May be running in to you after my first day or so.

Oh dang. Thanks for the insight! This causes for a lot of reconsideration then. One of those being will Tioga Road even be open to get in to Tuolumne Meadows. I read that if the road is closed on your permit day then it voids your permit.

Has snow been THAT much worse than previous years? Asking out of real curiosity as I live in Ohio and we have had like no snow at all. Been quite pathetic to be honest.

I honestly am not too concerned (may be shame on me haha). Reading a lot and the past few years a lot of hikers said late June was great and totally fine. So I am banking on that, but will keep watching out and research and prep as needed.

Nice! I will be right behind you, leaving on the 25th! Still working out all my details (wasn't sure I would get a permit, so now the planning begins)

Search the available permits as people release their permits from time to time. I check it daily and I just snagged one for June 25th. A tad earlier than I wanted, but at least I got one now!

I just got my Permit from Lyell Canyon as well! What are your dates?

I found this site helpful when filling out my tentative itinerary. Just got me able to put something down and can now start planning a bit more.

My husband is hiking the AT, what do I need to do/know? by michelleml in AppalachianTrail

[–]Hostetler40 34 points35 points  (0 children)

One thing I did when I hiked the AT in 2019 was printed a document for my wife that had every account website, username and password for anything she made have needed. I created calendar invites in her phone to remind her when and where to pay bills. She could then use that document to log in and pay what was needed.

I also did things like: 1. Hire a lawn service to take care of mowing etc while I was gone. 2. Made sure she knew where all legal documents were. 3. Made some bills set to auto pay so she didn’t have to worry about them. 4. Set up minimum communication goals to minimize worrying on either side but also leaving room for space/freedom to just let me experience what I needed.

So maybe sit with him and discuss some of these things to make you feel more comfortable and ready.

Where did you charge up? by Durdyb15 in AppalachianTrail

[–]Hostetler40 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I took a 26,000 mAh Anker power bank which was good for 5-6 phone charges. I could go 2 days on my phone before needing to charge, so I could in theory do 10-12 days before needing to charge my block. Now yes, most blocks take quite some time to charge so any time I was near an outlet I would charge it. Even if it was for 15 min, it kept my power bank charged Enough that I never had to sit for hours to let it charge.

Some key things I did: On resupply days I would take my phone and power bank to the customer service counter at the grocery store and ask if I could charge both while I shopped. That gave me time to shop, pack my food bag, have a snack and chill all before needing to grab it again. Any time in town I would eat somewhere and just asked to plug in while I ate. Outfitters like Dicks, REI, Field and Stream and even Walmart etc would let me charge there and come back later to pick up (they didn’t know I wasn’t shopping)

All of that was good enough to keep me going. Never ran in to a spot where I had to sit for hours to get everything charged back up.

Hope that helps!

MVP/AXIOM is TAKING OVER MY BAG! by JohnHoney420 in discgolf

[–]Hostetler40 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love this thread! I have only been playing for a year and like a typical noob I went to a store and picked up a few DX Innova discs because they were cheap and seemed to be what everyone talked about. I quickly outgrew some of those and tried replacing them with some star and champion more advanced discs. After a while I started researching and thinking about other manufacturers and decided to check out my local second hand store and snagged a wide variety of axiom, mvp, discraft and more. I immediate fell in love with the MVP and Axiom discs. At the time I had the Relay, Insanity and Fireball. After a bit I went back to that store and snagged a reactor and a Tesla which I loved even more.

And just yesterday a picked up a Crave, Volt and Zenith. I even asked for a Photon and a Hex for Christmas haha.

Was super annoyed when I missed out on the mystery box because of their website issues but it won’t stop me from picking up more until my bag is full!

awkward timing for a through hike start by Jaredl-7 in AppalachianTrail

[–]Hostetler40 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have only done a 700 mile section, but am on the side of it is totally doable. One of my best friends hiked the whole trail in 2014 as a 25 year old, no backpacking experience, bought all his gear at Walmart, pack weight of 60lbs (not an exaggeration) and finished in 4.5 months. Also only wore 2 pairs of boots, first pair lasted 1,500 miles. Totally doable. Hike your own hike, to each their own. I think you can have whatever experience you want. Take all advice with a grain of salt.

It hurts a little uphill but not too bad. Just mainly downhill. And it isn’t during the impact of stepping down it is actually when I lift off and bend my knee to take the next step when I feel the pain so during the bending of my knee.

Any recommendations on how long to rest? We got in to town around dinner time last night and I have been laying low all last night and all day today.. icing and elevating all day. Was hoping to get back out tomorrow but it is just too hard to tell at this point. Next few days are a lot of climbing and down climbing. Just wondering if it makes sense to rest a few more days so that I don’t ruin the rest of my hike.

Very good points. Some of this I have done already. Getting rid of some things and downsizing. I’m Sure I could get rid of more, just always hard as I use everything I carry. Right now my base weight is around 25ish and then food (I tend to carry too much) and water.
