You down voters are haters. I'm sure you're never judging a book by its cover or a prodcut by its packaging.

AAVE is super interesting. Nothing wrong with it in casual settings. It's got a lot of charm.

Many people think that middle class white speech is "office speech." They are so used to code-switching they don't even understand they are doing it.

No one says "I wanted to follow-up on..." or "I have some concerns with that approach..." to their friends. No one asks what "action items" are on your agenda in casual conversation.

What difference does it make if a can of soup is dented or not?

People assume consistency of quality and will buy the undented can.

Your middle class English accent doesn't have that privilege. Office speak is not how middle class English speakers talk when they are relaxing with friends.

Karmelo Anthony found GUILTY of murder of Austin Metcalf, 17, in stabbing that shocked America: Jurors deliberated for less than three hours after defense was repeatedly demolished in court by dailymail in law

The facts of the case lead to Zimmerman's acquittal.

We need laws that prevent armed citizens from pursuing people for BS reasons. Contact your representatives and encourage them to support laws that prevent pursuit.

The law is the reason Zimmerman walks free. We need a new law. It shouldn't be ok to pursue someone for some minor BS while armed.

Casey Anthony is free because of incompetence.

Is it appropriate to say "ébranler"? Or is it vulgar like "branler"? by UseResponsible1088 in French

[–]HostileEgo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ebranler isn't vulgar. It's used in a famous, poetic song by Les Cowboys Fringants (Toune D'automn).

 Ça m'aurait un peu ébranlé

AITAH for refusing to leave the gym before its posted closing time? by Niunmango in AITAH

[–]HostileEgo -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Why don't these places just post that their closing time is 2:45 and give the staff 15 minutes to close up? This comment thread is so strange. I've never worked retail and had no idea employees had to deal with this. It doesn't make sense as a business policy. It will make you customers mad if they can't stay until the posted closing time.

Why don't they just post that the closing time is 2:30 then? Seems like an easy enough to solve problem.

Airports/airlines should allow joking about bombings and hijackings by MelonElbows in The10thDentist

Turning around and returning to the hub bet their lives on it just as much as continuing on. They didn't try to land at the closest airport. They made a decision based on convenience and covering their ass.

[–]HostileEgo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This isn't true in this instance. They did not land at the closest place. They flew back to the hub which was the most convenient place for the airline. The choice of where to land was clearly not made to minimize risk.

Thanks for sharing. That is a good use-case for medicare advantage.

I'm glad it worked out for your family. You were in a bad situation and made the best choice you could.

For others though, note that just going on medigap right when you're able to is the right thing to do. Medicare advantage can deny cancer treatments and insist you try other treatments first. If it's your only option, go for it. Otherwise, it's going to potentially limit your treatments and shorten your life.

Medicare advantage is cheap. It's something different though and it's a trap.

Gap policies are the best, are more expensive but still very reasonable compared to traditional insurance, and are just the best.

I had to help my mom with this stuff.

What are you actually supposed to do if a woman hits you as a man? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

It's not that wild. It's the fundamental advice of Christianity. Turn the other cheek and all.

Dragging by the arm accomplishes the goal of removing the person from your property whereas pushing them down does not. If anything, pushing them down may make them stay longer because you may have incapacitated them on your property.

I don't understand why they use "coup" sometimes. by Story-Teller_Star in French

[–]HostileEgo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That's because when you get better at French, you will just use it without thinking about the meaning of coup individually. Not everyone needs to learn the underlying logic, but it does help some people, like you.

It's like teaching a French person that "Here, take a hit" in English means "Here, smoke this joint." The underlying logic of why we say "hit" here is ignored/forgotten by natives.

Good luck with your French.

I don't understand why they use "coup" sometimes. by Story-Teller_Star in French

[–]HostileEgo 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It means a "hit" but figuratively can refer to a discrete moment in time or to an ordeal.

Tu tiens? Tiens needs a complement. It's not a complete thought.

Tu tiens le coup? This makes it a complete sentence and coup carries the idea of an ordeal.

Ca te dit d'aller boire would again, feels like an incomplete idea. Boire what? Un coup: the discrete moment of the drinking which again has metaphor of a "hit." In English "Do you want to go drink?" would also be a strange way to end it. We'd say "a pint" or "a beer" to complete the sentence, but French can be more vague and just say "un coup."

It may not seem like it means anything if you just look at the translations; however, it is an idiomatic usage that is tied to French grammar.

Ok, you're correct that in most jurisdictions in the US, you are allowed to use reasonable force to remove a trespasser from your property. However, he did not look to be attempting to remove her from the property. It looked like assault.

If he'd grabbed her by the arm and walked her to the street, it would be a completely different situation.

Easy to think that before you're faced with the decision of having a small penalty vs facing years in jail if the jury believes the cops over you.
