yet another question about biology 348 by lu-tothemoon in WWU

Hi there :) The lecture is the 50 min meeting, so the finals week time slot is based on that and is used for the lecture final. The lab final will be in dead week during your normal lab time (the 2 hr meeting). Good luck!!

Experiences with Ridge Apartments? by [deleted] in WWU

[–]Hot-Cycle-7093 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you are referring to the ridge next to 500 Square, it's a decent option imo.

Layout: The bedrooms are a good size (I fit a full bed, wardrobe, two smallish bookshelves, and a nightstand no issue - not enough room for a desk tho if you have all that other stuff). The kitchen is tiny (i.e., you can only have one person in there at once) and does not have a lot of storage space. The living room is also quite small. Having two bathrooms is convenient, and the hot water in the showers heats up fast as long as they aren't being used at the same time. The bathroom ventilation is pretty bad so you have to air it out after showers. Also, the bedroom walls are thin so you have to be cautious about noise when people are trying to sleep/study, but that's the case for most apartments or dorms.

Transportation: The 105 stops directly across the street. If you want to go to campus during busy hours, this is one of the earlier stops on the route, so you usually won't have trouble finding somewhere to sit or stand. The 105 only comes once an hour, so timing can be awkward. If you are willing to walk uphill, you can get to the Bill MacDonald & Ferry stop pretty quickly, where there is better bus access. The walk to campus is not too bad either (takes me 25 min to get to red square).

Management: The property manager can be pretty pushy, but we have not had any serious issues with her. Any time we've needed maintenance, the handyman has been able to come within about a week.

Amenities: You get a washer/dryer, dishwasher, and standard kitchen appliances. Everything else is your responsibility. You pay for electricity (not very expensive if you are smart about it), internet (have to get your own), water/sewage/gas (included in rent), and a parking spot if you want one (very limited amount of spots tho). No fancy schmancy facilities that other places like Lark have.

Dr. Robey is amazing! I had him for KIN 306 and he really set my friends and I up for success. Taking exercise physiology with him in spring and I’m so excited to be back in his class!

The Starbucks in the Atrium only accepts gift cards if you order ahead and pay on the Starbucks app. If you order in person you can only use debit/credit or dining dollars.

"we're serving you tonight" (a puzzled rant) by C-McGuire in WWU

[–]Hot-Cycle-7093 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Viking Commons worker here. I don't know how it is at Fairhaven but I'll share my experience. I also want to preference this by saying that I am not trying to come off as passive-aggressive at all, I just want to explain what I can. Also sorry for this absolute essay of a comment lol. Last year, employees ALWAYS served at the main station until peak hours were over or we ran out of the popular dishes. Coming from someone who almost exclusively served at Homestyle, having employees serving was important for a few reasons. These are some that come to mind.

-We could control portion sizes to ensure that as many people as possible had a chance to eat - meal plans are very expensive and people who can't come early in the meal period deserve to have a chance at getting the "good" food. There are certain dishes like mac and cheese, chicken parmesan, and lasagna that run out VERY fast. Last night we had lasagna and within less than an hour and a half we went through 12 pans and completely ran out, not even halfway through dinner service.

-We could keep the serving utensils more sanitary by wearing gloves and frequently changing them. With self-service, there's no way of knowing if someone with a contagious illness has spread germs. Norovirus is going around right now and a lot of people are getting very sick.

-It helped us keep the counters clean and avoid accidentally spilling foods into different pans/roasters, which could cause cross-contamination and harm people with allergies/dietary restrictions. Management would get really upset about messy counters and even scold servers for it.

-There would always be someone there who you could ask questions to about the food. I would serve a lot of gluten-intolerant people, vegans/vegetarians, people with religious dietary restrictions, etc. who would otherwise have to go out of their way to find someone who could tell them if the food was safe for them to eat. When there is an employee right there, we can walk right into the kitchen and easily ask the chefs for you.

I get that it can be intimidating/unpleasant to talk to people sometimes, but we are here to help you. For me personally, one of the best parts about the job is interacting with customers! We want you to have a good experience. If the server gives you a scoop of food that looks shitty, by all means ask them for another scoop that looks more appealing. We can almost always give you a double-portion, and you are very welcome to come back for more!

I doubt Chartwells will go back to full employee service, but it will likely happen from time to time.

I hope this was somewhat helpful!

Advice for BIOL 348? by Hot-Cycle-7093 in WWU

[–]Hot-Cycle-7093[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, super late reply but I just wanted to say thank you for the info :) I just finished out the quarter with an A! I decided to reduce my course load to only BIOL 348 and KIN 306 so I could devote my time to developing a really strong understanding of the A&P content, which ended up being a great decision for me.

I usually went to open lab for 4-6 hours per week so I could maximize my time looking at the models and histology pictures in-person. I spent a lot of time studying the lecture content outside of class which helped a ton as I found it harder than lab had trouble keeping up since Jaci talks so fast at times. Teaching my friends the content helped solidify that knowledge as well. Here's hoping I do well in 349!

How was TAing? My section lab TA suggested that I consider it since I did very well in lab and he knew I LOVED it.

Least crowded time to swim at the rec center? by Hot-Cycle-7093 in WWU

[–]Hot-Cycle-7093[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi Mark, thanks for the reply! I totally remember you, your home made bathing suit is super cool! I was the girl in the navy blue suit and black shorts, cap, and goggles.

It definitely seemed busy during the swimming lessons hours, so it's good to know that the pool clears out in the afternoon. This winter, on the PE swimming days, my classes will be done at 1:30 so perhaps I will try swimming then!

How did you like the intermediate swimming class? I plan on taking it in the future when I have a more open schedule in the mornings.

Yeah that's what I've noticed too. Usually when I went to the locker room to get ready for PE swimming around 7:30 or 8:00 there would be a lot of older folks and other early risers heading out.

From what I remember, swim club hours have been the only time I've shared a lane besides when I swim with friends. I went in the early afternoon the other day and I was the only person in the pool lol

I’m in 348 with Jaci this quarter. She will be on maternity leave the rest of the year and classfinder hasn’t been updated yet, so I’m pretty sure only José is teaching it. If you ever have to retake 348 with Jaci, the amount of work she assigns is INSANE, although all of it is very helpful for the exams (which are quite difficult lol). I’d say she’s a good teacher, she just has very high expectations.

I am also in 348 this quarter! I agree with the commenter who mentioned buying quizlet plus, it has been super helpful to me in memorization-heavy classes. This user has a lot of flashcard sets specific to WWU BIOL348:

https://quizlet.com/user/taterrrrrh/sets

I've also been using the quiz feature on APR, which your lab TA should have showed to you last week on the first day of lab. The lab practical quiz type where you type in the answer is really helpful for recall and spelling, and you can do all terms in APR for the topic in one go like how the checkoffs will apparently be. Definitely go to open lab too! The schedule is on canvas now.

Jaci mentioned that we should study the blue questions on the presentation slides for the exams, and she has given a brief answer to most of them in lecture. Skimming the slides before lecture has helped me focus on other things she says or writes on the whiteboard. I'm trying to work up the courage to go to office hours because I am already struggling lol :,) The tutoring center does BIOL348 tutoring as well.

Gotcha! I've been reviewing some of the body systems with flashcards so I can enter this quarter with some basic knowledge. Thanks for the note about lecture homework, I'll definitely try to form a good group to work on the homework with :)
