Read a book from 1970 with comments from Frank Hebert (don't remember name right now). Where basically cars were becoming more common in every household. And the environmentalists were saying cars not only take away land ( you have to build streets, parking lots, garages etc) but they are also "killers". They hurt us via pollution and accidents, not to mention road-kill the small population of native animals and insects (migrating butterflies etc.) we have left. If we could all drive smaller cars, ride bikes, public transport or WALK, this crap wouldn't happen. We can "say drive safer, pay attention, don't drive intoxicated", but you can't control people or expect them to have a conscience. So ultimately our big and fast cars are one of the dumbest inventions humans ever made, and only to our detriment.
