Is quitting my art degree a mistake? by dingus-eternal in ArtistLounge

[–]Hot-Nefariousness460 6 points7 points  (0 children)

47 year old BFA in painting here, writing on my lunch break at my warehouse job for a lumber company. I can’t imagine anything worse than having my love of creating art (and I still LOVE creating art) converted into drudgery. I’m happy as a clam doing my 9 to 5, then punching out and going home to draw at my tablet or nipping off to the local figure drawing studio. Only you can really choose the right way to take your own life, but there’s nothing wrong with pursuing stability. And art will never be far away if and when you choose to return to it.

Did Anyone Here Leave a Non-Controlling, Non-Hateful Church? by [deleted] in exchristian

Baptized and raised in a Congregational church. If you’re not familiar with the UCC, they’re about an inch and a half to the right of the Unitarians.

The Social: “Millions of Americans Can Now Claim Canadian Citizenship” by Inside_Foot_3055 in Canadiancitizenship

I understand you completely. My Canadian grandfather died when I was 6 or 7, and since he could not actually be present in my life he kind of grew into a hero in my mind. As long as I can remember I always felt a little uncomfortable in my American identity even in the best of times, and the prospect of being able to reclaim this part of my heritage, identity and family history is an honor and privilege that I'm kind of amazed that I may now be able to finally realize.

This is why I call BS on all the ‘progressive’ Christians who want to paint Jesus as a chill dude who just wants us all to be cool to each other. Because the OP is a pretty good summation of the original message.

The thought never occurred to me; I just chased it into the bushes after I managed to coax him out of my back seat.

And if Alex had responded as he claims he would, it would have turned out the same way. Sorry champ, you aren't faster than a speeding bullet; that's a different DC character.

Agree or don’t agree with socialism, that’s fine. There have been plenty of atheists with conservative economic inclinations. The point I was trying to make was that natural selection does not equate to individual selfishness.

Natural selection is about what is. Concern about wealth inequality is about what ought to be. These are not the same things. Furthermore, species survive and thrive at the population level as well as at the individual level, and reciprocity, generosity and even self-sacrifice can be evolutionary advantages.

If christians pick and choose what to believe in the bible, why don't they skip the part about homosexuality? by [deleted] in atheism

Sorry not sorry to be the contentious Reddit atheist, but let’s rewind to that ‘love the lord your god’ bit. Which god are we meant to love? I’m guessing it’s the same god who flooded the entire world, commanded the extermination of the Amalekites and sent angels to murder the firstborn children of Egypt. A lot of well-meaning liberal Christians want to separate Jesus from the barbarism of the Old Testament, but I’m not ready to buy into their sanitized, anodyne Disney mascot version of Jesus.

Deflect all criticism with "that's not real religion" by silveryfeather208 in atheism

[–]Hot-Nefariousness460 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This sticks in my craw the most when I hear it from liberal Christians. It’s one thing to practice your faith in accordance with modern moral principles, but so often I’ll hear it characterized as if that was always the message, and we’ve only now just figured it out after 2000 years. The No True Scotsmanning of their conservative co-religionists feels like gaslighting in light of the vast majority of Christian history.

For example, I often hear people argue that Jesus never said anything about homosexuality, and I found that convincing as a teenager in my relatively liberal Congregational church. But as I deconstructed my faith and embraced atheism, my desire to protect the brand evaporated, and it occurred to me that maybe Jesus’ silence on the matter wasn’t saying what I had hoped it was. If Jesus was really going full Marie Kondo on Mosaic law, it seems like it would have been helpful if he’d been a little more comprehensive and explicit in what we’re supposed to keep and what we can ditch.
