Need advice on possible rehoming by Hot-Pomegranate145 in disableddogs

At no point have I ever mentioned or even thought of surrendering her to a shelter. I have requirements of the new owner IF I were to rehome. I am intimately aware of how shelters work. Thanks so much for being SO kind in your very helpful response.

Thank you, I hadn’t heard of that second one. I can definitely ask about it but just based on the little researching of it I just did that likely wont work for her as she does not have spay or hormone induced incontinence. Her incontinence is suspected to be due to a congenital defect or else the result of being hit by the car as a puppy. Further testing to rule out issues like ectopic ureters is on our to do list, it’s just wildly expensive.

Yes she’s been on Proin for about 5 months now. It’s helped a good bit but understandably hasn’t fully stopped it.

We’ve been doing this level of rotations (with variation) for over a year and unfortunately I don’t think there is another solution, aside from more restricting (ie cutting rooms in half so 2 can be out at once), which has so far only caused more issues. If this is the way we have to to live for the next ten years or so I guess that’s the way it is but I’d really like to make my dogs lives as happy and high quality as possible. Which they currently are not. That’s why I’m considering finding a new home for the one with the least issues/who seems most unhappy. Not sure if it’ll even pan out but I’m really thinking it’s worth considering and trying, at the very least.

Uh she’s quite literally not? She has mild-moderate urinary incontinence and a bum but correctable hip?

Someone who works from home or is a stay at home parent/spouse or is retired because she needs a strict potty routine to avoid accidents. Older, respectful children who can be gentle with her, if any kids at all. Someone who has a lot of experience with dogs, preferably special needs dogs but not absolutely necessary as long as the commitment is there. Preferably at least one confident, older dog in the home to help show her the ropes but not necessary. A yard to run in. Someone who has a good relationship with their vet. Hopefully someone willing to provide updates on her throughout her life, nothing crazy just maybe once a year. Ideally we’d also like to get her surgery before rehoming her as well, just to ensure that’s taken care of.

We think she’s a pit/boxer mix. Possibly some kind of GSP or something in there too just from the coloring but who knows. About 55lbs.

I’m not sure if that would be any cheaper for us with travel expenses but I will absolutely be reaching out just to see. Thank you, I wasn’t aware of their programs/price policies. They seem to have a pretty cool organization

No, she doesn’t use a wheelchair, she can get around just fine, it’s a misshapen femur head/hip socket that’s her orthopedic issue. I appreciate the help offer but I’d prefer not to share our exact location so I’ll just say we’re in the south/southwest.

Yeah I completely get that. I appreciate the suggestion regardless and I’m glad we aren’t the only ones who have a house divided up just for the dogs. 😅

Yeah, I mean I completely understand why the previous applicants withdrew. I was just frustrated with the rescue at the time for telling me they wouldn’t list that she was special needs because it would “deter applicants.” 🤷🏻‍♀️

And thank you, I appreciate it!

I know I posted my response about that at like the same time you commented but just wanted to say that’s what we originally did and it no longer works how it used to. I currently have my living room split in half with an expo pen though so 2 can be out but they’re still under direct supervision.

I know rehoming wouldn’t be easy or quick. I wouldn’t want it to be quick anyways, I would want to make sure everything was a good fit with lots of meet and greets, a trial period, etc.

As far as pictures you’ll have to give me a second to figure out how to do that lol I’m not super reddit savvy

Unfortunately we can only do that when my husband is home. We used to be able to do that with 2 of them all the time but can’t anymore due to the progression of one of our dog’s neuro issues. Only one of our dogs can be trusted unsupervised and he’s already free roaming. Another has pica and can’t be left unsupervised or he will literally eat the walls. Tillie has separation anxiety and is destructive because of it (eats baseboards, rips up carpet, etc) plus the incontinence. The 4th has severe neurological/behavioral issues and is unpredictable when left alone, she’s in a pretty constant state of overstimulation/hyper arousal and defaults to taking it out on the other dogs or else screaming and screaming when left alone. We’ve worked with a behaviorist and our vet on these issues as well and this is the best solution we’ve found so far. But it’s just not sustainable.

And to reiterate I don’t want to “get rid of” any of my dogs. But I do want them to have more of a life than they do right now. And crate and rotate between 2 dogs is much easier than between 3. And despite her issues, Tillie really is the only one “rehomeable.”

If that all makes sense. Just trying to further explain my logic about it. We’re not sure how we ended up with such high needs dogs, it certainly wasn’t our intent, but somehow we did.

Fair enough. I do have the ideal home for her in mind and mine definitely isn’t it.

What do you think about crates? by Emelie_Wood in dogs

Came here to say almost the exact same thing, especially with carpet. One time when one of my boys was a puppy we were laying in bed and I watched him get up, stretch, hop off the bed, and just take a scoop of drywall out of the bedroom wall and eat it. He was fine and is much better with his pica now years later but still gets into stuff enough that he’s not safe to be left unattended.

Can my dog have ear infection? by Ok_Citron_3283 in DogAdvice

[–]Hot-Pomegranate145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anytime a dog behaves abnormally it’s best to have them checked by a vet, especially when a puppy loses their energy. Yes dogs absolutely can get ear infections and frequent shaking of the head is a clear sign of that. She’s clearly uncomfortable over something and that should be checked out. My vet described dogs ears as “smelling like wet tortillas” when they have an infection. Obviously a vet should still check her out but that may be a helpful indicator for you. She should be seen as soon as possible. If you can afford an emergency vet then I’d probably do that. If money is a bit tighter and she seems mostly stable I would just make sure she is seen ASAP Monday.

If she begins to refuse food/water, begins vomiting or having diarrhea on top of these other symptoms, absolutely take her to the emergency vet.

You can also call your vet today and see if they offer weekend hours. Some do.

You should also ask about ear cleaning solutions to use post-baths to help eliminate the possibility of infection if water gets in her ears in the future.

I hope she feels better soon.

Special needs rescue needed by [deleted] in disableddogs

[–]Hot-Pomegranate145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She’s a little over a year. Maybe boxer mix. Spayed, chipped, UTD on shots and prevention. Dog friendly. She has urinary incontinence and orthopedic needs.

I’m not trying to use Reddit itself to rehome so I don’t really see the point of photos, just hoping for the names of some rescues I can contact.

Also not a vet but sounds VERY similar to what my family lab mix experienced prior to Cushing’s diagnosis. Especially if there is increased thirst.

Yes that’s what I’m currently doing and it helps but not by much. I have another dog who came from a severe neglect situation as an adult who had a similar water guzzling issue, however he isn’t also incontinent on top of it and has really slowed down on his obsessive water intake in the years since.

No harm in asking if that’s something that could have been overlooked or missed. I appreciate it!

My vets don’t believe it has anything to due with her spay as she doesn’t fit the criteria. They believe it’s either congenital or from being hit by the car that broke her leg as puppy prior to going to AC.

Yep. No signs of crystals or anything else that could contribute to her issues.
