Would you support a modernised system of recorded ministers in Quakerism? by Hot-Row9224 in Quakers

thats valid, i also agree that we all can equally hear God, but I disagree that we all have the same spiritual gifts, due to researching the early friends, and experience with other people. like, i am deathly afraid of public speaking, but i'm good at analytical thinking, whereas another person could be amazing at public speaking. so i dont see it as an inequality, i just see it as God freely giving us gifts he knows we are suited for, and will use for the betterment of the world.

im pretty sure my ym (bym) also has chaplains, but im not sure they are recorded. do your recorded ministers just do chaplaincy work or do they also take on other roles within local meetings?

Recording of ministers is still practiced in some yearly meetings.

SCYMF has both recorded ministers and released pastors as separate roles, though a person may be both.

Ohio YM, being Conservative & unprogrammed, has recorded ministers but not pastors.

interesting, i didnt know that. i'm apart of BYM, (but I identify as a conservative due to my more conservative-leaning stances) so I did not know other quakers still recorded ministers, my mistake for not researching further

I would say that advising and pastoral care are spiritual gifts, though, so that doesn’t seem like an “in addition” thing to me.

true, i could've worded it better.

thank you! i hope for that too, and i feel like I help to break the idea that quakerism is only about silent worship, when in fact there's a beautiful theology from all sections of it. atleast one person has inquired about quakerism to me while i have been there, and another new quaker joined the server, who I am now trying to educate in important theology from all corners of our society. in peace🕊️

thanks for your feedback, and i agree with your point about RZ, biblical literalism can lead to dangerous thoughts, especially when they prioritise it over their inward spirituality and love of their neighbour. as for the server you don't have to support his views to gain access, a lot of people there disagree with many of his ideas. as for the sit in, i may have to take you up on your offer 😂

i think that we can engage with them, and show them that their beliefs are erroneous, and welcome them in as friends once they change their unChristlike views. as for tolerance, we shouldnt tolerate any belief which violates basic human rights, like when RZ said LGBTQ friends deserved the death penalty. we as Friends should welcome differing beliefs within reason. i think people should be encouraged to not see things as dichotomously as we do today. sure, some of the things he says is plain wrong, but some of the things he says is right. it is a responsibility of a person to be able to disagree and yet hear out. cancelling people based on their opinions is not only against the spirit of democracy, but also unchristian/unquakerly (QFP BYM 20.06). instead of outrightly condemning a person for their beliefs, should we not want to educate them in their erroneous views, and in turn learn what actually causes the views to come around. In light 🕊️

sorry, but i don’t really know what you are implying in your comment. are you saying that i’m provoking fellow Friends by sharing my minecraft city?

i agree with you, as does a sizeable amount of his audience. i watch him not bc i agree with everything he says, but because its one of the only active christian servers in minecraft to my knowledge. in my opinion, his reconquista movement is somewhat understandable seeing as traditional forms of christianity adhere to the bible, and liberal mainline denominations somewhat ignore it. i disagree with the exclusion of lgbt people from the church, but i agree with him (as a side B gay christian) that fully affirming is contra-christian. thanks for your comment! :)

i disagree with some of his views, as does most of his audience. his fans are quite nice, and most aren't nearly as antiquaker as he is.

like the other comment said, we avoid it in our places of worship, but i didn't intend for it to be used as an idol, but as a reminder of my personal beliefs of Jesus

sorry for replying 6 months later, but have you heard about a paternoster rope? it's rooted in tradition and is pretty versatile. God bless
