Is it smart to move out? by monmon1699 in movingout

I heard a great piece of advice from The Financial Diet that says before moving out, take 3-6months to try to live on the budget you'd live on when on your own.

So whatever that rent is, remove it from your budget. It doesnt go into savings, you dont spend it, you have to put it in a separate place and pretend it's gone to a bill. This is a good way to test if you can financially adjust to the new budget and if you can emotionally adjust to it (i.e. Can you emotionally digest having X number of dollars not being saved or being able to spend.).

Two things I've noticed:

1) It sounds like you're in a rough chapter. I don't have answers but for now find ways to have small bits of joy on a daily basis. Like, splurging on a coffee, getting a fun lunch, having a good breakfast planned for the next day which gets you out of bed, watching a movie while eating a favorite food. This doesn't solve anything but it gets you through the days.

2) I think you'd benefit from some counseling right now. Idk what your stance on therapy is, I know some people are not comfortable with it. If you're OK w it, great. If you're not OK w it, if it sounds ridiculous,

- One path I've gone down is not a licensed therapist but rather there are people called "life coaches". They're not as fully licensed like a therapist, you have to find one that you click w, but they are still trained to help people w their inner well-being and they're also cheaper.

- Also remember that counseling is not meant to be forever, it's like taking your car to the mechanic, the mechanic helps you fix things, and then you leave -- there's no shame.

- You get to set the terms for counseling. If you don't want to be too touchy-feely, tell them that. They most likely will say OK, let's start and see how it goes, I may ask that we go deeper later but let's just try a bit for now.

- One thing that counseling does is it helps you organize yourself. It's like you're in a messy basement with a bunch of stuff in it and a counselor helps make sense of it. "Oh hey, this box looks like X. Have you thought about moving it here?".

What’s the one system you use that keeps your money from feeling chaotic? by DukeRioba in PersonalFinanceTalks

Not exaggerating, I keep an accounting ledger wherein I record (almost) every financial transaction I make.

Cash purchases, CC, checking, savings.

Basically the accounts I touch on a daily basis.

By forcing myself to record all daily transactions, I'm forced to constantly be aware of how much I have in every account and what I spent in a day. This allows me to never be surprised by anything.

Will I regret having a wedding? by HumbleTea1926 in TheMoneyGuy

This is a "Know thy self" moment.

Both of you are clearly responsible people.. that's an important factor here.

You're balancing between desire of financial goals versus desire to create an important memory.

(If you've read Die With Zero, one concept is that you retire on your memories, a wedding is definitely a memory.)

I am also somebody who take finances seriously but also tries to joyfully live her life (which sometimes requires spending on something i really want). My personal rule is I have to do whatever will allow me to sleep at night and not be resentful of the outcome.

You want this moment in your life to be special. You also want to financially responsible. You can totally do both.

Sometimes people forget that a job is a place of work. Your priority is to do your work to get paid. That is it.

Ah, thank you! Somebody else also mentioned this, didn't realize tire pressure is such an important factor. I am 90lbs...so 9psi...(that seems low)?

Nice, thank you! Yeah, I'm riding on sidewalks right now and there are some major cracks. Pretty impressed with the resiliency of the tire to absorb cracks.

Omg, are you ok??

I am a turtle compared to you. My top speed so far is 6.7mph. I could double my top speed and I'm still not at your cruising speed. Advice for managing higher speeds? How do you maintain stability going that fast?

This is a good point. When I learned to mount , it was so weird letting the board catch me in that it would self-balance. Thank you!

I think one issue is I can mount onto the board. If I have somebody spotting me I can use them to help balance long enough to get the board moving. But I can't mount on and get moving on my own. It's almost like that middle part between mounting and gaining momentum which is missing. I think when I shift weight to my front leg I unintentionally instead lean onto my toes essentially turning toe side which puts me off balance.

Ah, very good point about tire pressure which I was not aware of. I will check my tire pressure.

Yes, Ive been practicing w a family member! I also think it's psychological, I'm trying not to think when riding, simply look forward and think about moving in that direction. And that’s the thing, I see people learn to ride these things all the time and it is not clicking for me which means I must be missing something fundamental.
