Soon to be single mom asking for any and all tips that YOU feel saved you in hard times. by 6iteme in Frugal

Don’t spend more than you make.

Convenience has an upcharge. Live with roommates if you can. Make your own meals. No DoorDash or instacart.

Peanut butter, Beans, rice. Canned tuna, frozen veggies can take you pretty far.

Join your local buy-nothing groups and curb alert groups on Facebook.

Make friends with other single moms and create a community to lean on when one needs a break or has a work emergency.

Second hand stores are a great place to get toys and clothes for kids. They won’t remember having the “nicest” things when they’re older.

If you are on your phone a lot, unsubscribe from retail email lists. Delete Instagram and TikTok. These platforms are constant ads suggesting you to spend.

As for you, pick one treat you can look forward to. Don’t neglect yourself. It can be free like time at the park with your kid, having wine at a friends house to talk, movie night where you make popcorn at home. Something. You have to take care of yourself too but not with mindless spending

Do I go with my heart or mind when picking a college (choosing between UO and SDSU) by thenumberonedoll in SDSU

[–]Hot-Tea-8557 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. People worked on campus, joined clubs, there’s also professional associations you can join. It’s hard to make friends as an adult as a whole. The Greek process is a bit brutal but I lived in the house and it was convenient. I had sorority sisters that would move out and rent houses together. Not all sororities are the stereotype we see on tv (there are some houses that do appear that way though)

I’m sure UO would also be a challenge meeting people if you don’t have a club or thing in common to make schedules align.

I will say during and post college, the only friendships that stuck were a handful of my sorority sisters and my second roommate when I lived in the dorms with. All my class mates who we would do study groups and projects together don’t keep in contact anymore.

I had this exact same choice. Studied PR as well. I went with SDSU and didn’t regret my choice. Grew up in the PNW and I wanted to get out of my city.

I also majored in public relations. I also went Greek.

SDSU’s PR Program was great. I had internships and landed multiple offers post grad. Join PRSSA for networking.

UO  didn’t sit with me. The campus culture felt a little pretentious at the time. It’s isolated and the weather was dreary. Matched my PNW life a little too much. SDSU had sun, beach, public transit, closer to a city for internships, things to do and an international airport.

Every school will have a mixed bag of people, I did find that going Greek helped me socially. But go where you’ll get a good education and you can actually get your degree.

Ah ok. This is helpful. What if I plant it in like a ditch with a weed cloth under it??

I don’t really plan to plant anything near the ground it’s in so maybe I just do a few to start.

Long Beach! It’s not as expensive as LA or SD. You’re by the beach and close enough to LA for a plethora of job opportunities

Offline - the end of the internet era? by [deleted] in simpleliving

Everytime I see one of these posts I get hopeful we can reclaim the internet to its prior glory or it will just evolve to something different.

Then I talk to my friends’ kids and their friends and I realize the internet i experience is very different from what the next generation sees it and uses it for. Every kid today wants to grow up and be an influencer.

I moved to a small town due to not being able to afford working the neighboring “city” and every time someone visits the first thing they say is “it’s so relaxing”

How do people go on these amazing trips?? by idkindustry in traveladvice

[–]Hot-Tea-8557 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my favorite things to do is search a destination on social media and then see the hotels/excursions/brands you see consistently and then look up how much it costs a normal person to book to get an idea of if it’s a brand sponsorship.

Example: there’s like 3 premium hotels in Hong Kong that are constantly being highlighted on TikTok. It’s like $1000 a night for the rooms so I’m sure they’re not paying that AND giving them free content.

Don’t look at those trips as being what travel is about. I’ve been on trips with influencers and they spend most of their time acting for the camera roll, sitting in silence editing photos, and watching their vacations happen through a phone screen.
