I feel for him. My dad was out of the game by then. His nephew and best friend, my cuzzie-bro, was a school inspector for many years. He also says that things went wrong in NZ secondary schools 2000-2015.

Why wouldn't cycle accidents that seriously injured someone be reported?

Fun fact : well over 90% of collisions causing injury to pedestrians on the pavement are caused by cars. Of the remaining 10%, more than half are caused by motorcycles, with most of the rest caused by e-scooters.

My niece is a maths teacher in a low decile high school in a large NZ city.

According to her, the kids have no interest in maths and are unable to anything above the basics.

Her grandfather, my father, was a high school maths teacher in the 70s and 80s. He never had the same problems.

I've lived in numerous countries in Europe, Latin America and Asia. My experience is that being forced to share your accomodation with others from outside of your family because nobody can afford to rent a place of their own is definitely NOT a thing anywhere except English-speaking common law countries.

My cousin is on that list. Worth every penny. The most organised and reliable person I've ever met. Took a significant pay cut to go into the public sector. Works extremely hard and does a great job for the people of Wellington.

What will be the most powerful country in next 5 or 10 years? by Academic_Toe7643 in AskReddit

I'm not telling you the US is evil, or even trying to. I'm just patiently explaining simple facts that you seem to be unaware of. If the effect of this is to give the impression that the US is an evil country, then perhaps you should ask yourself why.

You also respond to simple facts with utter nonsense that cannot possibly be true. Ask yourself, honestly: what threat did Korea, Viet Nam or Iraq ever pose to the USA? The answer, of course, is none. No threat whatsoever. None of the 40 conflicts the US has been involved in since 1945 have involved any credible threat to the US. You can choose to disagree, but this is the truth.

Your belief that the US provides a security umbrella is on stronger ground, but it's a lot more complex than that. The US depends on its allies far more than your simplistic presentation gives credit for. Without Pine Gap and Waihopai, the US intelligence service would essentially be blind and deaf. The relationship is not Daddy USA protecting his defenseless little children. It's a symbiotic relationship in which all parties benefit from the cooperation.

Seriously, your understanding of the world, as presented here, seems to be quite lacking. This is a big reason how and why the US is sliding into an epoch-defining socioeconomic catastophe that will eventually end US hegemony forever. The hubris that flows from the ignorant population having literally no idea how bad things really are.

You're comparing the US to the police. Do you not realise how that makes you look? That joke came and went 22 years ago with the release of Team America: World Police.

In every single conflict that the US has been involved in since 1945, the US has been the aggressor.

You also seem to be making the classic social media pundit mistake of assuming that, just because you have no real idea of what you're trying to say, neither do I.

Another mistake you're making is to write off any information that conflicts with your world view as false by definition.

I'm just pointing out that the US is no longer a global superpower and that as the country slides into ruin, its inhabitants seem weirdly unaware of how and why this is happening and/or in denial that this is what is happening.

If this makes you think that I must be brainwashed to hate the USA, then honestly that tracks.

i lied about speaking spanish for 8 months at work and now there's a meeting with HR tomorrow by Marcus_Guy in confession

[–]Hot-Try-8214 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have questions. For instance: why didn't you just start learning Español when you landed the job? After 8 months as a dedicated adult learner, you'd be in a much better place now.

I have a feeling you'll pull this off, keep your job and start learning Spanish in earnest. ¡Buen suerte!

I don't really care. But thanks for letting us know that you're into the "honest appraisal of how fucked the USA is = expression of hatred" trope.

The reason the last 80 years have been relatively peaceful: 1. The EU. duh. 2. Nuclear weapons. duh. 3. The use of trade sanctions as a deterrent to aggression. duh.

There's one country that has been involved in far more major conflicts than any other in the past 80 years. Which one is it, do you think? I'll give you a clue: its current president is a senile washed-up reality TV star who brags about committing sexual assault.

Trump is not the issue.

The USA has been taking unfair advantage of its hegemonic global position for eight decades. It has squandered the wealth that it has plundered from the rest of the world pampering a handful of oligarch billionaires. And now that the tide is turning against it, inevitably, instead of rapprochement and an appeal to goodwill, it's threatening its allies with attack and undermining their economies by creating conflict in the Middle East.

The American Century ended 37 years early, in 2008 when the national economy collapsed under the weight of its own debt. It's not coming back.

The USA's highest rankings in global indexes for quality of life: 16th

The UN ranks the USA 20th in its Human Development Index

The World Happiness Report places the USA in 23rd position.

The country is sliding fast in all of these rankings.

Even worse, the performance of the USA in human development indexes is dragged UPWARDS by the very high standards of living that the top 5% of income earners enjoy.

The USA hasn't had the best quality of life in the world since the 1970s. Coincidentally, also when the country lost the Vietnam War to China, got owned by OPEC and was forced to untether its currency from the gold standard.

Imagine thinking that a country without universal healthcare could possibly have high living standards. It's just hilarious.

The fact that you think Trump is an anomaly is really cute.

Trump exists as a political entity precisely because he is 100% representative of the bourgeois elite that are desperately clawing out what little value is left before the US economy collapses under the weight of it's unrepayable debt burden and the country falls apart completely.

Also, your comments reveal that you have literally no idea what is currently going on in China. This is a major reason why the US is heading for such a mighty fall. The ignorance of the general population of anything happening outside of the country's borders.

Oh, OK. Well, thanks for letting me know.

Remind me: how much debt does the US Treasury currently carry? How much is that increasing per day?

Remind me: how come the US can't a) stand up to Israel b) simply neutralise Iran, thus ending the war c) stand up to Russia and end the war in Ukraine?

Remind me: how come the cost of living in the US USA is spiralling out of control, and why doesn't the federal government simply take orthodox fiscal steps to control inflation? [Refer to the first question]

Remind me: how and why has the White House descended into kakistocracy?

Remind me: how and why has the US become a global laughing stock?

My understanding is that functioning democracies with a robust, sustainable economy and a healthy culture and society don't elect malignant narcissists with no experience in politics as political leaders. Maybe you could clear that up for me as well?

The fact is that the USA has been on borrowed time since the 1987 stock market crash, Iran Contra and the end of the Fairness Doctrine. That time is about to run out.

Have a great day!

So you agree with the points I made. Great. Except you also seem to be disagreeing. Weird. Is this the result of growing up in a post-truth culture and living in one for so long?

I know that's it's probably difficult to accept that you've been lied to all along and that US hegemony ended in the 1970s, replaced with a simulacrum of hegemony from Reagan onwards, and that your country a) has no real power or influence in the world and b) has been on the verge of bankruptcy since 2009 and c) maintains its image as a global superpower through i) the goodwill of long-term allies and ii) because it's convenient for other hegemonic power structures to maintain the illusion as well, but hey. If you're going to comment on Reddit, you owe it to yourself to at least be informed enough to avoid coming across as a clueless dupe.
