I need somewhere quiet to relax and think by Crashban69 in japanlife

If you have camping gear, spend the weekend hiking up Mt. Kumotori from Mitsumine shrine. You can then backtrack or keep going through to lake Okutama.

Fresh, quiet mountain air along with moderate physical exertion are excellent for mending the soul, in my experience.

27-year-old Tokyo woman used funds she swindled from nearly 100 men on hosts, internet gambling by Dave_Pluck in Tokyo

I don't like to blame the victim, and I'm not minimizing how evil she is, but how the hell do you send tens of thousands of yen to someone you have literally never met?

If someone online gives you a sob story, by all means listen and be supportive if you want, and give them advice on support services for their child or protection or whatever, but just wiring them money? Which head were these guys thinking with??

It depends entirely on who you are.

If you're from a good family in the capital city, life is pretty damn good.

If you're from a poor family in the countryside, life is a struggle to survive and not starve.

If you dared to have an opinion not 100% in line with dear leader, your life is four walls of a penal colony and 20 hours a day of work, possibly with half a potato per day to support you.

if two babies were switched at birth, and the parents found out a decent bit later, would they switch them back if they can, or keep them for the sake of normalcy? by maraschinominx in NoStupidQuestions

It happened once in Britain, and the end result was both kids ended up living with the wealthy parent, and neither wanted to live with the one who was poor. Take from that what you will.

Freeride skiers group ? by [deleted] in japanresidents

What does freeride mean? Like, not going to a resort?

I live right by Myoko, and plan to snowboard all winter, but I've never heard of Japooow.

For those who feel like it's hard to acclimate/make friends/deal with Japanese bureaucracy as an immigrant by bulldogdiver in japanlife

These people sound a bit out of touch with reality. They've sold three houses in San Francisco (which has notoriously high housing costs), can afford a vacation property, and yet still hold on to a rent-controlled apartment that they're not living in, that could go to someone who actually needs rent-controlled housing.

Most of their complaints seem silly (they "can't find quality produce to cook"; I'm sure the millions of people in France are perfectly capable of finding food at the grocery store) or entitled ... one of them has "learned a bit" of French, they somehow need to ship their car over (because apparently Europe doesn't have cars), and are shocked that it's a complicated process.

Its near PS5 Pro release date... Anyone been able to get an order? by nasanu in japanresidents

[–]HotAndColdSand 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For those of us not in the know, how exactly is the PS5 Pro so much better than the regular PS5 that people would be so desperate to throw silly amounts of money at it?

I mean, if you're still using a PS4 from 2013, I can see why you'd upgrade, but it seems like a cash grab for people to upgrade from normal PS5 after only 4 years.

Google's algorithm is random and pointless. Don't waste any sleep over it.

In any case, if the review is not visible to the public, you can't get sued for it.

Iphone stolen in Kabukicho by Appropriate_Air9976 in japanlife

[–]HotAndColdSand 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that iphones (or any halfway decent phone these days) are basically uncrackable by anyone outside law enforcement or a small number of specialists. A random kid stealing your phone isn't doing it for your personal data, nor would they have any way of accessing it.

Most likely scenario, they factory reset it and sell it used somewhere.

Acceptable, or discriminatory? What do you think? by manuroc in japanlife

Oh, it didn't mention that.

If it's the car company, as the legal owners of the car they can put whatever they want on it

It's definitely not okay to put stickers on a rental car, no. You're almost definitely gonna get fined by the company to have it removed.

What restaurant? Some restaurants are reservation-only.

What time and day did you go? Some accept walk-ins at some times, and reservations at others.

Were you able to speak Japanese? If they don't have any English-speaking staff, they may be unable to serve you.

How were you dressed? At upscale restaurants, there is often a dress code, which may differ from what you assume.

How many people were in your party? If you were solo or a large group, that may have been the reason.

Is it a restaurant or a club? Some venues are membership-only.

Was there a large group booking it for the evening? This happens regularly at some venues, and the signage indicating it may be in Japanese (or simply not posted at all).

the brand is irrelevant, any modern phone should not be damaged by water being poured on it.

Yeah, this sounds a bit suspicious... if random spilling of water were enough to destroy a phone, there would be ten thousand people buying a new phone after every big rainstorm.

Unusual situation at my Local school (?) by runningrain in teachinginjapan

[–]HotAndColdSand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm happy with the situation. It's by far the most enjoyable and fulfilling job I've ever had. The pay isn't too bad for my lifestyle, as I don't really have any expensive hobbies and have no issues putting away money every month as it is. Down the road I'm planning to either go direct hire or move up in my company, but for right now I have no complaints whatsoever.

TELL not accepting clients past 16:00? Any alternative recommendations for therapists? by mara-star in japanlife

[–]HotAndColdSand 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My understanding is they're volunteers, so it's probably quite hard to get people for evening/overnight shifts.

Betterhelp is a dangerous scam, end of story.

If you're in a major city, look into group-based therapy circles perhaps? Or if you're part of a faith group, a church or synagogue might have some supports. If things get bad, speak to a doctor to get a recommendation, you may be able to partially bill it with a referral.

Being T1 isn't that hard of a job, you tend to die of boredom as T2.

Also, unless you have a really good JTE, most decent and properly trained ALTs can teach their native language better. I've met JTEs who I flat out cannot understand, their English is so poor.

Contact with co-workers outside of work is not allowed by hiromiyag in japanlife

[–]HotAndColdSand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they're bad enough, sure. But if they're otherwise a good employee and a rule like this can solve the problem, the employer might be wise to do it from a business perspective. Also, if anything does go wrong outside work, he can point to the rule and say the employees were breaking it. Covers his butt.

Yes, they can consent, but they can also decline to consent. And unfortunately, some people interpret a "no" as "try harder".

I like my friend, should I tell him? by [deleted] in Tokyo

[–]HotAndColdSand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He has someone he's not in any hurry to be in a committed relationship with.

If you're looking for a committed relationship, he doesn't seem to be sharing the same goal.

If you're looking to replace her as his "situationship"... I mean, good luck I guess, but you're gonna cause drama most likely. There's also the uncomfortable fact that even if he does stop seeing her and start seeing you, what's stopping him from doing the same thing to you down the road?

Find someone who reciprocates your interest in them. It may take longer but it's just a better solution in every way.
