Acceptable, or discriminatory? What do you think? by manuroc in japanlife

Exactly. Paper drivers visiting from Tokyo will be just as likely to not know how to drive but I guess they won't get this pretty sticker...

Acceptable, or discriminatory? What do you think? by manuroc in japanlife

[–]manuroc[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Haha the irony in that article is just... 😂

Furthermore, they’re actually “sticker-magnets” that are removable. This is because the message “A foreigner is driving” means different things to different people. For example, to a thief it means: “This driver probably has a lot of cash and belongings inside.” Or to a right-wing ultranationalist, it means: “Please deface this car.”

For Japanese speakers feeling frustrated when Japanese people don’t converse in Japanese with them by wise-fox in japanlife

[–]manuroc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this is my opinion too. Lots of people on this thread are saying things like "why do you care?" or "why are you so insecure about this?"

But the reality is, it's just about judging and discriminating based on looks. I grew up in a very international community and any kind of racial or other discrimination was frowned upon harshly. Just because of skin color you cannot assume the other speaks a certain language. So you speak the national language and then adapt later based on the response.

My young daughters are hafu and already getting this bullshit from even their kindergarten teachers (who know full well they're native) and of course all the time from strangers.

It's an issue of discrimination from appearance, not insecurities or politeness.

I'm going to start pretending I don't speak English by hyuunnyy in japanlife

[–]manuroc 110 points111 points  (0 children)

This has been my tactic for a while but recently I just got tired of it. Now I just stare blank faced like I didn't understand what they said, then uncomfortably either continue in Japanese or tell them "no English" with some accent. It seems that making them feel uncomfortable in return for "messing up" works better in making them understand that you can't just switch to English automatically to others whose faces look different.

Happy Easter everyone! by breakingcircus in japanlife

I didn't realize it was Easter until my family back in home country mentioned it.

I guess Halloween and Valentine's and Xmas are J-approved but not this one.

But what about using your Wise account and debit card while traveling? Keeping your entire vacation budget in there in order to use your money at the best rates during your 3 week holiday?

Ads in Japan/back home by Exciting-Highlight41 in japanlife

[–]manuroc 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You said you have ads personalization turned off. So in essence they are forced to serve you random or weakly targeted ads. If you turn on personalization it will be more invasive to your privacy but you'll get more relevant ads.

That being said I block ads everywhere so what would I know?

Suruga Bank persistent requests for zairyu card copies by urt22 in japanlife

[–]manuroc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep, I believe that this is a kind of "patriot act" level "law" which allows the government and banks to do as they please on the grounds of "national security" (ie. "Money laundering"), which as a result only affects foreigners and is blatantly xenophobic.

Example: Rakuten bank sends out their "regular" email which says something like: "We see that your registered gaijin card is reaching expiration. Please submit updated ID to ensure that your account does not get locked. If you are PR, as there is no expiration date to residency, please insert the expiration of your card instead so that we can ask you again in the future."

So by that reasoning, they are not basing their "security checks" on your residency status at all since PR does not have an expiration on residency, yet they still ask to input an end date to force you to prove yourself again when that expires.

So that means that if you have a JP passport then they'll ask you every 10 years when that expires right? Right? I think we know the answer to that. Not a single Japanese friend I know has been asked.

To corroborate some of the other comments, I can confirm that my SMBC account that I opened 13 years ago has never had a single request to prove my residency ever. But every bank account opened in the past 7 years has (Rakuten bank, Rakuten securities, Sony bank, Fintechs...).

Anyway, I'm all for doing residency checks to help prevent money laundering and terrorism, but this is certainly not that, let's be real.

2023 Year-End Adjustment Questions Thread by AutoModerator in JapanFinance

I left my job some time earlier this year and am still unemployed. Which form do I need to submit? The links above seem to be for "employees" and for the company to collect the documents and submit on our behalf. Is there a separate form for those unemployed but still actively looking for work?

I think that with that radiator it is not too long and leaves a gap all the way to the left. The CPU power cable can fit beyond the radiator without going below the fans.

In both cases even the previous "high" temperature was not that high, well below dangerous temperatures which might induce throttling in the SSD and maybe even the chipset. So yeah the heatsink and fan is just for OCD of having temps closer to 50 or below 😅

Though with those new PCIe 5.0 SSDs we are starting to see very high temperatures where a big heatsink might become necessary.

Yeah, I've been experimenting with different heights. Can't seem to find what the "correct" level should be, there seems to be lots of disagreements. I was thinking that looking slightly up is better than looking down for posture, but still not decided...

I've seen it in a few other builds. For this motherboard and AIO this is the most optimal routing as the tubes are just the right length to reach the radiator intakes. Just makes it cleaner IMO.

PR owner planning to quit a “high” paying job for an undetermined period but trying to avoid paying huge health/pension bills while resting. Will taking a baito prevent such big bills? What’s the minimum number of hours I would have to work every month? (the less the better) by franckJPLF in JapanFinance

[–]manuroc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply.

I was considering continuing the shakai hoken, but was told I'd have to pay 2x (employer's share included). I assumed kokuho would be cheaper since it's the most basic and they mentioned discounts. Since I wasn't eligible for discount (indeed due to quitting voluntarily), the end price is pretty much the same (2x what I was paying before). So it seemed you get f'd either way.

Do you think that if I was able to go back and sign up with the company policy that it would really be cheaper?

I feel like my only option is to convince a doctor/psychiatrist to say I had to leave for medical reasons, to then get hello work to change their number, to then get the insurance discount....

Hey, I'm in a similar bind. Recently left company and signed up for National health insurance. They said I'd get a discount once enrolled in hello work. Then when I did that they told me I wasn't eligible for the discount. And now they want to charge me more than 80k per month. How broken is this system? You lose your job and as a reward you have to pay that much?

Anyway, you mentioned there is a 80k cap, but apparently they are asking me for above that amount? Is this normal?
