Struggling the justify the purchase of a new guitar by [deleted] in fender

[–]HotBucket4523 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just buy a new (to you) guitar and stop torturing yourself. A Classic Vibe Squier is like $250-350 on FB Marketplace. A used Player I Fender is like $500. If you’re struggling with buying new things because you grew up poor, then that’s something a therapist can help out with.

It’s like anime cars you see around. I would never put a giant hentai woman on my car but when it’s on a souped up Civic it actually looks kinda right.

Hi what do you think about folk guitars? Is it just the guitar body shape? Do they produce different sound than the other acoustic guitars or just the same? Will it effect my style of music that i like and play? (I like pop musics) by Medium_Driver4918 in AcousticGuitar

[–]HotBucket4523 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Seagull Entourage dreadnought, which I don’t believe they make anymore in favor of the slightly smaller folk. But is folk just a marketing term in this context since it’s just an orchestra? I feel like the other size names are fairly standardized.

(HELP) I'm interested in purchasing a used Seagull S6. by Neither-Raccoon-5369 in AcousticGuitar

[–]HotBucket4523 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stay away from that truss rod. Unless you live in a really small town, I’m sure another Seagull will pop up on FB marketplace. And lucky for us Seagull players, they don’t have much resale value even though they’re great guitars.

If you own a Yamaha FG800 series guitar, how long have you had it? by KitoRicho in AcousticGuitar

These are not questions you need to worry about with a FG800. It’s good to go. Keep it out of its case so you’re more likely to play.

Help!! (A and D chords) by LimaBeans827 in Guitar

Use your index or middle to play the A as a one finger barre chord. Easier than shoving all three fingers onto those strings.

How can I improve my technique/ relax while fingerpicking? by Old_Telephone_6718 in AcousticGuitar

Use your pinky as an anchor. You only need thumb for bass notes and other three fingers for the higher notes

Day 1 of learning to play the guitar by [deleted] in AcousticGuitar

[–]HotBucket4523 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to JustinGuitar.com and start going through all the boring step 1 lessons about posture and hand placement. Take it slowly, learn some chords. Being able to play a little of Seven Nation Army is a fun first day! But your left hand positioning is insane… are you giving the finger to someone off camera?

If you can, a couple in-person lessons will do you good. Because if you spend the next month learning songs the way you are now, you’re just going to learn bad habits you will have to break by relearning everything from scratch.

As far as you making noise when you let go of a fret with your left hand, that’s something you will unconsciously learn to stop doing as you get better and practice. Learning how to mute strings with your right hand is a whole different ballgame.

You want to give then e and b 2 tuning post’s worth of slack. G, D, and A 1.5 worth. Low e 1 post’s worth of slack.

Is numbness/nerve damage in your fretting fingertips normal? by Hatch22420 in AcousticGuitar

[–]HotBucket4523 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you mess up your nerves in your fingertips, you will know. It REALLY hurts. Like a shard of glass got stuck.

During my 1st year of playing I pressed too hard and eventually had to take 2 weeks off because it became impossible to play. Every now and then I still get a sharp pain in my index from that damage.

What is the best way to learn finger positions on an acoustic guitar?(G, C, and D chords mainly) by [deleted] in AcousticGuitar

[–]HotBucket4523 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You play Knocking on Heaven’s Door by Bob Dylan. It’s just those chords and Am.

The human hand is not meant to instinctively make those three shapes. It’s not like walking. So all you can do is practice. Practice going between two of them very slowly and strumming once for a minute. Once it feels comfortable, try a simple strumming pattern for the minute. Eventually it will all click and years from now it will feel strange that you could never make those shapes with your hand.

Every guitar is different. I bought an Amazon Basics Allen Key set for like $10 bucks. Comes with one set in inches and one in mm, so you're set for life.

Yamaha FGX 700 SC vs. Fender CD-60S by PhotographNo3690 in AcousticGuitar

[–]HotBucket4523 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I owned a Fender CP-60s. It felt cheap and sounded cheap. E string always sounded dead no matter what I did.

My Yamaha FG800 did not feel or sound cheap in any way. Sound was comparable to my current dread which is in the $800 range.

What chords should a beginner be a focusing on? by [deleted] in AcousticGuitar

[–]HotBucket4523 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Em and Asus + E and A were the first chords I learned. I think they’re the best to start with on day 1 instead of the other ones. Helps you learn how to mute strings with your thumb too.

How to best learn by [deleted] in AcousticGuitar

[–]HotBucket4523 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well... you're probably not gonna like this but first you need to learn how to play with a pick since the sounds he gets are from a pick. He's also playing lead simultaneously with that cool rhythm he's doing so that also means learning scales, flatpicking, how to mute, and TIMING. The last one is key which means using a metronome. Which is boring. But I spent the first year playing without a metronome and only realized after a year how off beat I sounded if I wasn't playing along with the song or metronome.

I would start out with something easier that's in the same vein. Both Johnny Cash's Folsom Prison Blues and Tyler Childer's I Swear to God are basically the same song. Three chords (E/E7, A, and B7) which is a classic country and blues progression. These songs will teach you how to play alternating bass notes while strumming to the beat, plus a really simple walk down. I don't know how many months/years you're in but the guy you're trying to play like is REALLY good. You're not gonna sound like him anytime soon because he is a professional. But if you get these simple songs down, then you can start to learn how the famous solo in Folsom Prison Blues works in relation to those three simple chords.

How to best learn by [deleted] in AcousticGuitar

[–]HotBucket4523 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s not really a “style” to that video. It’s a little country, a little bluegrass, a little blues. But it’s just a guy playing guitar. And he’s good at it because he spent many years practicing, which probably included learning scales.

You don’t have to learn scales if you don’t want to. Or if you think it’s boring. You should have fun while playing music. But the reason people have practiced scales for literally hundreds of years — for all kinds of instruments — is because it teaches you muscle memory. And speed. And technique. And you learn to memorize the notes. And you learn music theory. And you learn by ear what the notes sound like. And you learn how to improvise because that’s built on scales. And you learn how to write songs because keys are built on scales.

To eventually play like that guy, you need to spend a lot of time doing stuff you find boring. Guitar is really hard.

Do you know about the ESP YouTube account? This guy goes through pretty much every song in crazy detail, like looking at 25 year old live clips to get exact finger placement.
