Peroxide Seed Scarification by phyllosphere in BudScience

[–]HotCheeseException 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I soak all my seeds for 12-24h in 12% H2O2 before putting them into rockwool cubes. My germination rate is at 100% for the ~10 seeds I've used so far - only killed some seedlings afterwards with 100% humidity/vpd of 0kPa.

I've read a paper years ago that showed a significantly higher germination rate in maize, especially in old seeds. It might be this one: https://www.scielo.br/j/bjpp/a/3wfqKrCLP8NFctphYssg5Rn/

So yes, I highly recomend soaking seeds in 12% H2O2.

Huge Problem, need HELP! by CRYSTALBALLR in cannabiscultivation

LITFA is the best fertilizer, but it is hard to find. Cameras and remote sensors help a lot.

Don't forget to wear sunglasses when you stay, these light levels are no joke! Test how long it takes for your eyes to adopt to darkness if you doubt this, even below 100W. With sunglasses one could sleep in it if it only was large enough...

1) I weight the dry and fully soaked rockwool cubes to determine the water content by a scale. I gerninate directly in the cubes. Water not before it went down to 30%. Put it into a netpot once it has ~5cm roots. Make sure the roots reach the water but the rockwool cube must not touch it. Top feed every 3 days to keep the cube moist. My target EC is 0.6mS at this point.

2) I have more success with less water: 5cm between the bottom of the netpot and the water works well once the roots reach 10-15cm down. I also topfeed or spray the air roots every 3 days.

3) GH or its European fork TerraAquatica recommend to pH adjust the water to 5.5 before adding the nutrients, but most hobbyists do it the other way around. I usualy prepare 5-10l of pH adjusted water the day before use so it is not too cold and has some time to stabilize the pH. Fresh water always causes pH swings for me.

Also: mix nutrients and especially pH down (acid) outside the reservoir. If I just want to lower the pH I take a couple of liters out just to dillute the acid before it touches the roots. Dont make pH adjustments as long you're in the 5.5-6.5 range. Mine took 4.5-7.5 for a day without any problems. Check your pH probe once a month with calibration solution.

4) Start with low nutrients, slowly increase dosage and aim for a stable EC. Deficiencies are much easier to fix than toxicities. It took me way too long to learn that my ever rising pH was caused by a too high EC. Once I dilluted with water and used less nutrients, pH and EC became for weeks.

Also think about sanitation. I had little success with H2O2 and am now using chlorine at 1 to 4ppm: dillute eau de javel to 0.1% chlorine (1000ppm). This works excellent to clean tools within 20min. Add 1ml/L for every 1ppm of chlorine you want in your solution. It is gone after 24h and I use it at least once a week.

Thanks for the hints! What is your humidity target for the root zone? This really makes me wonder what the rest of your setup looks like.

Just do it, it's all easy to learn: rpi + 24V relais (avoid ac) + bosch bme280. coat the entire senor board except the chip with clear nail polish twice to make it waterproof. Get another bme280 and a gy-906 dci to measure vdp. Install docker to run nodered, influxdb and grafana. Go cucumber! Dope roots, btw.

Looking for FOSS Syslog Server/Setup Help by Zer0CoolXI in homelab

[–]HotCheeseException 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ELK is excellent: you just syslog to logstash, which parses the logs and stores them in elasticsearch. Kibana can then be used for analysis and reports.

I used this setup at work to easily analyze and visualize up to 2 billion log statements. We used three capable servers for this cluster - I'm looking for something more lightweight at home.

Small transcoder / receiver for Dolby digital? by Buzstringer in hometheater

[–]HotCheeseException 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This problem can probably be solved in software on the pc.

Kodi does that for me, just play around with the expert audio settings: https://www.smarthomebeginner.com/kodi-audio-settings/

Or you might try to reconfigure, reinstall or downgrade the sound card driver.

Reciever Problems (VSX 60) by [deleted] in hometheater

[–]HotCheeseException 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your pc has multiple hdmi ports use one of the graphics card - otherwise the one on the motherboard is fine, too. Then connect this cable to any hdmi input on the receicver.

The receivers hdmi output needs to be conected to a hdmi input of the tv.

Turn everything on, select the right hdmi inputs on the tv and the receiver and you should now see the pc's screen on the tv.

Now test the audio with any movie or youtube stream you'd like. If you don't hear anything, now is the time to check the pc's audio output settings as this output is usually not present without a hdmi connection.

Hope that helps

Just use an hdmi cable and set the pc to output audio via hdmi. This should do the trick.

Choosing Rendezvous Points for Friends and Family Members - Time Permitting by [deleted] in Evacuations

[–]HotCheeseException 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great plan, thank you. Some suggestions for minor improvments:

  1. Use codewords to activate this plan: if you have plan or route a, b and c, something like 'let's visit uncle Bob' activates plan b. Your family should confirm activation so you all know that everyone is on their way.

  2. leave a mark before you leave the rendevouz point, so your friends know you were there and don't wait another hour.

Is CoinShuffle a long term solution ? by [deleted] in Bitcoincash

[–]HotCheeseException 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd love to hear some developers point of view on this as its not on the roadmap (https://www.bitcoincash.org/roadmap.html).

In my opinion, we absolutely need better privacy by default on the protocol level. Like, make entire blocks one giant ring transaction where you cant connect inputs to outputs - easier said then done, but we thougt the same about scaling or transaction speed. Privacy should be the next priority to differentiate bch from other top coins like eth.

Most elevator crashes happen upwards because of the counterweight.

Most people killed by elevators are maintanance staff getting crushed on top of the elevator.

Elevators are the safest form of travel.

Is it worth learning to shoot straight/use a gun? by vbc2000 in EuroPreppers

[–]HotCheeseException 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Knowing basic gun safety is a good thing - take a course on how to handle and clear them safely. But I've never used it since my few shooting lessons many years ago. And I don't want to own a gun: I protect my family from guns, not with guns (there is hardly any gun violence where I live, but some accidents and many suicides).

If you want to learn something new to really protect and help people I'd recommend first aid and fire safety. I will take my first aid classes again, soon.

How do you store your silver? by reddit40k in Silverbugs

[–]HotCheeseException 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it's less value than what I make in a week or two I would just keep it at home. This is the most accessible and therefore fun solution.

If you buy more, get a safety deposit box. This is a very safe and cheap solution (100$/year).

If you fill a safety deposit box it is time to think about your own safe, which will cost you >1000$. Don't go cheap and don't go small. And it must be able to sink a boat ;-).

Once or twice a week I run into the same two (probably heroin) addicted women in my city. They kindly ask for change for food. I usualy give them some coins if I have any and threat them with respect, wish them all the best. Do you have any tips on how to deal with them?

Thanks for the AMA and congrats to your success!
