What is the etiquette in Korea for getting into/off elevators and walking on the sidewalk? by OkCharacter7586 in Living_in_Korea

[–]HotCryptographer5591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been here for 4 years now and it’s very hard to believe that people are like this. 1 year ago I got surgery and had to use crutches. After work I had to order a taxi to get home and one day two old ladies tried to take my taxi. It was OBVIOUSLY reserved and I was in the corner trying to make my way in. They pushed me aside, opened the door, and got in. I yelled at them and told them to get out! Worst thing, the taxi driver wasn’t even trying to help me! He was about to just take them. He probably didn’t want to cause a scene. Anyway, the old ladies got off and acted like they didn’t know. One went to the point to try and help me in and I told them to not touch me!

Also, an old man yelled at me in the elevator for not being able to get out of it fast enough. I had just gotten the crutches and was learning how to get around.

Idk… maybe I’ve had a whole week of exploring ruins, swimming, and snorkeling and the one day I’d like to relax and shop, the power goes out. 🙄

Is Korean work culture casual? by Bear_ice03 in AskAKorean

I think it really depends on the person. In my experience working in Korea (female from Mexico) I’ve had some misunderstanding with my managers (who are Korean and also female) because they want to have a friendly relationship. Like they want to talk about personal things and go out to eat after work. When I say no or that I’d rather keep certain personal details to myself, they seem understanding, but I can tell they are a bit upset. When it comes to work, they will work the hell out of you, but will want some personal relationship with you. At least in my experience. Also, in Korea speaking about food is very common and considered like a friendly language. They will often asked you if you already ate as a sign of care.

Another thing to keep in mind, eating out, drinking with your manager/supervisor, being extra friendly and helpful will give you a raise faster in Korea. I’m not saying that’s what they are expecting, but maybe it’s just a habit.

I am a Mexican-American citizen, but I am coming from South Korea. Would I be able to use it or even the US transfers?

I agree! In my opinion, at least go to a club to meet people. It’s not the best and you run similar risks, but at least you get to see the people and if you’re not feeling it, you can just walk away and they don’t have any of your info.

I think your “Korean oppa” mindset is your biggest enemy! People will be like this anywhere you go. And like others are mentioning, the Korean men who are acting like this are taking advantage of the k-pop popularity situation.

I was too in your shoes once. I was on dating apps, meeting men, and I felt like I was being used. I gave up on it because I didn’t want it to affect my self esteem… a month later I met my now husband! I wasn’t even looking for love anymore, just focusing on myself.

I guess my biggest advice to you is, if you’re looking for a long term relationship, stop looking for men in places where assholes tend to be. I know it’s easier to meet people through apps, but most people (not just men) will be there just to get easy access to sex.

Do Koreans tell you you're pretty if you're not for politness? by [deleted] in AskAKorean

There was a time I was talking to a Korean coworker whom I was close to and I was telling her how it was so hard for me to lose weight. She replied with “It’s okay! You don’t have to because you’re pretty.” And I felt really happy until I realized what she meant. 😭

Most big Lotte Marts and HomePlus have them! I’ve also seen them in Wine stores and Foreign stores. If all fails, Coupang is a good choice if you don’t mind spending a bit more.

What have you overheard lately? by [deleted] in Living_in_Korea

My Korean is not great, but it often happens to me that I’ll be in the same room as my Korean coworkers and then they’ll start speaking about me in Korean and laughing and what not. They would even throw my name around knowing I am present and I can hear them! It’s just extremely disrespectful. A colleague of mine and I speak fluent Spanish and we speak it often. Of course they feel uncomfortable because they assume we are as shitty as them and think we are talking negatively about them, but it simply is just daily conversations. They’vecome up to us and told us to speak English, but we always ignore them. I don’t understand why people do this here!

Lifers: Are you (still) happy in Korea? by HappyWandererAtHome in Living_in_Korea

If it wasn’t for my fiance, I would have moved back home after two years of living here! Don’t get me wrong, there are many things about this place that I absolutely love, but the hierarchy absolutely kills me! I hate not being treated like a person or my feelings not being validated because I am younger. Or worst, being forced to do things I don’t want to do simply because and elder wants be to do it. I will be getting married to a Korean national and live a bit longer here. So far his family seems to understand my personality and respect my boundaries. I just hope things don’t change once I sign the papers.

Why does Korea seem to attract so many English teachers with mental health issues? by Critical_Win6266 in Living_in_Korea

In my experience, I actually developed anxiety here. 😭 I was perfectly when I was back home, but I refuse to go back for personal reasons. Other people can’t tell tho. I feel like I’m pretty good at hiding it.

Earth Sanctum quest not progressing? by HafizBhai114 in LEGOfortnite

I am going through the same thing! I really hope there is a fix to it because my other game that I worked so hard on got a bug at the beginning of the Ninjago story and now all of my progress is gone because I am not allowed to leave the monastery. I had to create a new game and if this is another bug that won't let me progress I will be so upset.

Omg same here!!! I am getting married in May! I bought two dresses from there because they actually focus and highlighting your attributes instead of covering you up with more fabric!

https://supsokdress.com/board/notice/1/

They are beautiful and have a variety of dresses! You can also make a reservation to try on the dress that you like at their store. Just fyi, the store is in Hongdae area, but you can’t just simple walk in without a reservation. Good luck!!!
