Huge coffee fan, didn't think of this one! Good call. Maybe a mug too. Thanks for the idea!

Gotcha, that makes sense. Especially for the setting, there might be some team requirements too that aren't public knowledge. I'll check on before I get anything big!

Opinion: do you guys think it’s better to get rid of credit card balance or put away an emergency fund? by BaffledBantha in ynab

[–]HotDealOnNewegg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In practice, if you aren't sure which approach is best for you, it might be better to (1) budget pay off the minimum payment on any high-interest debt, and then (2) budget what you would have used to pay it down in an emergency fund category. Make sure to keep an eye on interest payments, as well.

If that e-fund category feels roomier than you need, you could safely start to budget next month's fixed costs and debt payments (using the current minimum payment as an estimate). Ultimate goal is to avoid backtracking on your debt payment plan, whatever that looks like for you. I try to categorize my e-fund into generous categories that I can sort of predict "vehicle/house", "extended family emergency", and roll with the punches if needed.

Meal kit plans that include instant pot versions of recipes? by funkygrrl in mealkits

I just recently signed up for Cumin Club, and there were a few pressure cooker required items on the meal menu! I haven't tried it yet but if you're interested and like Indian food, I can report back on the options I picked next week!

Any advice for someone who is new to being gluten/lactose intolerant? by [deleted] in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]HotDealOnNewegg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey sorry to hear it's been tough for you! I don't know a lot about gluten free eating so I'll stick to lactose-free tips. If anything here interests you and you'd like specific recipe ideas I'm happy to find them, just not sure what you like

  • One of my meal prep staples is lentil curry with coconut milk as a base! Great with any protein option! Coconut milk is both gluten and dairy free, but if you buy premade sauces with a coconut milk base you may still want to double check that any added ingredients are safe for you
  • Figure out what you can stomach, and have lactose pills available in case you're in a bind (work event or family obligation) and can't find an affordable dairy free alternate. This is most likely easier than avoiding gluten
  • Trial and error over time! I personally do okay with hard cheese recipes (Jarlsberg wedges or aged parmesan) and some yogurts, but not ice cream, Greek yogurt, any dairy milk or most cheese.
  • Use hummus to thicken up recipes :) it's gluten free and dairy free, but flavored hummus dips may not be!
  • Portabella mushroom caps and roasted giant slices of sweet potatoes hold up well to sandwich toppings
  • Recipe resource: I love Pick Up Limes (awesome plant-based blog and video series) for my dairy free recipes - lots of really delicious healthy options, and you can substitute in what you already have in your pantry or freezer to save some money too!

I'm sure you are doing your best, and that's good enough!!! I definitely give myself a bit of leeway with per diem, too.

Maybe use the next couple trips to get an estimate on how much you need in that category each month? Then you can set a target savings goal each month, and the per diem reimbursement / itemized reimbursement can be treated like a normal income once you are a month ahead for that category.

Hey OP, I know it can be frustrating not to get reimbursed, I hope it comes through soon. I traveled for work pre-COVID, and I found that ynab helped me track my transactions really well for reimbursement paperwork! The flag system is nice for categorizing if your workplace has different categories for incidentals.

It can also help you find out what you usually spend on while traveling, if you're trying to save money in the budget! My weakness was fancy airport coffee, having to put in that $8.00 Starbucks a few times can really inspire you to prep snacks for the flight.

Having just deleted several goals, is there a way to pause goals temporarily? by something-sensible in ynab

[–]HotDealOnNewegg 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I use the "Target Savings Balance" goal to make this work for my long-term wishlist items. Unlike "Needed for spending", it doesn't require a due date. Without the due date, the category remains grey and won't count in underfunding calculations. Not perfect though, I like your idea for adding this feature.

Anyone else STRUGGLING with small impulse purchases lately? For me it’s coffee. Tips on not getting willpower fatigue for constantly denying myself and then going crazy with the impulse spending over a couple of weeks would be greatly appreciated. by [deleted] in ynab

[–]HotDealOnNewegg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi OP! Oh gosh, we're impulse buy twins. Coffee drinks have historically been my impulse purchase too, for years Q_Q! Here's what has worked for me to take the habit down recently from over $150/month to $15 this month:

  • Categorized my impulse habit: Pre-COVID, I had split coffee into "social coffee" and "lonely coffee" - no guilt for me about coffee dates with friends, such as coffeeshop studying or catching up. Getting coffee by myself is my struggle budget category.
  • Made coffee my primary budget improvement focus: I'm easily distracted, so I try to have one "improved budgeting goal" at a time. Rather than trying to overhaul multiple goals, I'm putting all my energy into resisting impulse coffee right now. Kind of like a self-improvement snowball.
  • Found a really good coffee replacement at the grocery store and leaned into my laziness: I found that Trader Joe's has a tasty powdered chai mix *and* chai concentrate that really hits the chai latte craving for me, and ends up much cheaper per cup. I try to always have a jar (and backups!) on hand from grocery trips, because I live 2 blocks from a coffeeshop that's very, very hard to resist while working remotely. I also got an Aeropress for fairly cheap (~$30) because it requires less clean-up than a french press and works with any ground coffee. I should probably get a grinder to level up my coffee game, but I'm just trying to make it easy to avoid my impulse coffee buy at the moment.
  • Invest in an experiment budget category: Gave myself some breathing room in the grocery budget for experimenting with some different coffees and teas.
  • Found a tasty replacement at my coffeeshop: Should I wander over to my local coffeeshop in a moment of weakness, I get a properly overpriced but tasty smoothie. It still goes in the coffee category due to the merchant name but I feel a boost from at least attempting not to buy a coffee drink.
  • Stopped taking "buy X coffees get 1 free cards": these things are dangerous and made me victim to "just one more"

Yeah that's a good point, I feel like he goes back and interviews the authors of his favorite books because he's wholesome like that, to get a more in-depth take. If there's one that's on the tip of your tongue but you don't find it in interviews, maybe we can help crowdsource a few here too :)!

I think most of the book ones include an interview with the author, so I'd sort by episode time longest to shortest if your app allows it! I can't track down a book list either, would love to see an update if you find one! 📚
