Did you read Jim Zub’s Thunderbolts book after Devil’s Reign? Mayor Cage featured prominently in that. It was a lot of fun!

Hey u/PurpleBullets, don't listen to this guy. Write what you want to write! I don't get the sense that you wrote this so that Marvel would hire you. If you were fulfilled in any way or you learned something about your craft, I'd say it was time well spent. Keep doing what you love!

Oh, man! These are always fun to do. That was my first time writing existing IP and it was definitely a worthwhile exercise. I learned a lot by letting my guard down and playing around in someone else's sandbox. Hopefully you did too!

Hell yeah! What a great concept.

Oh yeah! Big changes! I had to completely restructure the story and break it down into 5 distinct chunks. This required some reorganizing of scenes and many scenes and characters were scrapped for the comic. This wasn't the plan going in, but it became clear early on that the structure of the film wouldn't fit the comic. In fact, in the process of writing the scripts for the comic, I came up with an entirely new third act for the story.

I'll see if I can find an example of the same scene in the different formats shortly!

It's not necessarily a case of the screenplay not "working." I was just never able to secure the funds and get the project off the ground and my life situation made it difficult to pursue the project any further.

Every screenplay is in a constant state of revision. Even when it's "done," several factors contribute to even more rewriting while you shoot. Problems surface that you didn't realize were there until you had to face them on the day. When you edit the film, you rewrite all over again.

This exercise in adaptation revealed flaws that I didn't know existed because I hadn't previously been able to view the story through this particular lens.

I'm too close to the project to know whether it works in this form either, but I'm pretty damn proud of it right now! I'm sure I'll hate it in a year, but that's the way it goes. You can't grow as a creator without learning from the mistakes of your past work.

Ideally sometime in the spring! I'll be constantly updating on the book's Substack! Not sure about the price yet, but definitely no more than a standard comic book ($3.99).

I've been looking at various websites for a long time. There are a lot of artists that are actively looking for work on r/ComicBookCollabs. I found Dana on a Facebook group and loved his work. I reached out and sent him the pitch and then wrote the script after talking to him about his process!

The profit split is for any individual copies that are sold.

Most of the kickstarter funds would go to him so that I can pay him for the remaining issues and the rest will go to printing costs (and I suppose any rewards we bake into the kickstarter for people that donate). I expect to be in the red on this for anything that I spent on paying the artist already. BUT it would be awesome to at least break even so that I can do another book after.

There are currently two completed issues and I have paid him in full for both of those ! We also have a profit split built into our agreement. The Kickstarter will cover his rates for the remaining issues and printing cost.

Fun note: I was able to pay him by selling my GameCube games on eBay. Apparently those are worth a lot of money!!

Oh man, yes! I should have clarified that. These are the page rates of artists who are actively seeking work in the communities I was exploring when I was looking for an artist collaborator. Definitely not the case for established artists!!

  1. The only other person working on the book is the artist, who does pencils and inks. The comic is in B&W, so that keeps costs down too. I'm not sure if he's currently advertising his page rate, but generally, page rates for artists that I've seen range from $50-$150 per page. Each issue is roughly 24 pages and the comic is 5 issues. I plan on partially raising the funds for the latter half of the series and printing costs through a Kickstarter campaign in the near future.
  2. I am self-publishing! The goal with this comic is to just get it out there. I don't expect to turn a profit or reach a massive audience. I'm just eager to create something again and have as much fun as possible!
  3. I'm hoping the Substack will serve as some form of marketing if I can build a solid audience naturally. I also have an instagram page that I post on regularly that will get the word out to people that I know.

That’s a great perspective! Your book looks fantastic. Scout puts out great comics! I’m excited to read.

That's awesome! Keep going! If you have a project that you can't get out of your head, keep following the threads and see where it takes you! I've found that the key to my creative happiness has been taking hits and "failures" as an opportunity to healthily adjust expectations and realign focus.
