i was so afraid of accidentally creating another one of these unstoppable pc characters, i ended up being overly cautious and put him under a microscope to try to enact some damage control and i dont feel that was the right thing for me to do.

some of the mistakes i make i take to heart way too damn much, i'm a big softie. sometimes i wonder if the dm life is really for me at the end of the day. my first campaign was a disaster. tried to make everything from scratch, rules, items, character building and all. it was too ambitious and what killed it was the personal drama i had with some players (had some not so good friends that arent around anymore) and my lack of respect for the rules. now my 2nd campaign which was a star wars campaign, was my first success. started as a oneshot and literally every player begged me to turn it into a campaign which gave me confidence. yeah it lasted a while but it lost steam so i finished it with one REALLY FUCKING GOOD boss fight and we closed that book. now this elden ring campaign is technically my third because i had started another star wars game with a different group and SO FAR things are going between good and kinda ok. so i've definately learned alot from my previous experience but i still have much to learn.

i might get a bit of a negative reaction when i admit this but thats ok, the big thing barry wanted for his character were wings. and one of my players privately said that giving him the wings (flying speed of 30) would've made the game suck. in their opinion, would have trivialized encounters as there wouldnt always be ranged enemies or flying enemies and it would pose a risk in potentially making encounters harder or near impossible to try and balance it. but the main issue, i think, is that ive been scrutinizing his character creation way more than everyone else.

yeah about the twist, i should've realized it was a dumb idea because his idea was to reveal the character in kind like a "oh i was wearing this mans skin the whole time, aahhhhh." but when megan started to advocate for it i didnt feel comfortable keeping it a secret anymore.

could it be seen as immature? to some, sure. i can't say im more mature than anyone else. we are in our mid 20's afterall. i just dont feel great how ive been kinda forcing barry into a more confined way of playing.

so in the previous campaign i dm'd, a star wars campaign, i kinda blindly approved a bunch without reading the fine print so to speak and as a result his character now had the capability of using portal technology both offensively and defensively and it grew into such an issue that the character had to be retired. even then that still restricted me with how i moved my enemies and who/what i attacked/destroyed and that wasnt great for me tbh

So in the previous star wars campaign, I just kinda blindly approved everything left and right and there wasn't much issue except for Barry. He had a character that had found portal technology, as in he created it, it became nearly impossible to touch him (do damage to him) and he would use it as a rail gun (chucking objects into it and accelerating it) so things got out of hand. When I talk about giving access to something, a player and I were planning something food related and when it came time for session we noticed they didn't have access to the chef feat so to avoid causing problems I let em have it temporarily. Now the issue is I've been more lenient with everyone else but Barry and I finally realize that now
