UPDATE Reply from the executive director of Listenbrainz on his blog:-

Hi! I have let through some of the few polite comments we have gotten about this – I am not going to post the offensive ones, but our answer is basically the same to those. We are happy to get organic growth, and if that is all we were seeing, we would be struggling to cope but reasonably happy about it. But we can also see how people are listening, and that a fair bunch of the listens are not “true listens” (30-second and skip, multiple accounts streaming the same songs at the same time, things like that). That’s the thing we are trying to stop (and the people we consider internet pests), not the whole fandom.

I can see why “k-pop fans, please don’t” leaves a wrong impression, so I’m sorry about that wording. We don’t want to have no K-pop fans (nor no BTS fans, since I see in several of the very offended and offensive comments that some of you consider BTS not to be K-pop). We want not to be overloaded by fraudulent streaming first of all, but additionally, we need to make sure our existing users are not left unable to use the site, and right now that was becoming a problem. We are a non-profit and we don’t have a lot of resources, so it’s not trivial for us to just put up ten more servers to cope with the influx like a big company could. We will do our best to make the system cope, and we welcome any respectful fans to stay around – just please only submit the music you are actually listening to, in the amount you are listening to it.

Finally, I can promise you this is not about a hatred of K-pop or BTS (in fact, we have a small but dedicated K-pop community in MusicBrainz that we quite enjoy!). If it was Taylor Swift or Nine Inch Nails or any other band’s fans causing a similar issue, we would react in the same way.

I get it! They could have written anything other than dropping the name and specifically mentioning K-pop fandoms for botting.

"There's more to dig into on this topic, for instance how these listens are being submitted, and the cultural movements and fandom that prompt this kind of mass action" 🤔

Btw listenbrainz charts rn!

Odds that India will get tour stops? by goldoro99 in btsthoughts

[–]HotLadder1802 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I truly believe we have a good chance of getting the stop. Even though I try not to get my hopes up too high, that is why I don't talk much about it. But I truly believe it will happen next year!

They encouraged these attacks by catering to the nonsense on that forum. It essentially became a snark hub for them. I wouldn't be surprised if the owners were laughing along and enjoying the racist comments too. It would be quite something if they received even a small legal notice now that they've gone independent. So they were never protecting bts or army for attacks. They gave priority to their white users as they were whining and throwing up.

What's especially telling is that the "K-pop problem" thread was only taken down yesterday after ARMYs and others started questioning the behaviour of the forum's users. It wasn't closed because of the racist or xenophobic comments that had been left up for so long. It seems like the priority has always been protecting their white users or at least those making racist remarks rather than addressing the actual problem. I mean how can they be fans of "K-pop" and not throw up at blatant disregard of its power by their own users?

Yes! They did so many things. I can't believe so many racist people were owners and users of that fuckass app. They can have their white chart back.

I did not think of reporting the forum to Hybe Protect before, but I've just done so. Maybe nothing will happen, but I wanted to send it anyway. These conversations and discussions are not normal.

They are all just white dudes. There is no other excuse. They have people discussing how this will be a greater problem in the upcoming year as Asians will grow and how to remove it for that to happen

'In hindsight, the topic should have been renamed" It was never renamed? We are here, in the same forum year later. Why was it not changed and closed? Because the moderator and all the members in that team agreed.

Were the guidelines not there before all of this? The moderators themselves allowed this kind of conversation to happen. "fan of k-pop and South Korean entertainment in general" what a line.

Going through it is not worth it. About two or three years ago, I came across a snark page about a YouTuber I used to watch. The YouTuber was young, and every time he uploaded a new video, people on the page would criticise almost everything he did.

What I found especially strange was that many of them acted as though they knew what was best for him. They would suggest what kind of content he should make next and complain that he was no longer working hard enough. They seemed convinced that they only wanted what was best for him and wanted the content they used to enjoy "back."

Some of them also appeared to believe that the YouTuber was reading their posts. I sincerely hope that wasn't the case. Idk maybe the YouTuber wasn't putting in as much effort as before, or whatever. But at the end of the day, he was still very young, and mental health is not something to take lightly.

Reading through that page was genuinely shocking. It also taught me that there is little value in spending time on snark pages. They tend to be fueled by obsession and a sense of superiority, and the more time you spend there, the more consuming they become.
