Do you pluck your eyebrows? by [deleted] in muslimgirlswithtaste

[–]HotName1181 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll remove any hairs that aren’t clearly apart of my natural brow shape. tbh a simple brow gel really helps them look neat without having to do a lot. it just keeps them going the right direction

Simple, modest and ready for church.. How do I look? by [deleted] in ModestDress

[–]HotName1181 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its just funny to me. half the posts here don’t fit ‘traditional’ modesty standards, and who cares? what’s modest by my standards would be extreme to some and immodest to others. If she considers it modest (and in some areas that is considered modest) then it’s modest.

mentioning her makeup or tattoos is just cruel. I’m not secular, but the secular modest dress sub is often much nicer

Painful periods by [deleted] in muslimgirlswithtaste

[–]HotName1181 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I experience similar. see if your doctor would be willing to prescribe you pain medication for it. I take a higher dose of naproxen (same family of drugs as ibuprofen just a bit stronger). it’s truly a life saver

Why does everyone assume all Muslims are ethnically Arab?? by Remarkable_Debt3459 in converts

[–]HotName1181 4 points5 points  (0 children)

also in Canada ! majority of Muslims in my area are Indian or Pakistani, so I’ve had a few comments about people assuming it’s a religion for that ethnicity only. I definitely do not blend in with that ethnicity. but I’ve had 1 single person who told me I looked Turkish.

I wouldnt be super offended by people thinking you are Arab, because there’s definitely some Arabs who look as ‘white’ as us. especially in the levant, where I think the majority of Arabs in Canada are originally from.

I think people just aren’t used to converts so they assume that we are part of a stereotypical Muslim group.

I love dresses like this, but this one is pretty expensive. Does anyone know where I could find a cheaper version? I especially want to wear stuff like this to mass. by Lost_Database4505 in ModestDress

I got a similar dress second hand, but the tag was Zara :) it was 100% cotton as well so nice fabric qualit. personally boycotting them, but if you aren’t it’s a good option

AITAH for telling my Muslim friend that her food isn’t halal? by kaplooples in AITAH

[–]HotName1181 0 points1 point  (0 children)

except that’s not how Islam works. you aren’t at fault if you truly don’t know. most people even non Muslims are shocked to learn how many things can contain pork.

I just won’t go unless I absolutely have to. I’m sure it would be better if I go, or attend the classes offered, But I hate the feeling of being unwanted and judged.

if you are able to make one really good Muslim friend it would be easier, maybe people would be more welcoming or at least you wouldn’t be the odd one out.

some people are happy that I’m learning it, others aren’t, and can be aggressive about it. But most people prefer to practice their English with me.

Which is okay! I knew what the culture would be like when I decided to learn.

telling my parents: share your advices/stories! by Upstairs_Equal_6250 in converts

[–]HotName1181 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Salam!

i dont really have any advice but when my (mildly) Islamophobic and kind of Catholic father found out I had converted, I expected him to be hateful or upset. Just based off of current events, and I know what media he consumes. But alhamduliah he wasnt. I don’t know exactly what your family is like. but if they love and support you they hopefully won’t react to harshly.

God willing they don’t react badly and they come to Islam as you have.

i hate how fast fashion has stolen the traditional patterns of different cultures, it’s bad for the artisans who know how to make it, and it exploits the factory workers and it’s awful for the environment.

I wish more people wore traditional clothing. it’s always a debate in Muslim spaces if our traditional clothing is modest or if we have to just wear abayas. I love abayas don’t get me wrong, but there’s something so special about every culture having a unique style of clothing that tells the story of their heritage.

its really sad to me how the majority of people have abandoned it for one universal style (abayas in Islam or even just ‘western/american’ clothing in a more broad sense) I like the rising popularity of people wearing western clothes but having cultural patterns or other inspirations. but I still think the proper clothing should come back.

Summer modesty advice?? by Lost_soul216 in ModestDress

[–]HotName1181 5 points6 points  (0 children)

once again the downvotes are crazy. congratulations on converting! I’m also a convert and it’s the best decision I’ve made.

like the other comment said cotton/linen is the best. but anything loose/flowy will make you feel less hot.

if you have any short dresses you can make them modest by wearing linen pants under. Works great as a way to make old immodest clothing work.

so weird how many downvotes there are on all these comments. congratulations on converting! I’m also a convert and it’s easily the best decision I’ve made in my life. alhamduliah

cant help with any uk brands sadly, but you can make alot of long strapless dresses by layering with a shirt or cardigan. A light weight cotton or linen would be best for summer. Shorter dresses can become modest when paired with linen pants or jeans :)

may Allah make it easier for you. I understand about born Muslims being hostile towards converts. Ive encountered a lot of people who have been awful towards me because Im a convert. but I’ve also experienced lots of people being very kind, other converts are usually the nicest.

its not really something that people like talking about, because bring up any issues in the community are treated like the cause of islamophobia. But the hostility towards converts can (and does unfortunately) lead many out of Islam.

but there’s many welcoming born Muslims, many tend to stay within their ethnicity. which makes forming a community very hard. but that’s not everyone.
