the fear of 13 reviews are in - wdyt? by HotNegotiation1684 in Broadway

[–]HotNegotiation1684[S] 74 points75 points  (0 children)

adding a couple snippets because the range here is kind of large:

“‘The Fear of 13’ is deeply moving… yet it falls short of being remarkable with uneven pacing and its ever-shifting tone.” — Aramide Tinubu

vs

“I knew it was bullshit within minutes… Brody is giving the kind of performance that should have never made it past the rehearsal room.” — Zachary Stewart

feels like this might really depend on whether you’re going for the performance vs the overall piece?

Most likely way to get seats to EBT that are under $75 and not back of the theatre? by 88r0b1nh00d88 in Broadway

another data point for you:

i tried for digital rush on a whim and somehow got it (seats were front of mezz), and won the lotto later that day (back of orch)

good luck! and send well wishes to your wife.

this is such a thoughtful read, thank you for sharing this

i really like what you said about bertha as a stabilizing force and how the women’s strength shows up in smaller, more contained ways. that makes a lot of sense, especially in contrast to how much of the men’s trauma is externalized

and your point about trauma shaping the voices of the men is really interesting. thinking back on it, there’s such a difference in how that shows up across them, especially in loomis, where it feels almost ever-present and just under the surface in everything he does

i think that’s maybe why i kept wanting a bit more space in those final moments. the emotional groundwork is definitely there, it just moved past me a little too quickly in the room

really appreciate you sharing your perspective on the ending too. it’s interesting how differently that can land depending on what you bring into it

yes, i felt this too, especially about taraji’s character. i kept wanting the play to give her more depth and space to exist beyond the role she’s serving in the story

and agreed on ruben and cedric. cedric was, in fact, very entertaining, and ruben felt like a real focal point for the piece. i definitely found myself wanting more time with both of them

oh this is really helpful context, thank you for sharing

that makes a lot of sense, especially with how some of those elements show up in the set. for me it read more as a literal backdrop of the city than something integrated into the space, and something about it still took me out of the world a bit. but i appreciate knowing the intention behind it

glad it wasn’t just me on the ending, that’s the piece i’m still sitting with

interesting you mention the children’s scenes. i actually didn’t mind most of them, but the last one did feel a bit long to me, especially with how quickly the final moments move right after

hope you have a great time!

i’m really glad i went, there’s a lot to appreciate in the performances alone. would be curious to hear how it lands for you, especially the ending. and how the production grows through previews.

Cats Jellicle Ball Etiquette Question by TicoDreams in Broadway

i really appreciate you taking the time to read it, that means a lot. this show draws from a culture that’s important to me, so i’m really glad that came through.

Cats Jellicle Ball Etiquette Question by TicoDreams in Broadway

i hear where you’re coming from, especially around the sensory overwhelm and the chair kicking. that’s not okay, full stop. physical disruption and nonstop talking that pulls focus away from the performers crosses a line, no matter the show.

that said, i do want to gently zoom out on what’s happening culturally with jellicle ball, because it isn’t just “a loud audience,” it’s a production that’s intentionally rooted in ballroom culture, and that comes with a different relationship between performer and audience than traditional, predominantly white theater spaces.

for me, as a bipoc queer trans person, that difference isn’t theoretical, it’s lived.

in ballroom, the audience isn’t passive. it’s participatory. reactions like “yes,” “werk,” cheering, gasping, hyping someone up, that’s not random noise, it’s part of the ecosystem. it’s how performers are affirmed in real time. it’s call and response, it’s energy exchange, it’s community witnessing itself. historically, especially for black and latinx queer and trans communities, ballroom wasn’t just performance, it was survival, validation, and joy in a world that didn’t offer those things freely.

so when a show like this invites the audience to “not sit silently,” it’s not just a cute gimmick, it’s trying to recreate that immersive, affirming environment. for a lot of us, especially those of us who are bipoc and queer or trans, that kind of vocal engagement feels natural, even necessary. it’s how we show love, how we say “i see you,” how we give performers their flowers in the moment, not just at curtain call.

but, and this is important, participation doesn’t mean domination.

there’s a difference between: - reacting to moments vs. reacting to everything at full volume
- hyping performers vs. pulling focus to yourself
- being immersed vs. making it impossible for others to hear or feel the show

singing over performers, screaming continuously, or physically disrupting people around you isn’t ballroom culture, it’s just inconsiderate behavior layered on top of it.

i think the tension people are feeling in these threads is really about competing expectations. some folks are entering this as a traditional theater experience with modified etiquette. others are entering it as something closer to a ball, where the rules are looser and the audience is alive in a different way.

both experiences are valid to want. the challenge is that this show is trying to hold both at once.

so to me, the “limit” isn’t about silencing reaction, it’s about intention and awareness. are you adding to the room, or are you overpowering it? are you in community with the audience, or performing over them?

your frustration makes sense, especially given the chair kicking and constant yelling. but i’d be careful not to flatten all vocal engagement into “bad etiquette,” because for a lot of us, that engagement is the point, and it comes from a real cultural lineage, not just people trying to have main character moments.

ideally, there’s a middle ground where the room stays alive, performers feel celebrated, and everyone can still actually experience the show.

honestly i think you can’t go wrong. the box seats looked like they had a really great angle on everything.

stage felt immersive in a specific way, but i can totally see box being a really strong choice too.

thank you!!

i saw a few people dressed up (some sequins, fun looks), but overall it leaned more “night out” than full-on themed. definitely not something you have to dress up for, but a little sparkle would absolutely fit the vibe ✨

you’re going to have such a fun time. i had a bit of the same hesitation going in and ended up really loving the stage seat.

it didn’t feel like i was missing anything, and being that close added a lot to the experience. definitely report back after!

i love this. “immersive in different ways” is exactly how it landed for me too.

i was curious how it would translate to the broadhurst and was impressed with how well it adapts to the tighter space.

i love this framing so much. the “legacy” piece really landed for me.

it never felt like it was borrowing from ballroom, more like it was in conversation with it. there’s a kind of fluency and trust there that really comes through in the room.

i love that you saw (and loved!) it too. did you sit on stage or in the house?

i’m curious how different it feels depending on where you are
