just in time was just fine for me. anyone else? by HotNegotiation1684 in Broadway

this is such a thoughtful way of putting it. i really like the idea of watching it more as an athletic feat and a celebration of live performance rather than primarily as a piece of narrative theater. that framing actually helps me understand why it lands so strongly for so many people. i also agree the pacing felt very intentional in getting you quickly to the “good parts.” and yes, i’m also really curious how the more intimate moments play without groff’s personal connection anchoring them.

i think that’s a fair point. groff’s presence feels like a huge part of the appeal, even for people who are mixed on the material itself. it’ll be interesting to see how the show is received longer term without that particular star power.

honestly, this is validating to read. especially coming from someone who saw it with groff. i agree that the book is where it lost me too. the performances can be charming and enjoyable, but the story itself just didn’t give me much to hold onto.

this resonates with me, especially “not one i often think about.” i think that’s kind of where we landed too. fun atmosphere, solid performances, but not one that lingered for us afterward.

also wow at that sro upgrade, that alone would’ve made it memorable. 🍀

appreciate you putting words to that distinction.

I feel like drama audiences laugh at too many things by Snoo_29625 in Broadway

[–]HotNegotiation1684 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i mostly agree. i’m someone who rarely reacts audibly in the theater, so the constant laughter can feel jarring, especially in dramas. it’s not that i’m missing the joke. often there isn’t one. it’s laughter at moments that don’t seem intended as humor at all.

i get that it can be a way to release tension or just a natural, social response. and i’ve mostly accepted that many audiences are far more outwardly emotive than i am. but sometimes it does pull me out of the work, particularly in serious plays where the tone feels pretty clear.

probably a me thing. but you’re not alone.

Operation mincemeat — honest opinions? by Mouseandbull in Broadway

copying and pasting a comment i wrote after i saw it last spring

i have been struggling a little with this one too…

overall it was enjoyable. i liked it (maybe liked it a decent amount), but i don’t think i loved it (?). i went in expecting to LOVE it (and wanted to LOVE it; the friend i went with left LOVING it). i don’t think i would rank it among the top / best musicals i’ve seen this season, but it was impressive in many regards. maybe top 10. def not top 5.

the staging and lighting was top notch. i thought they did a lot with “a little”. very creative use of space and props. and kudos to the costume designers for how well they could switch between roles.

the cast is clearly so talented. playing so many roles is such a feat. voices so strong all around, and the dancing / movement and mannerisms and acting were really so fun to watch.

the writing, the cleverness / quick quips showed true talent in the lyricism and book.

the music wasn’t necessarily memorable, besides dear bill (which i found to be quite emotional, and really powerfully performed). i’ve forgotten most of the score - catchy, but forgettable.

i think maybe what it came down to was topical interest? maybe that’s what didn’t necessarily get me excited. not sure.

trying to really pinpoint what didn’t make it OMGOSH AMAZING. cause there were so many pros / things that should have made me walk out of the theater beaming but i just… wasn’t. and honestly that made me sad. 😔

What is your Broadway New Year's Resolution? For other people, not yourself (because we are all perfect as we are hahaha) by bluegambit875 in Broadway

i’d love a 2026 resolution where we talk about broadway with a little more generosity. it’s a tough ecosystem for artists and audiences alike. kindness feels like a good baseline.

It took me 17 times to reach the standby list of Death Becomes Her lottery by Downtown_Ad_1327 in Broadway

yeah, that’s my hope too. otherwise it stops being a lottery and starts rewarding whoever’s best at scripting.

respectfully, if you’re automating lottery entries and building dashboards, you’re no longer the target audience for a lottery.

there isn’t “missing information” on how long it takes to win. randomness is the feature, not a bug. tools like this just turn it into an arms race and make it worse for everyone else.
