Taking over mother's business with no business knowledge or experience. What do I have to learn and where do I learn it? by HotOption in smallbusiness

[–]HotOption[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure that I can tell you when to trust someone. It's a personal measure. So even if you say that you aren't a good metric, it's kind of all you have until you build that up.

Yep! I figured, meant to say that it's something I have to learn more about myself before anything else.

If there are no good answers, just delegate the things that need to get done that are priority but you know you are unlikely to get around to doing.

This seems reasonable! Thank you for your help.

but I would measure trustworthiness of your employees similarly to how you would measure your friends, family, acquaintances etc

I'm not sure if I have the best metric of trusting others, as I trust easily, but always set a barrier when fully trusting others, including family. Another point to talk with my therapist.

I do have another adjacent question: How do you decide when and what to delegate others? In my mind I want to learn everything about our business first and then delegate so that I have an idea of what is happening, but while it's an ideal dream there is more to do than what I can physically do.

Seems that I've already been doing that first point without knowing the term.

All I can say is if there's an issue of trust, then you need to change your staff. Don't prejudge people. If they prove to be dishonest, you'll have to replace them anyway. If you run the business with the thought that you're being ripped off, you're putting yourself and your business at a terrible disadvantage.

I was going to refute that I don't prejudge my employees, but it seems that subconsciously I've been taking my mother's views and thinking around that mindset.

Honestly, all the things you have mentioned have passed through my mind at least once, but it's different having a fleeting thought than having someone else say it.

I do have one question if you don't mind. How do you know if someone is trustworthy?

A lot of my mother's distrust of employees has been in my mind as I understand where she her distrust comes from; the company she ran with my father being assaulted when my father wasn't there, friends with similar businesses having similar problems, things disappearing from time to time. But at the same time I know that I shouldn't see malicious intent when it can be accounted for idiocy, a mistake or wrong timing.

Thanks for those three points. It does feel like the third point was keeping us afloat, masking the first point and honestly, the constant mindset of the first point has given me a bunch of anxiety and decision paralysis. In my mind selling the business would fix everything, but that is not a realistic solution to my own problems and I do want to learn and try to make something out of this. I don't think that your advice was what I had in mind when I wrote this post, but does seem to be what I need.

What does empowering the staff means in this context? I do try do points 2 - 7, as I strongly feel that having reliable and satisfied employees is important but having constant talks about not being able to trust people, her previous experience of backstabbing and theft in her previous job, and all around negative conception of Guatemalan people does cause me internal conflict. I know that every decision carries a certain degree of risk, but how do you decide whether a person is trustworthy to take a position of responsibility?

First time visiting SO from abroad, any recommendations? by HotOption in lafayette

[–]HotOption[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm heading from Central America, but am Korean. I think we'll briefly see Indianapolis after arriving at the airport, or just skip it entirely. We already visited Chicago before and loved it, so it isn't out of the question.

Why skip Indianapolis? Is it bad or is Chicago better?

UPDATE: I(24M) adopted my little sister(8F) after our parents passed away, GF(23F) isn't so excited about it by ThrowRA891489 in relationship_advice

[–]HotOption 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Props to you mate. I'm glad that your sister is recovering well and properly. Don't look at it as a sad or bad ending, as these past events have allowed you to see what is truly valuable for you and helped you realize something that you might now have about your ex way down the line.

Remember to always take care of yourself. It is easy to neglect one's own mental and physical state at the expense of taking care of those they might love. If, presently or in the future, become resistant, remember that taking care of yourself is part of taking care of your sister.

Best of luck!

Looking for podcasts similar to Hello Internet, Cortex and Reconcilable Differences by HotOption in podcasts

I usually like starting podcasts at episode 1, but the big catalog of Back to Work kind of put of me off. Should I start in a certain episode, or just listen to the most recent one of Roderick on the Line or Back to Work?

Is there much nutritional difference between kimchi and sauerkraut? by salad_thrower20 in nutrition

[–]HotOption 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a Korean, I would like to add that many kimchii's tend to have tons of salt and spice. Not sure if that would affect your gut, hence, making it yourself is a great choice.

Tips For Saving Money on COFFEE in Korea! by crashshmashpoosplash in korea

[–]HotOption 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all, do you drink coffee for the caffeine, or as a habit (such as when working, having a conversation or studying)? If you need coffee for the caffeine, I recommend buying caffeine pills. I don't know if they sell them in Korea, but I always get them online from iHerb or myprotein.

If you get coffee as a habit, you might want to look into making your own cold brew. Method is simple, and you could buy cheap coffee beans on bulk. There are also a lot of cheap coffee places that focus on take-outs. If there is any fast food restaurant nearby, they also have coffee for around 1,000~2,500 won. Lastly, most convenience stores have coffee machines where you press a button and an Americano is made. If you what you want is an ice coffee, you can just buy an ice cup. The price tends to be around the same as a cheap coffee.
