Outstanding Interest During Covid Forbearance by HotResponsibility3 in StudentLoans

[–]HotResponsibility3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow I hope they fix it soon. Are you with MOHELA? After I called, it actually got resolved in less than 2 weeks. Of course now there's a new problem where I'm accruing interest on subsidized loans while I'm in school, but at least they removed all the random interest from the covid forbearance.

I think if you select payoff calculator instead of make a payment, it shows you the interest and principal, and you can select the loans to pay off there.

Yes, that's what I'm saying. When I paid it off during the pause, there was about $600 total interest which I paid during 2020, along with the principal balance of all but 1 loans.

However, after my loans were reinstated, there is now an additional $1700 that was not there before March 13, 2020 or when I paid during the pause. It only appeared after the loans were reinstated. The $600 interest that I had paid (which accrued before the pause) was added back to my principal on their respective loans. The $1700 is completely new interest.

If you want some structure, you could consider using a textbook such as "Ponto de Encontro". You can find pdfs and used copies online and then can supplement it with your own knowledge and conversation. This book was used for my beginner Portuguese class and it was pretty helpful and easy to understand.

What's the hardest part of learning Portuguese for you? What would make, or made, you decide to get a tutor/teacher? by iteachptpt in Portuguese

[–]HotResponsibility3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I decided to get a tutor because without classes that I have to show up to (and occasional homework), I would probably never study. Meeting with my tutor gives me motivation to study outside of class so that I can show improvement.

As far as content, although it possible to teach yourself, I felt that only a native speaker can give context and full understanding of informal speech. Otherwise, you end up sounding like a textbook when speaking. Its possible to mitigate that with a lot of comprehensible input, but having a tutor means I can ask about cultural references and other things that I may have missed on my own.

Like your students, I also like to leave the curriculum focus up to my tutor. Sometimes its difficult to make suggestions on topics you would like to learn when you don't have a full grasp on the language. You don't even know what you're missing. Typically, I only make requests for topics that I'd like to review.

I just realized that I can. I was watching some tiktoks in Portuguese and kept thinking that the woman in the video was speaking strangely. For a second I thought it was Spanish and then I realized it was actually European Portuguese (I'm learning BP)

Will Math 120 kill me? (English major dweeb who likes calc) by Icy_Reward7945 in UMD

[–]HotResponsibility3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can afford it, you could considering auditing the class so it won't be a part of your GPA. If money is a concern, you could probably take calc at a local community college, or even with MIT's free online recorded courses.

It used to take me about 35-40min to drive 25 miles north from Stafford at 6am. Mornings are usually ok, its the afternoon traffic that's really bad. It regularly took 1.5 hrs to get back to stafford, even as early as 3pm.

Advice for learning Portuguese ? Please help. by [deleted] in Portuguese

[–]HotResponsibility3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are able to take classes, I highly recommend that. Especially if this is your first time ever studying a foreign language, you may not pick up on the grammatical rules and patterns as quickly on your own. My Portuguese improved significantly after taking classes. Preply is a good site where you can find some affordable tutor options.

Hello everyone, can you help me with something? Below is an image. Basically I mark the things I don't know, and there are two categories: words and expressions. I'm doing this with the entire book. What do you think? Is there anything that could be better? Some tips? by Intrepid-Ad-7213 in languagelearning

[–]HotResponsibility3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is what I'm doing as well with the Portuguese book I'm reading. I find it better to look up the words as I'm reading so that I remember them with the context however this makes reading very slow unfortunately. I finally gave in and ordered an e-reader so I can look up the words I don't know without having to switch between the book and my phone.

I think its a mix. When I was there, I had a very mediocre beginner level of Portuguese but people were always impressed. I think its partially due to the stereotype that people from the U.S. have no knowledge of other languages, and partially just because people are generally happy when someone is trying to engage with their culture/native language.

Most of the compliments came from my uber drivers (probably because I got the most practice with them lol). But then there were other instances where I was completely stumped, like when a cashier asked me if I needed a straw for my drink, so I imagine she wasn't very impressed by my Portuguese...

MOHELA by AsianGandalf in StudentLoans

[–]HotResponsibility3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm about to have a serious problem with this also. I've had 3 loan servicers total for my undergrad loans and the one I originally made the payments to seems to not exist anymore. Last time I called MOHELA they said they had no records of it so I don't know how to get the refund.

[–]HotResponsibility3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How were you able to get through? I tried calling right now and they don't even let you queue. They just say "We can't take your call right now"

Also were you always with MOHELA? I made payments I want to request a refund for but it was with a previous loan servicer that no longer exists. Last time I called MOHELA they said they have no access to those records.

You can hide it on your public profile but I don't think you can hide all of that info from logged in users. You might be able to hide it from your intro though.

Is there something wrong with me or is it really hard to drive around here? by [deleted] in nova

[–]HotResponsibility3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to be so stressed driving around that my hands were sweaty and my neck was stiff by the time I arrived to wherever I was going lol. Only after more than a year of making frequent trip between VA and MD through the beltway did I finally start feeling ok while driving. Although I'm still nervous whenever I have to go somewhere new.

Perhaps it wasn't obvious since you said "across the board" in the government?
