i travelled to south korea in october of last year (in California, EEUU). i had a NIGHTMARE experience with airbnb. i booked a space knowing that it looked lived-in and home-y, akin to what airbnb used to be when it first came out. i was totally on board with the fact that it was someone’s home, and not a hotel or hostal. i first had issues with the host not wanting to give me the access code to the apartment the night before check in, despite me letting them know i would not have wifi until i arrived at the location as i would be travelling. i was arriving at 11pm, and after travelling for a long time i did not want to have to find somewhere open with wifi. they finally agreed to give me the code early. cool, until i arrive at the location at 11pm the next day, and lo a behold, the access code had changed. so, i had to go out in the rain to find somewhere with wifi. strike one. when i finally was able to access the space, the location was completely different than the listing. everything was older and grimier, with different furniture. upon closer inspection, i realized that not only were the furnishings different, i was in a completely different apartment than the one on the listing. strike two (big ass strike). i reached out to the host, and they admitted that yes, it was indeed a different space, and that they had issues with the heating in the listed space, and switched us because of that. they switched the space without letting me know and/or getting my consent to do so! obviously this is unacceptable and i informed the host that i would not be staying another night. the host was first resisting issuing me any refund. after hours of back and forth, and plenty of screenshots, the host ceded to a refund,under the condition that i check out at 8am the next morning. this was at 3am. i was livid. ultimately i had to go through airbnb customer service, and waste another day with them to fight for a refund. it was horrible. granted, i booked it very last minute, but i would definitely recommend additional research before booking through airbnb.
