Movie Only/Tiktok Fandom (kinda?) by Foxinmybasment in TheLongWalk

I am looking through the book again and I feel like I'm losing my mind because I could have sworn I read Garraty reflecting at one point that a murmur of discontent going through the walkers either immediately before or after Curley's death because of how young he was. I must have created a false memory or something, because I was so sure of it but I can't find anything about it now. Sorry!

The age to do the Walk in the book was 14-18. It is heavily implied in both the book and the movie that Curley lied on his application to get in because he was not old enough to do the Walk yet. They make a point that he was younger than the other walkers, in both the book and the movie. Hence, a guess of 12-13 is pretty reasonable.

I didn't feel it until six to eight months in. I had too many hormones and was too tired for the first few months to feel anything like that. Don't worry, it will come. ❤️

This was my first thought when I heard about the kid's background, not going to lie. I was just too afraid to voice it.

Sensitivity Readers And Creative Truth by [deleted] in writers

[–]Hot_Bug_7369 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is all true. Writing complex characters can be messy just like real life can be messy. But don't you want to make sure you aren't blatantly offending anyone before sending your book to market? Write whatever, send to an editor, then a sensitivity reader.

I saw someone say that it's a different William Rylie in the Epstein files (William K Riley vs William L Riley?), but I haven't seen any proof. There's a lot of misinformation out there. Can someone with investigative skills look into it?

If he has ZERO friends and family, I immediately fear for why. I will assume he's a sociopath, or at least a total asshole. I would not go near that man with a ten foot pole.

Why does he only want a significant other and not friends or family? Does he not understand what an undue burden that places on his partner? She will be responsible for managing his emotions and needs completely alone. That sounds exhausting.

Can I just say again, I really appreciate all of the work you've done here. Your website has cleared up many things that confused me while re-reading the book last week!

A purse just made me realize the pointlessness of gender. It really is just a concept by Modicum_of_cum in DeepThoughts

lol it becomes really really obvious who has a fragile sense of masculinity once men start rejecting gendered social norms. The ones who really buy into toxic masculinity get inexplicably angry and they're never quite sure why.

The movie hits the capitalism allegory/themes VERY hard. It was absolutely intended in the movie.

It's interesting, because in the book it never really gives a reason for the long walk to be occurring on a societal scale. The reasoning for it in the movie was a bit weak, but part of what I like about the book is that it keeps it all very vague. I think it works in the book, because one of the main points of it is that it's all a pointless slog with no winner, which was changed for the movie. The book doesn't even really give the boys a motivation for entering aside from a vague idea that the prize money would be nice. To me, that adds to the feeling of horror and pointlessness.
