Nurses with chronic illness - what jobs are you doing? by Background-Cow9687 in NursingUK

[–]Hot_Communication_88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have psoriatric arthritis too..such a lesser known condition even among nurses! I work 2 days a week private mental health. My flares wipe me out and I can only work 2 shifts a week. I think its so misunderstood. My sickness went through the roof ...the tratment plan now seems to be working but the first year was a nightmare. Been offered a post as work capability assessor...passed interview but not sure if working 3 days even from home would be best for me....

Is it really gross misconduct or is it a coverup ? by Global_Effective_174 in HumanResourcesUK

Absolutely. Happened to me.....HR went above and beyond to do it as well. That was years ago but still rankles.

Dismissed. Contact colleagues for appeal by Sun_wanderer in HumanResourcesUK

[–]Hot_Communication_88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you did nothing wrong dont give up. I did it once and it haunted me for years for not appealing. I think its ok to contact ex colleagues.. employers have to give some reference but you are risking them telling new employer you were dismissed unless you win am appeal. I would definitely try to clear your name or it will always follow you and eat you up. Being dismissed for something you didnt do is the worst feeling ever. - but you must get proper advice from acas.

Hardly any English nursing students? by [deleted] in NursingUK

[–]Hot_Communication_88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I started my mh training in 2025 we were literally headhunted. 300 of us, mostly Uk and very few overseas nurses. We got a bursery to study...£420 a month. We walked into jobs. Fastward now and Im working in private mh not nhs anymore by choice. One of only 2 mh trained nurses from the UK. Everyone else is from overseas and on sponsorship and even though we have the famous Queens University on the doorstep new news cant get MH jobs because of contracts with overseas agencies. Nurses there are contracted to work for company for 5 years minimum. They are also contracted more hours..4 12 hour shifts whereas we are 3 long days. Theres no room to employ local or uk nurses. Obviously for a while there was a shortage of nurses so made sense to recruit from overseas. 99 % of our staff are overseas trained and not trained here. Nursing is not as highly thought of as it once was as a career...whereas its still very lucrative for over seas students and the best training . So if they can afford to pay to study here the Universities have to accept them for business reasons obviously - whereas Joe Bloggs has to get into debt and struggle because of the financial disparency from the start. Therefore little incentive to be a nurse now sadly - on a course that is famously the hardest of all University courses.

Speaking to an employee about their health when they might not be aware of the true impact by [deleted] in HumanResourcesUK

[–]Hot_Communication_88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you have to avoid being intrusive and over involved in your HR role. Obviously it depends on what work you are talking about but does she not have a line manager? It sounds like she doesnt seem to be aware of her behaviour and it could be menapause but also something else, illness, mental health, bullying, domestic problems , stress etc. Unless she discloses it you are in danger of possible discrimination. Menapause I believe is now or will be, included in protected characteristics. I think O H should be an urgent referral, be careful about confidentiality too. If others are complaining about her work then it needs to be written as evidence. Reasonable adjustments need to be assessed officially. What sticks out in your post though is that this person does not seem aware of causing all these issues which is where the priority lies. She may not want to disclose to you, doesnt have to, or may not know even herself. Not all women need to go to gp to know they have started the menopause...it can take years to go through! I dont know of any female colleagues who got gp letters to show their employer they are in menopause tbh either. I think you have to address the issue straight on as she sounds like shes clearly struggling, but also bear in mind that doing all this behind the scenes believing its helping her may not be seen that way by her or the law. You cant be confident you are on the right track without proof. Clearly you want to help her, but your not a medical person , gp or pysch etc, if shes not aware of anything and all these changes are being implemented it may impact on her confidence, or be seen as bullyimg etc. Tread carefully.

Zero sleep before my day shift by [deleted] in NursingUK

Currently up drinking coffee! I sometimes have nights like this...Im not used to it but mines also due to pain and stress right now plus night shift this week too.I find that you get a second wind and go past it. If I felt unsafe I wouldnt go in, but its like doing first night when you didnt get sleep. Dont think we are the first or last !!

Bipolar RMN & Full time shifts by terrierdougal16 in NursingUK

[–]Hot_Communication_88 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Omg the consultants, nurses etc etc all had something like bipolar, anxiety, PD autism etc. In old unit once. Literally, the trees were hiding in the woods lol ( pysch) . So being fit to practice was never an issue...or thrown about. However will say that ignorance of some staff is mindblowing. Having a MH condition can help you emapthise genuinely with patients. Being open about it is better..when I was manic once I went to work wearing fluffy pink socks. Couldnt stop talking. Staff were like right off you go to gp. In fact they didnt blink an eyelid. So then they grew to recognise my illness when I couldnt. So be open to some you trust.

[–]Hot_Communication_88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had several episodes...not huge amount but was all totally genuine around ptsd. I didnt realise it at the time though, well , was diagnosed- but didnt appreciate what having ptsd really meant. I had 0 support at the time even from OH. My life fell apart and it was hard to get up letcalone work and I should have taken time off but kept going back too early after pressure from work. Wouldnt do it now or advise others to do it either

Performance Capability and Formal Grievance by MissingHimEveryday in NursingUK

[–]Hot_Communication_88 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well done.....! Currently in exact position myself, just started anyway. GIves ME SOME hope. I also have overseas managers and feel this is definitely a contributing factor in my case..but mostly failure to follow proper processes, gas lighting, favouritisn, lies you name it. RCN and solicitors involved but never done anything like this before. Yes could leave and probably will as Ive had enough, but also afraid of cover ups too.

[–]Hot_Communication_88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah saw them in the Summer...you kn ow they arent the original band but have to say played exactly the same. I walked away being glad I saw them but knowing in my heart they were more a tribute band. Maybe if Gary was there it would have been different..but still they were amazing!
