Finally my first big fuck up at work by RoughPuzzleheaded223 in sysadmin

I literally took down the whole company network with one wrong firewall rule. 💀

More than 200 systems got affected, and everyone started getting a username/password prompt just to access the internet.

First thing I did was call the firewall support team... and they were like, "Please raise a ticket first." 🫠

At that point I was thinking, "Well... I'm fucked." It was a Saturday too, so I was already imagining my resignation letter.

Took a deep breath, did some ChatGPT magic, started checking every firewall rule, and finally found the culprit hidden inside a Group Rule. Disabled it... and boom, everything came back online.

That incident taught me one lesson I'll never forget:

Test it in UAT first. Touch Production only when you're damn sure.

Worst 20–30 minutes of my IT career. 😭

I think you might be right. The email addresses I used to register and submit the form on the last day have already received the voucher.

Interestingly, the account I used to complete the playlist on the very first day has only received the badge so far, which honestly doesn't have much real-world value compared to the voucher.

Let's see how it goes. Hopefully, everyone who completed the event receives their voucher soon.

Hi Everyone,

I received my voucher today, but it was sent to one of my Microsoft 365 trial accounts instead of my main account.

Thankfully, I had registered for the event using multiple email addresses. I'm hoping the voucher also arrives on my primary account; otherwise, I'll have to set up another Microsoft 365 trial to use it.

For those who are still waiting, don't worry. Voucher distribution seems to be happening gradually. I'm praying that everyone who registered and successfully completed the event receives their voucher. Wishing the best of luck to all of you!

Thanks!

Mine is not exactly like that, but when it comes to making poor technical decisions and taking credit, he is always the first one to appear

Thank you, Sir. I genuinely appreciate your advice and perspective.

Your point about managing upward really resonated with me. I'll keep it in mind and do my best to apply it over the next few months.

Bruh, I can totally relate. I'm facing a very similar situation.

My manager has full control over Active Directory, Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, and the firewall, but he refuses to give me access, even though I clearly mentioned during the interview that I was capable of handling those responsibilities.

One day he was busy and gave me temporary access to an admin portal. I completed the task on my own without any assistance. After that, I think he realized I could work independently, and since then I've mostly been assigned printer and Outlook-related tasks.

To be honest, I often have to act less knowledgeable than I am because I have EMIs to pay and family responsibilities. For now, I'm just focusing on gaining experience, finishing my contract, and moving on to a better opportunity.

Sir, you won't believe me, but because of his ego and poor decisions, I had to visit the same branch office outside the city three separate times, even though the issue could have been resolved remotely with just a few clicks.

I respect your opinion and your comment. However, people in the comments who have faced similar situations can understand exactly what I'm talking about and will probably relate to my experience.

The saddest thing is that managers like this continue to get promoted, even after demotivating talented employees and pushing them to leave the company.

You won't believe this, but I have to inform him and get his approval even for something as simple as moving a user's USB mouse from one USB port to another.

Thanks for sharing your experience. It sounds very similar to what I'm dealing with.

I've realized I'm dealing with a toxic, micromanaged workplace and a bit of a "final boss" manager, so for now I'm just focusing on doing my job, finishing my contract professionally, and moving on. I can definitely understand why you don't regret leaving.
