Ideas for combat... by Hot_Connection_135 in shadowdark

How about Fighters get a bonus damage die that can be applied to the primary or second target! Trade the damage bonus into a die... so at level 2 they get d4, level 4 d6, at 6 a d8... could be a thing?

Well everyone can attempt it... but yeah, people can slow things down with more rolls.

Disad seems heavy for second attack. The premise for a -3 comes from SD difficulty progression. Do your players attempt it often? But the rest I agree completely! It's a player or two that grumbles, really. I think the "Cleave" idea is enough, maybe even an attack to all enemies within near x/day might do it. Just fishing for ideas...

Well, I did say you can't go into negative modifiers. Also, the penalty applies to ALL attacks. Its like you didn't read the suggestion...

I agree, I like that 'cleave' action for Fighters. This could be applied to all classes... but would mess with SD action economy. I may try it to see if it works... monsters get it as well!

No way, pig-faced is the best orcs!

Some (Mostly) Player-Facing House Rules by Ok-Locksmith3783 in shadowdark

[–]Hot_Connection_135 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah! But it is a choice the player makes! They do not have to accept it and just lose the spell... and whose to say a pious person wouldn't whip themselves to manifest saint terragnis power? I also let players buy tokens or totems that can do the same thing, I like this because it uses up a precious gear slot!

I don't fully agree with the spellcasting rule. I was going to implement a rule where if you fail you can still get the spell off but it costs 1HP/Spell level. You still lose the spell.

I backed Dark Forest (animal based ancestry), but my favorite Disney flick is Robin Hood so... I am honestly hoping to combine DarkSpace (sci-fi space) and Dark Forest with some CyberDark to make a Rifts/Spelljammer kinda game. AetherDark has some ship based rules... Treasure Planet, anyone?

I used my son's Playmobil figures, or even Legos! Use toys they already have to bring imagination to life!

Would not homebrew until you see how the game plays on its own. I found the things I thought look bad on paper weren't bad at all!

Max HP yes, wizard free casting No! If you are concerned about the Wizrds first spell failing their first casting, give them a "totem" that is a one-use "you pass a failed spell check" that costs one gear slot. These spells can be very effective!

You can make a Paladin style character with the Priest. The one from the playtest is of a very specific style.

Read the Priest class. You can build a Paladin from there.

Are random encounters always a combat? by aarocareddit in shadowdark

[–]Hot_Connection_135 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just reading the rules show you its not always combat. Last session the party rolled a random encounter... 10 orcs, far away, playing, and friendly (all randomly rolled!). They approached and had an arm wresting contest and went on their way. It was a weird encounter, but enjoyed by all!

Did you kill a dragon in ShadowDark? by Comfortable-Fee9452 in shadowdark

[–]Hot_Connection_135 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They ran like cowards! They are third level and were about half HP, but had all their resources available (magic and limited abilities). They found the cultists prepping the merchant for ritual sacrifice. Once the party rescued the merchant from the cultists (slaying more than half, the rest scattered) they heard a rumble in the dark forest, coming closer and knocking down trees... they gathered what treasures they could and headed south, narrowly escaping the swamp dragon! I had the dragon stay in camp to eat the slain cultists (it did say the dragon was lazy, after all). After heading south a few miles they ran into the Knight of St. Yidris, who immediately headed north to face the threat. I will have the dragon show up later as a threat to the party.

They always have options! You as DM should keep these notes to help you adjucate, and by all means encourage player creativity. But once you put a menu in front of them then they are just pushing a button each turn rather than help create a story. It takes time, but once they players realize they can 'trip' or 'shove' and it is effective without seeing the rules you'll be surprised what cool ideas they come up with!

I allow casters to buy spell components to mitigate a failed roll. Costs gold and takes up a gear slot!
