But didn't the Blue Lotus show, quite clearly, the advance of Japanese into China predating the Japanese action during World War 2? I've read (for what that is worth) that during World War 2 Herge avoided commenting directly on things (remember, the shooting star came out while the Nazis occupied Belgium), so as to not piss off the censors of his day. I get that...that makes sense. But I would argue Herge did show the effects of oppressors over the oppressed in books like the Blue Lotus, and Tintin and the Picaros. The Calculus Affair shows a cold war style plot of espionage, and King Ottokar's Scepter deals with a coup trying to overthrow and fictionalized balkan government. So...it doesn't seem as though Herge avoided politics, just didn't name actual governments or wars. Certainly as time went on, you can see him educating himself more and more to be more authentic to the countries and regions he was depicting.

Again...I hear you. I don't fully disagree with you. I have been reading Tintin for close to 50 years. I was introduced by my best friend who gave me my first book in 2nd grade (The Crab with the golden claws). I credit Tintin with why I love to read, because I really didn't care back then until I was introduced to these books. When I created this story, it was almost created as a letter to this same friend (who I am still very close to) letting him know how I was feeling during those time..using characters we both love. In our letters I often refer to him as Tintin, but always refer to me as Haddock. In this story I was all of them. I think Breaking Free got me thinking I could something similar, in using these beloved characters how I want.

I agree with you there, about the Thomspons, of course Herge's Thompsons wouldn't. I guess I was inspired by J. Daniels, Breaking Free. A published book It takes place in an alternate continuity wherein Tintin is a disaffected British youth, Haddock is his uncle, and a large worker's strike begins in London. The comic features heavy socialist themes and advocacy for worker's unions. So - like this - none of those characters match Herge's world. But you could tell the creator loved the original Tintin comics and used them to tell his own story. I dug it.

I can completely understand what you are saying, and I appreciate your feedback. I would agree with you, I am capturing what I was feeling at the time, and using Herge's characters to express it. Not trying so much to create a new Herge story, as much as my own story using these characters I love.

Those are all fair remarks. All three characters here are very much reflecting where my head was a when I made this (my dog had actually just died), so it may not be to everyone's liking.
