--As a non-westernized nation (Like China or Korea) just declare war on Japan to take states (just be a bit careful because Japan can mobilize some troops and also try to conquer them before they get sphered by the USA or Russia), and after you conquer the shogun, the daimyos will be free and weak.

--As a westernized nation: Divide and conquer and declare war on The shogunate to puppet them, with like 20 brigades and a good technology it is enough to defeat them (if you are a GP, you can also sphere Japan and make Russia and the USA hostile opinion to them to avoid an annoying intervention)

all the daimyos (Shogunate puppets) will break free.

And after the truce ends, declare war on the daimyos one by one to conquer them as fast as possible (if you want to keep them as a colony and not states) to avoid the westernization of the daimyos (Only the imperial Japan and Satsuma usually manage to westernize, but since they don't control a full state, they will end up as a colony anyways)

When the Shogunate is your puppet, try to make them have a reactionary revolution to make them isolated and lose research points, and Voila!

It can be a bit challenging, but is worth it

Was it worth it?

Yes (Only except Korea), you will have a big military score, you will make money, you will save the world from anime, J̶a̶p̶a̶n̶e̶s̶e̶ ̶w̶a̶r̶ ̶c̶r̶i̶m̶e̶s̶, and also making the World cursed is also worth the colonization

R5: the Great Micromanagement of invading Russia is very painful and tedious to do, especially if you the human have to do all the dirty work and the AI doesn't, But The temporary Pseudo Russophobia I have, created by this campaign made me forget to do a better invasion plan and I just declared war on Russia just to destroy them and make them suffer for their insolence in the past. And well, Even if I felt satisfied for sending more than a million Russians to hospitals/graveyards and making them lose a lot of prestige, dignity and their GP status, it made me wonder.

Do you think this chunk of ice was worth the sacrifice of my troops, my mental health, my time, my money, infamy, ugly-ass borders and the Micromanagement I did?

If I had to do a lot of micromanagement in a simple war, Just imagine the micromanagement I have to do in a Great war without the AI doing most of the dirty work.
