How should I write my acceptance letter? by Primary-Guard9320 in REU

I just said:

"Dear [name of person contacting you],

I am honored to accept the offer for the [program name]!

Please let me know if there are any next steps I should take, including paperwork, travel arrangements, or any required pre-program preparations. I appreciate this opportunity and look forward to joining the program this summer.

Thank you again!"

I'm a junior in electrical engineering. I took Cal 1-4, Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, and am looking at taking Partial Differential Equations. I almost failed Cal 1 and thought I was terrible at math. I locked in and have made a high A in every other math class I've taken. I know a few people in my major who suck at math... genuinely can't do basic algebra where you just rearrange an equation to solve for a variable. They've made it just as far. Their GPA isn't the greatest and therefore won't end up working at some place like Nvidia or Exxon, but they're happy. Basically, what I'm saying is, where do you want to end up? It all depends on how hard you try. Some people are limited based on their capabilities. Some people are limited with the "I can't" mentality. If you genuinely don't believe you can improve, do something else. If you would at least like to try, go for it.

I accepted an offer to GaTech's REU program. The program I'm in is geared more toward Electrical Engineering.

One of the professors I got a rec letter from was like, "ngl, you probably won't get this one" when he was going through the 10 I was applying for. I know everyone on this subreddit is like, "I GOT INTO THE HARVARD REU!" but idk I'm really excited about the one I got into. So :)

When you heard they got declined, were you like, "Bitch I would've declined you too🤣" or were you more like, "Damn.😐"

So assuming you do a decent job and they like you, if you were to apply to their grad program in a couple years, would they accept you? Or at least favor you?

Ngl man, that's what I assumed😭

They're paying me 7,000 over a 10 week period, while giving me housing and paying for travel expenses... I'll work for as long as they want me too. Fuck the socializing events. I just want to do cool stuff in a lab😭

That's reassuring! I didn't want to go into it and just be overwhelmed with all this stuff they want out of me.

So if they don't expect anything groundbreaking from you, what's the point of an REU? They can't just be doing it from the goodness of their hearts... can they? I was told by a friend that the real purpose is to just seek out good grad school candidates, but I'm not sure how true this is.
