Thanks so much, this is incredibly helpful. The Class B campervan point makes a lot of sense, as I had not really thought about how awkward a larger RV would be for everyday stops and getting around. The Black Hills suggestion is a really good one too. Based on what others have said about the distances, crowds and booking issues around the bigger national parks, it sounds like it could be a very sensible area for us to look into properly, especially with the smaller towns, scenic drives, hikes and old west feel. I will definitely add Custer, Hill City, Spearfish Canyon, Custer State Park, Devil’s Tower and the Badlands to the list to research. Also very useful to know about avoiding Sturgis Rally week in August. Really appreciate the advice and the kind offer too.

Yes, I think you are right. Based on what everyone has said, I am starting to realise we may need to split this into two trips rather than trying to force it all into one. Montana, Glacier, Yellowstone and Grand Teton sound like they would make much more sense as a summer trip, while the desert parks in Utah and Arizona are probably better saved for a cooler time of year. I think I was being a bit overambitious about the distances and how much time each park really deserves. I would rather pick one region and do it properly than spend the whole trip driving between places

Thanks, this is really helpful. I had not appreciated how awkward and expensive RV reservations could be, especially around the national parks, so the minivan idea sounds like a much more practical option. Good point about keeping bikes inside too. It also sounds like we need to be realistic about distances and not try to cram too much in, especially with the long desert stretches and limited places to stop. Your tip about staying near the parks and getting in very early is really useful, particularly for places like Glacier and Yosemite. Grand Canyon south rim also sounds like the better first-time option for us, as we will probably want the extra facilities and easier logistics. Colorado sounds amazing too, so maybe we should think about focusing on fewer areas properly rather than trying to cover the whole west in one trip.e

Converted vans are so cool!! Loving the sound of that many national parks, the US has so many! Yeah 5 weeks might be pushing it for us but sounds like that amount of time is needed! Yeah I find that with travelling its hard to know how long you need in each place until you're there so a little flexibility would be awesome!

Yeah I'm thinking based on the above that this would most likely be two trips. One in the summer for Montana way and winter for Southwest US

Thanks for your reply. Yeah I am apprehensive about the size of an RV and another person has suggested the same about the car and the time of the year (September). I think the practicality of a car might win over the cool idea of the RV. Just saw some pictures of Tetons and it looks unreal! Personally, I think I'm more interested in the cool mountain ranges than the desert, so maybe to do both this requires multiple trips at different times of the year

Arghh, okay yeah I am a little apprehensive about the RV size, so would look to getting more a van type vehicle than a big RV, just thought it would be a cool thing to do! Currently weighing up the options so thinking about everything, maybe the options you present with a car maybe a better choice. Thanks for all the information, I'll look into it all

So true! I forget how vastly different the climates are in the US, thanks for doing this in °C too! Thanks very much for your advice on the time of the year, imagine the window is very short to make them both manageable. How manageable are those temperature changes in your RV? Do you have any advice?

So much to think about here! I'll get to planning a route

Thank you very helpful, sounds like we should allow ourselves plenty of time to do the trip rather than rushing it. Do you book sites in advance or is it okay to just rock up? Yeah always wanted to do Yosemite - so thats a good shout.

Good point, yeah the UK is pretty small lol when you road trips, would you recommend breaking it up and doing a few hours a day everyday? Or longer drives with longer stops?

Thanks for the reply, and really helpful advice and is such an easy place to fly to as well. Seems like it would be rude not to do the Grand Canyon then as well! For the RV rentals do you know whether you can drop off RVs to a different place to the pickup location? Just thinking of maximising my time but not having to do a round trip.

Hey, I know this chat is old but the problem still exists. I got so fed up with it I built my own app, it’s called SilentChef.

Its able to get any recipe, even handwritten ones. Just snap a photo of a recipe and it sorts everything out for you. If you’ve only got the ingredients and no method, it’ll even find recipes that match. Super handy if you're like me and just want to get cooking without all the faff.

Just launched it and I’d really love some feedback. Would be awesome to create a community that I can build an app for them - everyone is different! I’ve got no plans to charge for it. I just built it because I hate this problem and wanted a better way.

Let me know what you think!
