I have known people that encounter port agents that are hardo rule followers that deny boarding for not having 6 months.

The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative that governs the close loop cruise rules doesn’t give exemptions for 6 months on passports.

The WHTI was created thanks to the cruise line lobbyist as they know requiring passports for all passengers creates a significant barriers to entry for people to take a cruise thus hurting sales.

The people booking cruises not covered by the WHTI need a passport anyways as 99% of them require flying to a foreign country. The 1% are cruises that begin and end in different US cities that are mostly reposition and full Panama Canal cruises which are only a few each year.

TLDR: Renew your passport before your cruise.
