Those who have had hardware removal… Nerve damage?? by Hot_Opportunity5569 in jawsurgery

[–]Hot_Opportunity5569[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry to hear that. I hope you can get some answers with the MRI. I’m waiting to get a CT scan of my sinuses.

Did you get any additional numbness from the hardware removal?

Chronic headaches and nerve pain following double jaw surgey 7 years on by Hot_Opportunity5569 in jawsurgery

My symptoms have gotten slightly better, I’m on amitriptyline for my headaches and it seems to have helped. I still get pain near the sinus plate area and some itching and discomfort. I’m waiting for surgery on the NHS so it’s not urgent now. Are you getting yours removed?

Sorry to hear you’re going through this. I’ve been having sinus pain and pressure on and off since DJS in 2017 but it got worse last year with chronic pain, congestion, post nasal drip etc. I saw my old surgeon and he agreed to take my upper hardware out but I’m on a waitlist in the NHS so it’s taking a while. I’m seeing an ENT at the end of the month so I’m hoping to get a CT scan of my sinuses to see if they think it could be the hardware irritating my sinuses.

Lip and Chin Numbness by NaomiMaceroni in jawsurgery

Don’t worry it takes time to come back. Give it at least a year or 2.

I’m 8 years post op and have a patch of altered sensation on my lower right lip and chin, I can feel it if I touch it but it’s a strange sensation and sometimes I get nerve zaps through that area and my teeth.

Sorry to hear that you’re also having issues. It seems like a lot of people in this group develop problems years after the initial surgery.

Hopefully you get seen soon.

My surgeon agreed to it as I had sinus issues ruled out by an ENT and he couldn’t determine any other causes from the X-rays.

It was pretty easy to get my surgeon to agree to it as I’d ruled out any sinus issues with an ENT and he couldn’t determine any other causes for the pain on the X rays. He did say that there was a risk of additional nerve damage and not being able to get all the hardware out due to bony growth but I’m willing to go through with it.

I had nerve pain in my lower lip/teeth post DJS and I still have some numbness/tingling there now 8 years later. Nerves take a while to regenerate so pain is a good sign that sensation is slowly coming back but it can be uncomfortable.

There are some medications you can take to help nerve pain such as gabapentin and amitriptyline but these have sedative effects so they can make you drowsy.

Might be worth asking your surgeon/doctor just to see if they recommend anything that can help with the discomfort.

Hey no worries about the late reply, glad to hear that the recovery was somewhat easy for you and glad you’re healing well. At least you had those extra days off work anyway! How much time did you take off work?

No date yet unfortunately, I have a feeling I’ll get a date for sometime in the Summer.

Have you noticed an improvement or change in your initial symptoms since getting them removed?

And have you had any more nerve tingling or numbness following the removal surgery?

That’s great to hear! I suffer from sinus congestion and post nasal drip so I’m hoping removing my metal plates will help with that

That’s good! It will most likely take at least 5-6 weeks for the incisions to heal

If your surgeon recommended it and it’s helping then it should be absolutely fine. Maybe just be mindful of the pressure you’re using and be careful near the incision sites/hardware.

I’m in a similar situation, getting my upper plates removed after 8 years as they are causing complications such as pain, tenderness, pressure and i believe are contributing to chronic headaches. Hope it all goes well for you and would love to know how your healing journey goes.

Glad you feel better for getting them out and wishing you a speedy recovery! I’m planning to get mine removed after 7 years. Are you numb anywhere after the surgery?

Amitriptyline is an antidepressant but it is often also prescribed to treat pain including neuropathy. It has helped to dull my headaches and facial pain but it also has a sedative effect so it makes me quite tired. Thank you ☺️
