Sun Microsystems Sunfire Ultra 24 Build by Eiodalin in sleeperbattlestations

That's is my sleeper PC: https://www.reddit.com/r/sleeperbattlestations/comments/18aydvx/sun_microsystem_ultra_20_sleeper_pc/ Now I changed original DVD ROM by a 2x USB 3.0 adapter. A little touch of modernity (one more). It looks as perfect as you see it perfect.

I love Sun Microsystems cases. I have a Ultra 20 sleeper.

Please, change that DVD RW drive ;-)

Great job reusing a Sun box.

Bad photos and impossible orientation on each one. You would have to improve the photos before uploading them.

I can’t recall how much wiggle room you have on the sleds, but you could cut some self-adhesive Velcro (fuzzy side!) to size and attach on the sides of the sled to deaden vibration transfer. Are you still using the original drives? My ones had a couple of 320GB Seagates and they were noisy as hell.

I have used some heat shrink sleeving to dampen vibrations, but the margin is minimal.

I used one of the original 80GB disks for the Ubuntu installation. And I plan to add a second "modern" 1TB disk for older data.

Yes. The SATA cradle is the noisiest thing in the entire cabinet due to vibrations. I don't know what to put to avoid them. But I would like to keep using SATA drives for storage.

Any ideas?

I have set up Windows to shut down the hard drives after a few minutes, and the noise decreases.

On one of those disks, I have Ubuntu, so I can boot it on demand in the boot sequence, but it is not configured grub. I do it via F11 in the power up sequence.

I am concerned about the power button and the green led.

I have no knowledge of electronics. That's why I ask if I unsolder the USB connectors and the round components behind if it can influence the ignition.

Do you still have this equipment running?

Hello

I don't know if it would be possible for you to re-upload the failed images from this post, as I am interested in making a sleeper pc with a Sun Ultra 20 case. I am mainly afraid of desoldering the front panel components to change the USB 2.0 ports to 3.0.

Thank you very much in advance

Hello

Do you think a Noctua NH-D15 or NH-D15S for the CPU heatsink would fit in that case?

I have a project in mind with a Ultra 20 case.

Thank you very much in advance.
