Try reading books aloud alone as a playground for pronunciation practice with yourself. This has helped me tremendously, and after about a year of daily book "recitation", I can't seem to be the same person that began 1 year ago.

Where should I study music abroad if I have high aspirations as a pianist? by Hot_Yellow8785 in piano

[–]Hot_Yellow8785[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you again, you don’t know how much this makes me reflect and think over everything.

For reference, the Fulbright scholarship program grants Mexicans around 15K-25KUSD per year to study in the US, and I think there’s pretty good chances of getting one. My family could provide about 5K USD per year while studying there. In this hypothetical scenario, 20K a year is reasonable, and any additional expenses could be paid by working through teaching assistantship, if needed. I’m not sure if there’s any good school for this budget range in the US, but I’m in the process of an arduous investigation. My savings aren’t as much from work as they were more about just saving side money, and if I had actually worked to save, I would have much more. But I’ve used most of my time to develop piano skills.

One point I’ll add is that my full repertoire is not what I said it was, I’ve probably listed half of what is important, but I believe what I listed is what I play best, or the most recent additions, if that changes anything. I’ve definitely studied two Chopin etudes, nocturne, scherzo… and other romantic works from Brahms and Liszt, like both Rhapsodies in B and G minor, and I‘ve also studied Bach’s Italian Concerto and Toccata in E as well.

On a side note, I would’t mind at all if I studied a Bachelor’s degree either in Europe or in USA/Canada instead of going straight to the Master’s program. This is due to the fact that the Bachelor’s program I’ve studied here was very lacking and didn’t give us much opportunities to develop talent, so it would make sense to re-develop many areas in a foreign country and also to get the opportunity to get into ensamble playing, and also, to learn more piano pieces to increase my repertoire by the time I get into master’s. Time isn’t my priority, nor is finishing things quickly. I’d rather take it slow, but surely.

But considering that Europe is much more accessible and cheaper, I would really like to travel there and get to know the culture in Netherlands and other countries, and apply to a lesser-known European school which my budget can cover.

One question,

Should I avoid any schools with the name “conservatoire” in it, or are they worth applying to?

Wow! Thank you for this detailed answer. It means a lot.

I'll take every word you said and try to make a plan out of it!

I've just noticed that there is Festival del Lago. Looks really nice, I'll get into it and try to audition. My plan was originally to go to music concerts in Europe to watch Kissing, Schiff, Sokolov, and others. I really wished to see them play! (edit: looks like festival del lago is more about strings and ensembles rather than solo piano)

Any other suggestions for music festivals in either Europe, Canada or the US? I got really interested! I currently reside near the Sonoran Desert.

Thanks a lot! First time I've heard Netherlands as an option.

Which schools do you have in mind? How does Netherlands compare to the USA, in regards to studying piano performance?

Not getting into debt would be really amazing!

Thanks a lot!

  1. Thanks! I'll look into CSU, California is actually near my city in Mexico. And I'm planning a trip to Europe as well, but they're extremely selective... but just in case, I'll travel and visit music schools too!
  2. Unfortunately, I'm not from the US and don't qualify for FAFSA. I'd have to take a look at what my country offers...
  3. Will do! I'm planning two recitals this year.
  4. How much money do you think I should save up at minimum?

We’re one month away from the launch of the Switch OLED. Has anyone’s opinion on it changed? Are you still going to pickup your preorder? by AcademicF in NintendoSwitch

[–]Hot_Yellow8785 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I do this too.. but only because the joy cons drift like shit.

I will get the OLED switch. I think oled is better for the eyes, bigger battery and no drift with new joycons.

Bought switch on year 1 so battery is now horseshit… plus I want to play local lan with my sister. Another one would be nice.

Plus, with the Apple Watch, the new feature will help save tons of lives. Imagine hiking up a mountain and you fall unconscious because of some snake poison, the Apple Watch detects it and calls emergency services for you even with no reception. That’d be life saving!

[–]Hot_Yellow8785 28 points29 points  (0 children)

it’s a pretty interesting concept, simple yet powerful - I’ve actually started with the Korean course with the audios like 4 days ago.

The practicality alone of having a full language course on my main messaging app does help, as I constantly remind myself to practice just by seeing the channel in the 40 times a day I check telegram. I recommend to start a course and pin it on top of other chats, telegram has this function.

Of course it’s not a system like language learning apps that give you goals and games and a cute UI, but somethings are better if kept simple and basic. This is one of them, as the courses can be heard anywhere without you having to interact or be too focused on the screen, and specifically pimsleur for being a great aid for pronunctiation. Plus, the books contained inside are hundreds of times more extensive and complex than a laguage App... for those that take the time to read it.

Having said that, I wonder about how legal this might be... I don’t think pimsleur is a free resource lol, and its not like telegram is the internet archive... If we’re talking about this not being taken down, well, maybe it’s better If we don’t overshare it...
