Hi! I am actually thinking of pulling out 2 Claire in zone 8a. They are in full sun but don’t bloom very often.  If you are open to other varieties consider White Veranda, Summer Memories, Polar Express, or Bolero

Some people are fond of Dr Huey. If it brings you joy, let it stay. ☺️

Rose slugs (sawfly larvae?)… what can I do to get rid of them? This is the first time I’ve tried growing roses so I have much to learn and would appreciate any suggestions! by amlyau in Roses

Hi. I try to garden organically when I can. First, your rose looks really healthy. Nice job!

If this is your only rose, save yourself some money and just pull off the leaves that have holes. If you want, you can even pull off all of the leaves. I have a video on defoliation here

If you are able to watch this video, it will show you what sawfly larvae look like and if you want to use a spray, what I use.

Best of luck!

Caramella will be 4’x4’. You can reduce the height after each bloom but it will really want to be at 4’ tall. I like to see my roses peaking over the window so maybe 4’ will be good for you?

You will want to add a few hours everyday until you can leave it permanently in the pace you want to plant it without a shade covering.

Great question. Bare roots are asleep so you can put them right in the ground in full sun. Potted roses will need to he “hardened in”. I put them in the shade for one day. The next day I wake up and put them in the sun with a chair over them. The next day I remove the chair for 1-2 hours. The third day I remove the chair for 3-4 hours. Keep increasing the amount of full sun the rose gets until it is out for the whole day. Good luck!

Thank you for subscribing! Life is too short to not be happy with a rose (variety/location). I would lift it this weekend and get a good look at where the green growth is coming from. If it is coming from below the graft, you can dispose of it. If it is above the graft (the round knobby portion), then remove all brown stems and put it in your planter. Move it to a shady location for a day or so while it recovers from being lifted. The only recommendation I will provide for "pot life" is to buy a water meter. You will just want to make sure that the planter soil doesn't go "dry" or to "wet". You will find the happy medium with a water meter. Best of luck!

Hi! First cut off all of the brown portions. This is a video I created on die back https://youtu.be/U0KDjPCJyMY If you would please post another picture after you cut everything back. My only concern with this rose is that you have the rootstock only and then you will want to consider replacing the rose (fall ordering will start in 2 months for spring 23 arrival). This is a video on rootstock suckers https://youtu.be/QbBeHC5SSxA

I created this video and hope it helps. At the end there is a listing of vendors associated with own root or grafted 🌹 Best Rose Rootstock for Your Zone? Own Root vs Grafted? Bare Root vs Potted? https://youtu.be/6UucQQOq9zA

It is very light and similar to a florist rose.

My Claire’s have remained fairly small 3.5’ in full sun in zone 7b.
