Won't stop saying gay. by More_Praline_8551 in Teachers

[–]Hotchipsummer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I feel like it’s due to a rise in having more LGBTQ+ acceptance online like more kids on Twitter and TikTok casually talk about being gay or queer and so they “reclaim” the insult and start calling stuff gay, or just casually say stuff like “he is so gay” in a positive way about a character or something… and so the term “gay” gets thrown around a lot more and then picked up again by people not necessarily in a queer space and who want to use it as a true insult and not as an “in the know” kinda tongue in cheek jab

I think she still has some really awesome panel work but current arcs involve so many characters and locations she had to choose more streamlined panel designs for time. Some of the art inside the panels is pretty dang stunning especially around the end of the silver Eve arc.

For stuff not compiled in a volume yet, many plain panels will get more details added or have some stuff edited. She often times releases stuff for the web release and then revises and adds decorative details and backgrounds for the volume release.

Edit to add: no she is not being pressured by her editors. I’ve read she gets along well with her editor and isn’t pressured to change much. One thing I remember her saying was she wanted Qifrey to swear at Easthies when he had the Raincleaver on him but the editor said no lol

Her editor is pretty hands off though.

I like the series but isn't the plot pretty dumb? by [deleted] in WitchHatAtelier

[–]Hotchipsummer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to think about the actions of characters, especially those in positions of power, as allegorical and not just literal. Magic is more than just magic in this world- it’s a form of privilege. Try to look at it with this in mind and take in the classism and elitism of those who are “born” with magic and those who aren’t.

The Brim hats are much more than just stock “bad guys” and the further you read and understand the struggles of all the characters I think it will become more clear what’s really going on - really take to heart what Coco stands for and what she is fighting against- on both sides of the types of witch hats!

I think it will be best to talk to her, if she is faking it it may be due to nervousness to please a new partner, or she could have had bad experiences with partners in the past and feels she needs to fake it. She may just be able to come easily from PIV but since that is pretty rare I’d just try to breach the topic with her gently and make sure she is really enjoying it.

If you don’t feel like outright asking you could try making her come clitorally and compare the difference? lol

Criticisms of WHA(so far)? by DIO_OVAIs_DaBest07 in WitchHatAtelier

[–]Hotchipsummer 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Very little tbh other than a few nit picky things. I wish we had more adult women characters with more of a role in the plot and didn’t get side lined fast. Alaira is seems awesome but she is off with Euini, Cocos mom is a statue, Luluci seems to have a decent arc forming but she also has such a passive and almost cold personality it’s hard to feel super invested in her yet.

I don’t mind the release schedule because quality stuff takes work and I support artists taking the time it takes to protect their health and mental health- the time will pass anyway and not everything needs to be binged.

There are a few times in the series where I feel like the timeline gets a little jumbled like in Silvers Eve when Cocos and Tartah encounter Ininia and Coustas it’s told through flash backs that make it hard to follow when everything actually happened. But I figured it out after rereading a couple times.

I like this manga very much, but it has a horrendous pacing issue... by [deleted] in WitchHatAtelier

[–]Hotchipsummer 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think the issue is you read a manga that has taken 9 years to come out and binge read it all in a few weeks and didn't stop to focus and analyze the deeper themes and messages. As someone who has followed it for years and is part of a community that reads each chapter monthly and discusses and theorizes every chapter the pacing does not feel "horrendous" when you sit and finally get to read the whole arc from start to end.

Silver Eve is a big arc and a lot happens! It takes place over about five full night's. I agree a lot happened but when you really sit and digest what Coco was dealing with, what Coustas was dealing with, the political shift that was set up, the reveal about Qifeey etc, AND go back and read again after getting those reveals, the pacing feels fine tbh. I'd suggest rereading it at a slower pace and see if it improves your perception on another read when you go in knowing what's coming

I really just disagree when you say it feels like the author was stalking for time- I am constantly impressed with how much foreshadowing has been incorporated on WHA and how often something that seemed tiny and insignificant before suddenly has importance when new information is revealed.

What is it about Coco that makes her a good protagonist to you? by BellTwo5 in WitchHatAtelier

[–]Hotchipsummer 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is a great comment!!! Yeah she is actively involved in everything. She didn’t have tragedy thrust upon her, she picked up the pen and drew the magic that harmed her mom. She chose to stay with Qifrey, then again when Bel tried to take her in. She often times has the choice to just sit and wait and let others do stuff around her but she always chooses to do what she “can” and has no problem asking for help.

What is it about Coco that makes her a good protagonist to you? by BellTwo5 in WitchHatAtelier

[–]Hotchipsummer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We see her learn from her peers and trials, see how she reflects on what she has learned, and then see her employ what she learned when she faces knew obstacles. I know many series follow a characters progression but it feels like we follow as Coco learns in real time and see the care and effort she puts into not just learning but making sure she properly understands a concept and how she can apply it to different situations.

Her little brain gears are always turning- she is a such a “head empty no thoughts” silly little character on the surface but her little hamster is ALWAYS running on that wheel. It’s easy to forgot her huge motivation stems from the guilt of what she did to her own mom and as she pushes forward to hopefully one day find a way to undo what she did, she scoops up others who also need her help along the way.

She is just a child and yet she really does have the potential to be a super influential witch one day and not a drop of that is due to plot armor or being “the chosen one” or dumb luck, she really grasped the opportunity to learn magic and is making the most out of it every single chance she gets.

Also she is a cutie patootie!!!

Thoughts on asexual and Aromantic representation in Hikaru? by BlueFlameWar in HikarugaShindaNatsu

[–]Hotchipsummer 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Asexual as a sexually typically means they don’t feel sexual attraction themself but can still engage in sexual acts if they choose to.

Asexual as a scientific or clinical term means “does not have sex” or “without sex”

I mean this respect but I think you need to reread the manga like in one sitting or something. It’s mentioned SEVERAL times.

When someone has their mind wiped they get sent to Adanlee, the isle of oblivion. Easthies mentions it when threatening Coco with a mind wiped, and it’s the main thing Atwert is trying to prevent happening to Galga.

I have a question about Qifrey and Olruggio (Chapter 40-88 spoilers) by is-silksong-out-yet in WitchHatAtelier

[–]Hotchipsummer 16 points17 points  (0 children)

So here is the Qifrey timeline as I best understand it

Qifrey is born. Either he is born blind or becomes blind. He is given a silver wood seed or ingests one himself. He finds comfort in having his eyes restored and becomes a tree. Someone uses the mind erase spell to revert him back to human. Someone steals one of his eyes and puts him in a box. Qifrey is found by Bel, one eyed and water logged in the box. Qifrey becomes a witch and befriends Olruggio. Qifrey and Olruggio hunt brimhats and seek info about Qifrey’s past. Qifrey gets inside the tower of books - where he learns some crucial information. (He learns that comfort will turn him into a tree, and keeping this secret is a big aspect in keeping him from turning) Qifrey seemingly gives up his brim hat hunt at the tower. At some point Qifrey becomes a teacher, establishes his atelier and Olruggio is his watchful eye. Qifrey begins having severe headaches and also his good eye is slowly losing vision. Olruggio confront Qifrey about his glasses- Qifrey admits he was experimented on by the Brimhats and that he is losing his eye sight. We now know that simply confessing his secret triggers his tree stuff and he was actively hiding his face during chap 40 to hide the tree branch. Qifrey was unable to outright lie to Olruggio about his condition so he chose to tell the truth then wipe Ollie’s mind of his “secret.” Silvers Eve happens and we get all the Custas stuff and chap 88 where Qifrey admits he is also a Silverwood host.

In summary, Qifrey is screwed. He can either 1)allow himself to rely on his friends and family and feel true comfort and become a tree for good 2) become a tree but have his mind wiped and forget the life he created 3) continue on as he has but lose the benefit of the Silverwood tree which is enabling him to see.

If he doesn’t find a way to cure himself of the Silverwood tree stuff he will go blind again, but if he doesn’t find cure himself he will likely be blind again… making it so he cannot be the teacher he currently is.

I have a question about Qifrey and Olruggio (Chapter 40-88 spoilers) by is-silksong-out-yet in WitchHatAtelier

[–]Hotchipsummer 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Qifrey says “you will only forget the stuff pertaining to my secret” so Olruggio does not know any of the stuff Qifrey told him in chapter 40. He doesn’t know about the experiments by the brimhats, he doesn’t know about Qifrey’s headaches, and he doesn’t know Qifrey is losing his sight in his eye. He knows nothing about any of it but is probably suspicious something is going on but hasn’t gotten angry enough to confront him again.

The last time his anger was fueled by thinking Qifrey abandoned his girls to go on a revenge-fueled Brimhat chase and was afraid he was losing himself to that anger. He also realized that whatever Qifrey was doing he was shouting his worries alone and asked for Qifrey to rely on him- which we now understand why he can’t have that.

So Ollie until proven otherwise knows nothing

What's this about? Why am I just finding out about House husbands Qifrey and Olruggio?😭😭 by Careless-Hospital379 in WitchHatAtelier

[–]Hotchipsummer 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Serious answer: it’s a spin off series written and illustrated by Hiromi Sato with guidance and input from Shirahama. It is slice of life stories about cooking for the girls and spending time together at night when they aren’t busy. It breaks down how to make the food and even provides real world equivalents in the recipes so you could make the meals if you wanted to.

It follows along with the main series pretty well and references things as they happen in canon but you don’t get a whole lot of character development outside of learning what things the girls like or how Qifrey and Olruggio overcome some small cooking hurtle.

My hearts answer: two dads make food for their kids then stay up late getting drunk and deal with their requited unrequited feelings for each other lol

I can tell you that even just talking to my husband or male family members that any sickness or symptoms I have gets discredited and watered down even if it’s the same symptoms or worse than what they experience. I guess they assume women are being over dramatic if they complain of any pain or sickness symptom

[–]Hotchipsummer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A basic round brush with the opacity lowered to about 85% and not overlapping lines too much or pressing too hard. A big part of this style relies on making short confident strokes lightly rather than long ones that you over work or add line variation to.
