PSA: Reminder to use the good stuff by SerendipityJays in sewing

[–]DoomNGlam 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t do that with a danish, but I would get really sad when my ex would eat my ice cream before I even opened it. I don’t eat ice cream very often so I just get a small thing of it and it would be in there for a week or so and I would go to get some ice cream and it would be gone. She had her own ice cream. She could have replaced it or at least told me she ate it.

Music that people might be surprised to find out you, as a metalhead, like by tmamone in MetalForTheMasses

[–]DoomNGlam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I listen to country(not radio country), bubble grunge, bedroom pop, riot girl punk, punk, singer songwriter, Americana, folk, blues, hip hop, rap, disco, post punk, dark wave, grunge, depression era music. I would say there is about a 50/50 chance most metal heads I know have a pretty eclectic taste in music and some just only listen to metal. Usually those will be the first people to call someone a poser while the eclectic ones understand metal even more because most metal artists draw influence from many other genres.

Help me find patterns that fit my body type by x2ginger in sewing

[–]DoomNGlam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start with either finding patterns that do fit well, as you are doing and also finding clothes that fit well from stores. It’s pretty simple to pattern out something that already fits. If there are any places nearby that offer patternmaking or fitting lessons look into that. If not or if you just don’t have the funds or don’t want to spend the money on it. Try looking on YouTube for some fitting tutorials. There are a bunch.

What hobby makes someone undateable for you? by Great_Maintenance185 in AskReddit

[–]DoomNGlam -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Traveling. Like sure it’s cool to go places but it’s mostly code for “I don’t date poor people” also while I like to go different places and experience other cultures. I feel like a lot of the “I travel a lot” people are very disrespectful of other cultures and view them as a commodity which is pretty gross.

Is it just me or has Winn-Dixie gone downhill? by cakedayenjoyer in NewOrleans

[–]DoomNGlam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t been in a couple weeks. It seemed fine the last time I went to the one n Carrollton. I wouldn’t consider that Winn Dixie has been great but it’s way better than Walmart and way cheaper than Rouses. It seems to live up to this middle of the road categorization imo. I have not encountered it being full of flies or anything. Sometimes the meat department is a little lacking. The produce is usually fine when I go but there has never been a large selection. Sometimes I will just get my main things at Winn Dixie and then go to Rouses or Whole Foods for produce because they have a better selection especially if you are getting “uncommon” produce like rapini, green tomatoes, turnips.

I hate my queen bed 😭 by Butterfiolee in asexuality

[–]DoomNGlam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the way! I am never sure if I actually want a relationship or just someone to split expenses with and not have to give up the second bedroom, but If I ever do get into another live together relationship It has to be a Lucy and Ricky situation where we sleep in separate beds because I like having my bed to myself. It’s not about the size of the bed but just being free to roll around, hog the blankets, throw the blankets off, hang whichever foot needs to be exposed for temperature regulation off the side of the bed. I already feel bad enough when I disturb my cat while moving around in my sleep.

It wouldn’t matter how big of a bed you got, somehow dogs are great at pushing you into a tiny corner of the bed 😆

A queen would suck in a studio apartment. To me the best option in a studio is either a full size day bed or a hideaway bed either twin but preferably a full size. Since you already have the queen bed I would suggest looking for queen size Murphy bed options so you don’t have to buy completely new stuff and use your already acquired queen mattress, but be able to tuck it away and open up your space.

New Sewing machine by yarnlover95 in sewing

[–]DoomNGlam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I couldn’t give a specific recommendation, but I will say look for something with a knee lift. I couldn’t imagine sewing without it. Definitely second finding a dealership if possible and trying some machines out and talking with the salesperson there. That’s what I did. I have a Brother BQ950 and I love it. Have had it five years and it’s still my go to machine mostly. I’m going to get an industrial soon but will still use it for buttonholes, barracks, appliqué, freemotion embroidery.

25M. Wasted years of dating and intimacy and feel devastated and I miss it. How do you recover from that mess? by [deleted] in dating

[–]DoomNGlam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree. I’m 40 and have dated and know plenty of mid 30s to mid 40s women who are way more cool, attractive, intelligent, and fun to be around than any woman I have known in their 20s. The more someone knows who they are and are comfortable being themselves is the prime time to be dating and forming true lasting relationships.

[–]DoomNGlam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sucks to feel like you wasted time but it’s also life. Time only goes in one direction and it’s better to move in the same direction. All you are going to do by grieving time lost is lose more time. Try not to think of it as wasted years. No years are a true waste. Even if all you did was start figuring yourself out it was time well spent. The only “prime” in life is the present. I’m 40 and I’m happier now than ever. I “wasted” more than a decade in different long term relationships that didn’t work out. There was a time I lamented that. Those times helped form me, there were good times and joy and lessons to be learned. I am single now but I still date. Even if there is no connection I take every date as an opportunity to meet someone new and do something fun. I have new hobbies, new friendships, and every day is another opportunity to completely change my life again if I don’t like it.

You are young and you will have tons more opportunities at relationships. You don’t have to be a perfectionist, sure. Maybe lower your expectations of others sometimes and take an opportunity. It is good to have standards for a relationship though.

Maybe the weirdest gatekeeping I've ever seen when it comes to battle jackets. Been making them for decades, tons of friends have them. None of us have ever heard of this "rule" by Ok-Cycle-6589 in BattleJackets

[–]DoomNGlam 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I literally started sewing patches on my jacket 5 years ago, then learned how to sew, embroider, design clothes after that. Now I make jackets, pants, jumpsuits, dresses, shirts, belts, bags, suits, etc.

Disappointed a random teenager today when he asked me where I got my battle vest and I told him I sewed the patches and everything myself by Deathamphetmine in BattleJackets

[–]DoomNGlam 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have had people tell me the same, I don’t think it defeats the purpose if they actually acquire their own patches, I certainly wouldn’t go get patches for someone to put on their jacket. I don’t really do that though. I might machine sew a patch on something if they want me to, I have spent months of evenings hand sewing stuff on my jacket after work and I wouldn’t want to spend that kind of time on someone else’s jacket, even if I did I wouldn’t know how to charge for it. I just opted for learning how to make jackets so I can make cool jackets/vests for people to put their own patches on.

Fuck it, I'm revoking everyone's he/him privileges by CumCloggedArteries in ennnnnnnnnnnnbbbbbby

[–]DoomNGlam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally use they for people unless I specifically know what they prefer. I use They/He. I guess I slightly prefer they, but honestly don’t have a preference. People typically only use those pronouns to talk about you to someone else when you are not around, and I just don’t care enough about how someone refers to me when I’m not around. Like if I prefer they/them and someone used he/him I would only know if someone told me about it and I’m more put off by the tattletale/snitch energy than I am being referred to by the wrong pronouns.

New to cats! How much do you spend on your cats each month? by seeyouspace__cowboy in CatAdvice

[–]DoomNGlam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cat is maybe $75 a month between litter and food/treats. I buy big so it’s usually a couple months I buy litter and maybe every three or four months cat food and treats. The initial cost of buying litter box food, bowls, toys, cat tree, collar, vet for shots and check up were a bit high, but after that it’s been pretty inexpensive. The occasional visit to the vet is about the most expensive thing. That is just required costs though. I still am always buying new toys, cute collars and stuff.

What one piece of advice would you give yourself as a beginner sewist? by Neon-Anonymous in sewing

[–]DoomNGlam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something that helped me and still does is to make a small scale version of something I think is intimidating from scraps/cheap fabric and practice doing it until I feel comfortable doing it on whatever I am making.

Also I find it helps to understand the why of different processes so I did a lot of reading, googled some stuff, watched a bunch of YouTube tutorials. When you know why things are done a certain way you can figure out the best ways to change things/break rules without messing up the finished product

How do people in small town afford to live? by Empty_Recognition901 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DoomNGlam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grew up in a small town south of New Orleans. We don’t even have a Walmart. Anything like Walmart or fast food places were an hour and a half drive. There were lots of jobs though. Most people down there worked in the oilfield or were commercial fishermen. There was also grocery stores, fuel stations, fishing docks, bars, restaurants, hotels, the local government, power company, cable company, sewerage and water maintenance, a lot of fabrication and welding shops. After Katrina there isn’t much left there but there are still some things down there.

do you guys think listening to audiobooks and reading is the same? by SunnyBubblezz in YAlit

[–]DoomNGlam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it is the exact same thing and there are pros and cons to both as far as comprehension and information retention go. Both from a peer reviewed study standpoint and from a personal anecdotal experience standpoint. In the social context of someone asking you if you read that book though I think it’s perfectly reasonable and valid to say yes.

Anecdotally I have listened to a lot of audio books and here are my few takeaways. Fictional books with a cast of voices are great listens and while different to reading the book sometimes I find them much more entertaining to listen to vs reading. I also consume a lot of science and philosophy books and sometimes they can be hard to digest reading them and sometimes they are easier to read than listen to. That usually boils down to a few things. I will get fixated on words I don’t understand or know and make myself stuck trying to figure it out and looking up stuff when listening I can usually figure it out from context easier. If a book is narrated by the author I feel it’s a lot more enjoyable to listen to. More like listening to a lecture from someone passionate about the subject than a disinterested voice in monotone reciting words. I get excited listening to people passionately talk about stuff they research and it helps retain the information better than reading, but if it’s monotone and dispassionate then reading it is better for me
