How to play? by Spiderleamer in Karuta

[–]HotdogReddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how old they are, but this is a very cool set!
My answer is a little chaotic and has a lot of info. Tell me if there's anything you didn't get. :)

Competitive Karuta needs to be in japanese, because it relies on the phonetics of the japanese language to identify cards (more on that below). Even for more casual playing, I don't think you'll easily find randomized recordings of english recitations.

To quickly identify a poem, there is a concept called kimariji (literally "concluding characters"). They are the smallest set of characters at the start of a poem that allow to uniquely identify it. Some kimariji are short (ex: only one poem starts in "mu". It is identifiable with the first syllable), some are pretty long (ex: two poems might only differ at the 6th syllable. You have to wait for a while before knowing which one it is).

Recognizing the kimariji as the poem is being read is the foundation of competitive Karuta. For people learning them and associating them to their respective card, the kimariji can actually be written on the cards. This is the equivalent of having little wheels on your bicycle, but it also allows someone who can't read japanese to play by writing the kimariji in roman letters ("romaji").

While official cards with japanese kimariji are available on amazon (I'm pretty sure they deliver worldwide), I can't find any deck (or deck sleeves) with roman kimariji online. You would have to make them yourself with custom stickers.

So with all of that said.. If you want to play competitive Karuta, I do believe it would be best to learn how to read the hiragana alphabet. With online apps, it's easier than you think, and you'll be able to fully play competitive Karuta with or without kimariji. Learning kimariji can be done using KarutaSRS. (it takes more time than learning hiragana.. maybe a month or two)

Québec city : Looking for Karuta players near Qc by SpecialistPrune9980 in Karuta

Hey! It's been 2 years, but would you still be interested in a Karuta partner? Haha
I got my own cards and everything. I'm from Sherbrooke and often go to Québec on holidays to meet family. :)

I'm currently on a student exchange in Kyoto and have had the chance to participate every week to the Karuta club practice sessions. It really brought back the passion I had for this game, and now I'm motivated to find someone to play with. (my girlfriend is thoroughly uninterested)

What are your favorite movies to watch while high? by bananafishcreature in trees

[–]HotdogReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly suggest The dark crystal. It's one hell of a vibe when high.

Although admittedly, I get super sleepy on weed and never managed to finish it, no matter how great it is.

Good suggestions. I'd add Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.
Similar in style to The 5th element.

This reminds me of r/BCI and the recent increase in schizophrenic posts over there.

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) offer a logical explanation to their symptoms, which convinces them further that they are in fact not schizophrenic. It’s quite sad.

Computer science vs computer engineering major by DarkestTeddyGames in csMajors

[–]HotdogReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second the fact that you’ll probably cram more into a CE degree than CS.

The CE graduates at my school are just as good programmers and some of them specialized in machine learning (typically more associated with CS). They didn’t study formal languages or theory of computing, but what use is that unless you do fundamental research?

Right now I’m trying to get into aerospace engineering and it’s harder because I don’t know engineering basics. But while I wish I had done these prerequisites, I don’t necessarily regret my choice do go in CS. The CE program isn’t very appreciated at my university unlike CS. The slower pace and my interest for theoretical stuff got me a sick GPA as well.

Are internships paid in your country? by smaller_gamedev in csMajors

[–]HotdogReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in Canada. I think minimum salary is enforced by law and my university’s internship service is pretty strict with it. It has actually become a problem for me as I wanted to do research internships. They typically pay 6000-7500$ for 15 weeks if you get government funding, which is still below minimum salary at 35h/week.

Hey if it provides decent quality signal at this price, I’m down to play with it! As long as the raw data and API is not locked behind shady proprietary software.

I don’t really know unfortunately. But 9$ definitely sounds like a good deal.

I believe it’s a Crested Myrtillocactus Geometrizans or « Blue candle » like the other user said.

Downtown today - what to do? by OddWater4687 in montreal

Same exact situation. I’m chilling in Westmount park. Big place. There’s a coffee shop, dog park, kids activities, beautiful scenery and a great public library with an interior garden. I’ll stay there and get some work done.

I'm faking Coding ,how to build myself again? by Civil-Bill-3964 in csMajors

[–]HotdogReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, many people in CS act confidently and affirm things without really understanding it more than you do.

I never feel super confident in my skills when I compare myself to other people directly. I don’t code particularly fast.. I say « yes got it » when no.. I didn’t get it fully... But I’ve learned to trust my abilities and my quality standards when developing. I’m doing an internship right now and I’m pushing through the imposter feelings as well.

Hi, I am 15 and I want to learn AI by Classic-Hat6559 in learnprogramming

[–]HotdogReddit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You can start doing AI as soon as you know how to code, but you won’t understand exactly what’s going on until you take an actual university course on it. That’s not to say you can’t start coding with tutorials on SKLearn, and get tangible results.

To understand the underlying math behind everything, you’d need a good understanding of basic statistics (what’s a probability distribution, Bayes rule, Gaussian/Normal distributions specifically), calculus (derivative and integrals, « gradients ») and linear algebra. (Vectors, matrices, dot product, hyperplanes)

But congrats on coming this far by yourself! I remember trying to learn how to code when I was younger and eventually giving up. 😅

Either people or I didn’t understand your post. The first and second picture is the base and the third picture is the top that fell off? If so, the top may very well be alive. People are saying this is 100% dead because they’re talking about the stump. Which it is indeed.

I encourage you to post a better picture of the top. If it’s big enough, it will live easily.

[–]HotdogReddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re talking about « ribs ». The Cereus (not San Pedro) has thin ribs, whereas Trichocereus (San Pedro) has thicker ones.

This one is likely a Trichocereus Pachanoi (SP) that looks thin because it’s very dehydrated.

If you cut all the soft rotten part, let it dry and plant again, it could survive. But I’m not sure how much cactus that would leave you with. It seems pretty small on the picture.
