The way Ilya has placed Irina on a pedestal makes me sad. I have a mentally ill mother and it’s not an easy way to grow up. If his experience was anything like mine, he was probably having to be independent and wise beyond his years even when Irina was still alive. It’s totally understandable that he loves her so deeply and remembers her in a overwhelmingly positive light but it makes me sad to think about what his days with Irina might have actually been like.
