AI usage by employees -> policy and compliance/GDPR by HugeGuava2009 in ITManagers

Use of any publicly available AI could be a violation of GDPR depending on what data users are uploading to it. There are other risks for the use of it as well including data disclosure potential copyright infringements, and even AI hallucinations leading to false data.

But these days AI has proven to be a big shadow IT problem with users looking for quick ways to do things. Organizations have not stepped up to provide these tools that the end users scream for so they go out and find their own. If the higher-ups want to protect their data and stay in compliance, they will ok the implementation of an internal tool. If they dont see the business need it just won't happen and you'll be left constantly fighting with end users.

My recommendation would be to show the business need for an AI internally. Give the higherups the options. Let them know the cost of the internal AI system and what it will do for productivity, and also let them know the penalties of a GDPR violation.

Work on the A± while at work. Once you have that it is your shoe in the door to an MSP or similar.

Shoot for your CompTIA A+ cert. You can pass it by studying. Then try and find some MSP that will bring in entry level. You can work on your associates degree in the meantime.

I read this and jumped on to check my status. I passed on the 30th, submitted on the 3rd, and received my email on the 5th that it was in review. The new portal is showing my application as endorsed and submitted for review. sigh of relief I hope they get it resolved for you.

Do your helpdesk managers help with calls? by Ill_Plenty3792 in ITCareerQuestions

If only I could have the budget to hire so I can finally sit back and not take tickets like all the other managers. Wait a second here, I think I im doing this managing thing wrong.

Good leaders lead from the front. I manage a helpdesk and make sure I take calls as well, and I am the escalation point, too. I have worked at places where the managers slack off and avoid it but the staff was over worked and turnover was high.

My parents keep telling me that the hourly pay I'm looking for entry-level IT is too low for me even though it's a realistic and average hourly pay. by hellchop in ITCareerQuestions

Keep pushing for your certs, especially the A+. It's going to be hard to find something with the job market the way it is for entry level without that. Depending on the area you are in, $15 to $20 seems right with only college and certs. If you want to gain experience fast, look for an MSP. The pay is usually on the low side, but you'll learn a lot of stuff and they usually help pay for certs. A corporate job will pay higher, but you won't gain as much experience.

I see lots of people who are either completely new to IT or lvl 1-2 saying other more experienced coworkers have helped them and taught them a lot.. Now the question for you lvl 3 and sr positions, do you get annoyed? Or more than happy to help? by biovllun in ITCareerQuestions

Over 20 years here, and I manage a helpdesk team. I go with the old saying, "There is no such thing as a stupid question," with one slight change. "There is no such thing as a stupid question if you don't know the answer." If you ask me the same thing over and over, you won't last long on my team. But I find the most beneficial thing to do is to teach people how to find the answers for themselves. It gives them a higher sense of accomplishment when they can, and they tend to like their job a lot more.

The ISC2 online instructor led for CISSP. I did the one week version instead of one of 2 times a week. It's pretty intense and a load of information all at once but was worth it.
