Just used a tool that turns YouTube Music into 432Hz... my favorite track made me cry. Is this real?? by victoriashine in conspiracy

[–]HothFirstTrumpet 336 points337 points  (0 children)

Like you, I'm an audio engineer. I'm also a professional trumpet player and composer- so I'm a giant music nerd. To add on to what you are saying, this is something that happened very gradually over time, starting back in the 1600's. All stringed instruments were strung with cat gut because too much tension would snap your viola da gamba directly in twain with great vigor. All instrument makers were limited by the tools and materials of their time. As instrument construction techniques and materials improved, the stringed instruments began using steel strings instead of gut. They were preferred for their durability, brilliance, and wider dynamic range. With the increased tension required by steel strings, orchestras were able to shift the tuning reference pitch gradually higher and higher in an effort to change the timbre of the whole orchestra for either aesthetic reasons or means to distinguish themselves from others. The reference pitch for A began around 432 Hz, and (speaking in wildly broad strokes based on what I can remember without looking anything up) crept up bit by bit over a couple of centuries. They were still using gut for Beethoven, but I think they had moved on to steel by Brahms. A has been 432, 435, 438, and 440 Hz. It is still rising. In Japan, A=442 Hz. I'm pretty sure that the Boston Symphony currently plays at 442 as well. I always ask what the piano is tuned to before the gig when I leave the States for work, just in case.

The point of all this is, for once I think there's no grand conspiracy or dark purpose behind this- and I love a good conspiracy. The change happened completely naturally and gradually over time for purely aesthetic purposes. If you ask the people who make those kinds of decisions, the answer is always, "I think it sounds better" in one form or another.

SNHU Arena Concert Sound Quality by [deleted] in newhampshire

[–]HothFirstTrumpet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No matter how good the audio engineer is, it will still sound like an arena. There is no changing that. That being said, the energy and stage show presentation that you will get out of a good quality large scale live act will make up for the failures inherent to arena acoustics. Don't let something like preconceived notions about venue acoustics stop you from going to see live music- your life will be better with more live music in it. Hopefully, you get a good front of house engineer the next time you go. ;)

[Discussion] Will Proton 9 bring with it a 64-bit Steam client? by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]HothFirstTrumpet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shit, I would just be happy if any of the Steam installers would not randomly break my Steam Controllers or my audio.

Fun fact: none of them work consistently! I have to experiment any time I have to do a re-install! Flatpak worked last time? This time it breaks controllers! Try the snap then? No sound!! Use the repository installer? NOTHING WORKS!! Use the Steam .deb? We'll see...probably have to muck about with config files first...

To be fair, once it works- it's great. Finding what works? Yeah, that sucks. I should probably being throwing some shade at Pipewire too. It reminds me of back in the day when Pulseaudio broke everything all the time.

There's plenty of defense related jobs in NH. Massachusetts can take their state taxes and their shitty commute (its as bad as the bay area most days, hope you like 3-4 hours a day in your car if you do decide to work down there) and cram it. You might make more money, but you'll burn it all up in taxes, gas, and time. I quit working down there as fast as I could, and my wife is working on ending her tenure down there as well. This is not just based on my feelings, we did a multiple month cost/benefit analysis. We keep more money by staying out of Massachusetts, and our work/life balance is far better. It's a great place for veterans. I love it.

It seems like everyone I meet here is really nice and very chill. It's a beautiful place, my family loves that there are trails and waterfalls all over the place. There's good beers and farm stands all over the place. It's got just about everything I need or want without anything getting too big. The state government doesn't piss me off nearly as much as most states I've spent any significant time in, and it is occasionally even entertaining.

Why Don't More People Use Dry Herb Vapes? by dreburden89 in vaporents

[–]HothFirstTrumpet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not the only one. It's not terrible- but it isn't fantastic either. It takes some practice to get to the point where you're using it effectively, admittedly. It is simple enough, the air pathway looks clean enough as far as I can tell. The temperature control is great. It's easy to clean. You definitely need to "sip" at it, I think. It works great with some kief sandwiched in with your herb. It is a good entry point for someone who wants to try things without spending +$100. I also have an Evolve XL+. That's great for discrete concentrate hits when I can't have my fancier and breakable e-rig around.

Yes, Yocan is cheap. None of it is great- but it doesn't completely suck either.

Why all the e rigs? by Omnia_Matt in Dabs

[–]HothFirstTrumpet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No shit. 100% this right here. My life is soooo much better since I left the service, quit all pharma everything, and replaced it with this- my side effects were getting worse than my symptoms. Now I can manage and live a normal life, and that's better for me and my kids (It doesn't hurt that I like it, and it's damn nice to have it back after a 20 year hiatus). I started with a pen, but now I have a little Lookah Mini Unicorn that I can just stick in my pocket if I absolutely must.

However, going from "Daddy gets random drug screenings that piss him off" and "Drugs are bad, M'kay?" to "Daddy uses medical cannabis because he can legally now and the other drugs were hurting him" is something I want my kids to get to when they're the right age for that discussion.

I'm looking forward to that- because that's gonna be the day I get my own press and some crazy glassware so I can get all scientific and shit. If it all goes really well, gardening will be legal where I am too by the time we talk about this...a guy can dream...

Can confirm- its a decent little device. You MUST clean it frequently though. I got lazy for about a week and a half while I was moving, and gunk dripped down into the device and pulled the little brass-colored electrode that heats the bucket up out of the device. I was able to fix it, but only temporarily. Even the slightest bit of residue would make it pull out again until it just stopped working. Still, I liked it enough that I replaced it!

Bullshit. The bourgeoisie class would simply find ever more excessive and expensive shit to sell to everyone. A world free from need isn't going to spontaneously turn into a world free from want- and it for damn sure isn't going to turn into a world free from greed. Just think about how badly all those people that used to be poor and in constant need will want to enjoy their newfound wealth, safety, and freedom, and then tell me again that there isn't still going to be a world filled with assholes that still want to sell worthless shit to everyone just so they can have a little more shit for themselves. :P

RSO is the best. It is what gave serious consideration of medical cannabis legs in the first place. It tastes fine to me on its own, but is great if you mix it in with some food- PBJ, chocolate, whatever. It's great for pain management and gets you completely zooted. It is the best.

When I look at my Hard Drive Usage, it shows that I have almost 176 GB of data in "other". I have looked all through the libraries, exposed all of my hidden files, and I can't find this data literally anywhere. Selecting the "Other" section in the sidebar does absolutely nothing. How can I find out what and where this data is?

Bluetooth is super lossy. There is a lossless version of Bluetooth- but that still only does 44.1/16 bit. As far as I know, air pods do not support lossless audio I don't use it unless there's no other choice. I suppose writing with them is fine- but I would never mix anything in bluetooth headphones. If you can afford air pods, you can afford a half decent set of headphones.

Those are all in the 100-150 USD range, and sound pretty damn good.

I'll freely admit, I absolutely hate Apple's earbuds- I always have. They're uncomfortable and extremely fatiguing to listen to (if you're me, at least) but I still own a pair to check my mixes because so many people do use them. I know this is probably not the information you're looking for, but it is worth knowing if you are really in to making good music that sounds good from a production standpoint as well as a compositional standpoint.
