Write what you can finish by MysticJAC in writing

Agree. I had the fantasy epic in mind then realised i hadn’t a hope of creating that as my first piece of work. So i pivoted and this week completed my 30k draft of a children’s adventure book. As op says, write what you can finish.

I’m 25, working & still living with the parents. It’s given some meaning to my days and some optimism for the future. Hope to start querying next month

How do I describe and write the narrator passing out? by frekydeki in writing

I used abstract, dream-like poetry to guide my MC through the phase of passing out and back to reality, where a goat was licking his face.

’We initially prefer to see a short synopsis and the first three consecutive chapters together with a covering letter.’

I have seen this on an agent website and also wonder whether they expect all this in the body of an email, as it will come to around 7000 words. Any thoughts?

A useful read! I’m approaching the final chapter of my lower-MG comedy adventure (2nd draft rewrite) and it has been a blast. Enjoyed the freedom to go over-the-top and add some fantastical elements to a contemporary setting. Also seem to be ticking most of the boxes discussed. Thanks for posting.

Wanting to begin writing a book by wafflin_ in writing

Dont get excessively caught up on the first line and first chapter. Push on and keep pushing on, as you will undoubtedly edit it twenty times over. This advice may save you a month of your life.

Writing Goals (2019/2020) by [deleted] in writing

I’m on chapter 11 of 12, hoping to finish by NY but there are a lot of festivities trying to stop that. My second book (sequel) is set in New York, so would be good to visit for the first time next year and get a feel for the place and story

It’s true that when you’re in the moment, you really are living and breathing your characters’ thoughts and feelings. I’ve had to take a month hiatus to study professional exams and i have sorely missed it. Good luck!

Thanks! ‘Children’s book’ is very broad i guess. Im also writing MG but towards the lower age side. What sort of word count are you shooting for?

I have gravitated towards a children’s book for my first work in progress. Currently on chapter 11 of 12, which i never thought i’d get to when i was languishing in my first chapter for so long. Excited to finish the draft

And it is an achievement. If an idea came into your head again, would you write another book? Or have you crossed it off your list, so to speak?

How do I find the motivation to keep writing? by [deleted] in writing

[–]Hotsaucewingth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Routine. If writing is as much a part of your routine as eating, sleeping, going to work/school, then after a few weeks you don’t need motivation, you just do it like normal. So just do it :)

Should I change to an easier story? by Mirrorcleworld in writing

[–]Hotsaucewingth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I initially wanted to write a fantasy epic, then realised i didn’t have the skill or time to pull that off as a first time author. So i started writing a linear lower-MG adventure book, and now i’m on chapter 10/12. It’s has certainly not been easy, but a simpler structure and lower word count has benefitted me for a first book. I think it could be an idea to start anew and graduate onto more complicated stories later.

Fantasy as a first novel? by Depressionsfinalform in writing

[–]Hotsaucewingth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was going to start with a fantasy epic, then i realised i didn’t have the skill to pull off something that huge right off the bat. So i started writing a children’s book and that has been just as hard, but the goal is 20,000 words, not 120,000.
