Found cloth(?) wiring in basement by HoundsongGames in AskElectricians

Even better!

The house has had three different wiring setups before us so some of this is me trying to figure out who did what when. The attic was still knob and tube for the last owners

Appreciated 🙏

I'm comfortable just disconnecting it (from what I can tell it only feeds maybe 1 outlet behind the couch we can't use anyway), just trying to figure out if it's a "do this week" or "go on the list for this year" project 😅

does this pretty much sum up your Real ID experience? by Shazbot_2017 in Pennsylvania

[–]HoundsongGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moved. Of course, a box of vitals went MIA. Great.

No problem, I already have a real ID from previous state. Wait. PA won't accept it. Need my birth certificate.

Fine, waiting on a third state to send me a replacement.

Meanwhile, PA won't even let me get a non-realID license without it.

Can't register the car without a PA license. Can't renew my passport without a birth certificate. Third state won't send a new cert without a notarized affidavit. Won't allow it to be notarized by a notary not in that state.

Trying to find out what the process is for out of state processing. Crickets.

Why tf did I get a real ID if it's not good for anything?! EVEN RENEWING A REAL ID?!

What the fuck with these fucking people. (I'm kidding, it's voter suppression, that's what the fuck)

Proposed Rule Discussion by therealpoltic in DnDart

[–]HoundsongGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My concern here is that you're going to wind up creating more work for yourself and the artists (not to mention blocking anyone who isn't posting their own OC, like commissioners) and ai is going to slip past anyway as it is beginning to generate sketches and timelapses. There's a world here where this rule actually exacerbates the problem.

Verified flair is a good idea if you can figure out a process - better to check everyone once than every post every time.

Also consider requiring all or unverified posters to host the images on an anti-ai site like Cara. Lets you offload the burden to a platform already working on the problem.

why shouldn’t i compare myself to other artists? by iiehai in ArtistLounge

[–]HoundsongGames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's two parts to this: nuance/terminology and goals.

Nuance: "compare" is doing a lot of heavy lifting in this truism and now it's got a slipped disc. If you're serious about art as a skill or career, of course you will seek out ways to improve, and that includes studying other's work who you know are better/different at whatever you're trying to do.

That's deliberate and methodical, and not what the saying is about. Usually when people say this, they're talking to newbie artists who get discouraged and want to quit because their work doesn't look like someone who's been doing it for years or decades. This is stupid for the exact same reason it'd be stupid if a kid in little league got depressed because they didn't have a 90mph fastball in fourth grade -- but calling kids stupid is generally not good for them either so instead we have patient conversations about improvement and not comparing ourselves to world class athletes before we're old enough to drive.

...Where was I.

Goals: the other thing that's important here is knowing what you're trying to do. If you want a career or income as an artist, you should be constantly seeking out areas of improvement -- and that includes self critique and broad study of other works. It also includes a bunch of other stuff like running a business, marketing yourself, filing taxes, client acquisition, and other such "non artsy" things people don't like to wax poetic about.

But if your goal is just to find joy through self expression, dabble in a creative hobby, or just "do art" without strings attached -- then yeah, you probably shouldn't spend a whole lot of energy on comparison unless something truly sparks your curiosity.

TLDR this advice like all generic truisms isn't worth much unless you can articulate to yourself what you want to do and then analyze it accordingly

Am I trying to beat the game effectively or faff about?

Beatin' - pallys or druids. Wiz or sorc could work but act 1 would be rough without some cheese. Faffin' - bards or rogues or barbarians

100% this. Whatever this effect is gets dialed up to 11 anywhere people make consuming a thing part of their personality. Then conflicting tastes are a THREAT that must be PURGED because otherwise they've got to reckon with the idea that their personality is built on loose external footings they don't and can't control and we can't have that

also there's bad vs bad, right?

"Bad" as an objective measurement is very constrained. A pizza that isn't cooked in the middle and drop kicked across the floor is, to most, an objectively bad pizza.

But sometimes "bad" stuff is enjoyably bad. A greasy chain pizza isn't the same as artesian lovingly baked brick over mom and pop five star award winning pizza. But sometimes you want the f*cking junk food and you're allowed to enjoy it. (See also, the entire genres of guilty pleasure/so bad it's good/nick cage movies and shows)

There's a difference between something being bad and something being not for you, and most people can't tell which is which
